Why Black Magic will die. Part 1 out of 10. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8883/why-black-magic-will-die.-part-1-out-of-10. Tue, 26 Nov 2013 04:15:07 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 8883@/talks/discussions Development and production costs of modern cameras are huge. And they will become much worse.

image

Check image of E-M1 main board above. Usually biggest chips in modern cameras are as follows : main LSI chip, one or more RAM chips, flash chips.

In some cases, like in some modern Panasonic cameras it can be something that looks like one chip only - with main LSI located directly below custom chip that contains both flash and RAM.

Development of all of the chips mentioned is very complex and costly task. But they have one core difference - you can get modern mobile RAM (DDR2 or DDR3 usually) chips, same is true for flash. But if you are serious company you develop your own main LSI. Sometimes it is join efforts, for example Nikon use Fujitsu FR image LSI as core for further modifications. Join development allow to save costs, but usually means that any problem of the partner prevents adding important features (like Fujitsu FR issues with video until last generation).

Another core difference between this chips is the process that is used to manufacture them. RAM and Flash usually are at forefront of progress, as they are simpler chips and development costs are lower with better yields and ability to compensate increased costs with instantly visible increased capacity.

For LSI is much more difficult. Latest Fujitsu based LSI (like in Nikon) are still 65nm, as far as I know many other LSI are also in same or slightly smaller process. This is in the times were most mobile CPUs went 28nm. Why it is so?

Answer here is simple - development costs and ability to return investments. You can check table below:

image

Further it become even worse:

image

Companies try to overcome this with existing process optimizations like SuVolta ones.

the MB86S22AA Milbeaut image processing chip — the DDC tech can cut power consumption by 30 percent, but it can still have twice the processing performance of comparable chips. Fujitsu and SuVolta have been working together since the Summer of 2011.

In case of new process costs rise even more due to problems associated with initial stages of production.

Charts from http://m.eet.com/media/1160433/sv_mw_b_120601_technology%20extension%20oped_revm.pdf

How big are this costs?
Non-recurring engineering costs estimates for 28nm complex image LSI are about $29 millions of dollars.

In case of more iterations of development, producing more masks and modifications costs can be as high as $50 millions.

All this money must be returned from chip sales inside cameras. Millions of cameras.

Small companies usually have no chance to do it, so they use other solution - modern FPGA chips. We'll discuss in detail their specifics and development costs in next post.

So, as you see sharply declining sales of compact cameras do not start smile happily looking at your smartphone. Most of this cameras use same LSI as in big cameras, sometimes clocked down and with smaller amount of slower memory, but same chips. As otherwise it becomes impossible to be profitable.

Today all camera companies face complex problems:

  • Necessity to move to 28nm (who did not do it already) and later to 14nm.
  • Sharply rising development costs
  • Declining overall cameras sales resulting in constant cuts and optimizations that have almost no effect.
  • Steady or declining average camera prices (all companies went with idea to introduce premium cameras and design to rise the price)

In upcoming posts we'll touch FPGA development problems, 14nm costs comparisons, flash and ram issues, screens problems

Ninja Warrior or Climbing? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16102/ninja-warrior-or-climbing Fri, 25 Nov 2016 07:16:39 +0000 mpgxsvcd 16102@/talks/discussions Some people might remember the climbing videos I posted in the past. I haven't done one of those in a long time. The kids are all still just as into climbing but I just didn't have the time anymore to put into making the videos.

However, one of the parents of a climber decided to build a pretty spectacular American Ninja Warrior course in his backyard. Here is what opening day looked like.

This was filmed with the GoPro Hero5 Black and the Panasonic LX100. Most of it is UHD/4K @ 30 FPS or 2.7k @ 60 FPS. However, some clips were 1080p @ 120 FPS converted to UHD/4K @ 60 FPS. There is one 720p @ 240 FPS clip for the super slow motion. The compression artifacts are terrible but 240 FPS is really cool for slow motion.

If you have any questions about the GoPro 5 please let me know. I know it doesn't look that much better than the Hero4. However, it still is a fabulous camera for what it is designed to do and its price is actually quite reasonable.

There is no color grading done at all. This is footage straight out of the camera pieced together and sometimes slowed down or sped up. No other changes except for just a little general sharpening throughout the video. This is the first 4K @ 60 FPS video I have done for youtube. I don't have the ability to make HDR videos yet. However, I am really impressed with the true HDR videos youtube now has.

Web streaming + HDMI recording 2-3GHx's http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6391/web-streaming-hdmi-recording-2-3ghxs Wed, 13 Mar 2013 13:56:30 +0000 andrevanberlo 6391@/talks/discussions As there are quite a few videographers around here that use much of the same equipment i do I thought this forum is the best place to post my question.

I want to use the HDMI of my 2 GH3’s for webstreaming using some software like wirecast but also for recording instructional videos on my Mac.

