Control your GH3 from a Web Browser - Now with video !

v0.4 is out. a Java player has been added for live view ! most commands are there

To test this :

download the attached zip file (last version is v0.4) , and decompress it wherever you want
for the live view to work, you need :
- Java RE : download here : http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
- Add the java bin directory to your PATH, see here : http://www.java.com/en/download/help/path.xml. On a windows machine, the Java bin directory should be : C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin
start the Wifi on your GH3, "new connection/remote shooting" (it works also if you connect through a Wifi AP, you just need to find the IP address of the GH3)
- if you're using a direct connection you can launch the "Control.html" file after you connected your PC/MAC to the GH3 network
- if you're using a Wifi access point, you have to find/replace all the "192.168.0.1" in the "requests.html" file with the IP address of the GH3 before launching the "Control.html" file
if you want to use the live view on a Windows PC launch control.bat instead of control.html (see above for Java installation). If you're using a MAC, you have to find a way to launch UDPServer with Java, I don't know if it works
play with the different settings and commands
To take a picture, use the shooting button (you can do continuous shooting with press&hold if the dial is in that mode)
To start a recording press "record"
manual focusing uses press&hold buttons with 2 speeds, you can play with the interval between 2 successive focusing actions with the input fields on top of the 4 focus buttons.
The zoom uses press&hold buttons, with 2 speeds (for PZ lenses of course)

Some commands will not work depending on the selected mode on the dial (ie focal in S mode)

The screen goes black quite often, just take a picture or half press the shutter button to turn it on again. But now that live view works (on Windows at least), you shouldn't have to look at the GH3 LCD anymore.

If the GH3 freeze, you may have to take the battery out (may happend if you use a feature non supported by the selected mode on the dials)

To properly interrupt the connection, just "terminate" it on the GH3 menu

You can stop the video recording using "playmode" (which is the command to display the photo on Lumix Link).I didn't look at the files generated when you do that, if someone could look at the integrity of the video file after this abrupt stop, it would be useful. You have to press "recmode" to control the gh3 again.

Clarification :

This is a PoC. I'm not a developer, and won't spend much time on future version. someone with some basic web dev skills will be able to do a much better job in no time; He just has to look at the code, and eventually ask me.

Panasonic Image App: Use with Laptops and Tablets

I was thinking of sinking some cash into a laptop, and it occurred to me that I ought to take location shooting into consideration. So I've been looking at Android laptops and two-in-ones: I figure, I could use the two-in-one tablet as a field monitor using the Panasonic app with my GH4-- I figure I'd use the camera's screen as cameraperson, while the director can watch remotely on the laptop/tablet. And the laptop features could be used for file storage and clip logging.

And I'm also considering getting a Windows two-in-one-- that is, if the Panasonic app works under the Android emulators available for Windows. The benefits there are having two OSes, more options for things like hard drives, and maybe even getting a machine capable of running Premiere Pro for some editing in the field.

So, I'm looking for advice. Does the Panasonic app work under an Android emulator well enough for field use? Has anyone else used equipment in this manner? (And is Panasonic considering creating a version of its app to run under Windows?)

Eylca : control FZ1000 (and other Lumix cameras) from an android app

I made an android app which allows to control a lumix camera remotely. It is based on the amazing work of @lenuisible It aims at extending the possibilities of what your camera can do. At this point, it allows some really really basic control, and motion detection.

It is still at an early development stage, and I can only test it on the FZ1000.

HACKING AND/OR INSTALLING

The app is free and opensource.

USING THE APP

Please disable burst mode on your camera. It is not handled yet. Start the wifi on your camera, connect your phone to the wifi of the camera, and launch the app.

Basic control

The app allows to see what the camera sees, and to control the camera manually to some extend. Right now, we can only take pictures, videos, zoom in and out and focus in and out. The controls for zooming and focusing don't support long click yet, but it will get better soon.

Motion detection

The main purpose of the app is to do things that you can't do with only your camera, or with Panasonic app.

At this point, the main feature is to shoot or record a video when a motion is detected in what the camera sees. You can control this detection with 2 parameters: a threshold, and a parameter to tell the size of the object which may appear in the camera stream. These 2 parameters can be changed on the fly. I recommend that you start motion detection in "do nothing" mode, when you want to set the parameters without taking multiple useless photos. Please note that motion detection has to be restarted if you change between "do nothing", "continuously shoot" or "record video".

TROUBLESHOOTING

If you don't see what the camera sees in basic control mode, check the camera ip in the settings of the app, and change it if necessary. You may also need to disable mobile data.

FUTURE

In the futur, I'd like to add focus bracketing, and scripting. If you have any idea which could extend the camera's features using remote control, please don't hesitate to share ! Also don't hesitate to give feedback.

Panasonic Image App phoning home

Today I test-installed the Panasonic image app for Android, closed the firewall for the device and had a look at the network traffic whether and if so whereto it "phones home".

Without being configured/instructed by the user to do anything on the network, the app (right after pressing the "cancel" button on the initial camera connect screen - didn't want to connect to the camera at this time) places HTTP POST requests with "lumixclub.picmate.jp". At least if that URL is unreachable, the app will also try to contact "panasonic.net