Now I’ve been looking at solutions from AJA, Matrox, and Blackmagic but I’m unsure which one actually does what i need it to do.

This is the short list of features that I’m looking for: 2 hdmi inputs that can be streamed simultaneously to the web Able to record the HDMI of both cams to an SSD the device or card would help out with any rendering done by FCPX , Pr, AE, etc...

Extra’s: I have also one GH2, I’ve read that the HDMI of the GH2 is useless for recording but maybe it can be used for streaming? The possibility of adding the GH2 to the setup and thus having 3 cams would be a welcome bonus but not necessary.

I have an RME fireface 800 that i'll be using for audio capture.

What would you all see as the best way to go about doing this?

Simple question actually, the title says it all : which would be the best hack - or is it even necessary - for black&white on gh2? The black&white I have in mind as an ideal (I must repeat this : as an ideal!) is the film noir style, films like "The killers", "Criss Cross", directed by Siodmak...

Any thoughts and/or knowledge would be highly appreciated.

BMD Ultrastudio mini recorder(thunderbolt) + GH3 + Wirecast for streaming http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8577/bmd-ultrastudio-mini-recorderthunderbolt-gh3-wirecast-for-streaming Mon, 28 Oct 2013 01:13:41 +0000 andrevanberlo 8577@/talks/discussions Hey everyone,

To do some live streaming I’ve looked at many solutions and this one seems (at this point) the most ideal for my multi camera setup : hook up 3 gh3’s to 3 Ultrastudio mini recorders with thunderbolt and use wirecast to do the streaming and encoding on the mac pro/hackintosh.

I’ve seen however some conflicting messages on forums where it seems that the GH3 signal will not pass through the mini recorder, so does any one have experience with this? Can anyone confirm the mini recorder works with the GH3 and wirecast?

I believe the GH3 has 4:2:0 out and the codecs supported by the mini recorder are:   AVC-Intra, AVCHD, Canon XF MPEG2, Digital SLR, DV-NTSC, DV-PAL, DVCPRO50, DVCPROHD, DPX, HDV, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, XDCAM HD422, Apple ProRes 4444, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes (LT), Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy), Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.

So perhaps the GH3 might not work due to different colorspace?

Here a post where you see a setup using to minirecorders thunderbolt + usb camera to stream live with wirecast: htttp://forum.telestream.net/forum/messageview.aspx?catid=45&threadid=13444 The guy doesn't use a dslr but dedicated camera but you can use the mini recorders with wirecast, only question is, will it work with the GH3?!

Hope one of you can shed some light on this matter

Got the chance to take my 10 year old son there for Christmas. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Filmed with my Panasonic GH3, GoPro 3 Black, and Modified Full Spectrum GF1 simultaneously. I shot with the GoPro on the GH3's hot shoe so I would have simultaneous wide angle and tight views. The GF1 was on a tripod and was put in Black and White mode with contrast turned all the way up because of the extra UV/IR light that is let in. It can literally see in the dark.

No color grading was done at all. I simply don't have time for it. This is straight out of the camera video just pieced together with the music.

I think the future of filming is multiple cameras operated by a single person. Maybe just a pipe dream but it is still my dream.

Black Magic: Shooting and gear http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4659/black-magic-shooting-and-gear Fri, 21 Sep 2012 09:59:36 +0000 ahbleza 4659@/talks/discussions As one of the many here who have ordered the Black Magic, I'd like to start a thread about the recommended techniques and equipment for getting the best out of the Cinema Camera. First, obviously is the glass. I've ordered a MFT mount version, which means waiting for next year before I can get my hands on one.

I want to know if anyone here is currently shooting with the original version, and what additional equipment you feel is needed to handle shooting. My rough list is the following:

o Baseplate (I'm using Zacuto with FF) on Sachtler sticks

o EVF -- I'm using the Zacuto also, for zebras and flexible positioning

o 2 x SSD drives... I'm waiting to order these until last minute so prices come down

o Matte box? Is this essential? I think not, for my documentary style shooting

Will my two-year old MBP be enough to edit ProRes422 encoded 10 bit video? How should I connect the SSD drives? I think for my initial shooting, Raw might be too much for my workflow process.

Black borders for cinema screening http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7208/black-borders-for-cinema-screening Mon, 10 Jun 2013 10:34:30 +0000 AlbertZ 7208@/talks/discussions Hi, I've been selected by a film festival which needs a standard MPEG H.264 1286 x 720 HD (16:9 ratio) file for screening... however, my short film(shooted with the old sweet GH1) has a 4:3 ratio. In order to avoid any problem of stretching, compatibility etc, I am going to add BLACK BORDERS on both left and right side of my 4:3 video, so that I will have a 1286 x 720 HD with black borders...it will be ok for the cinema screening in your opinion?
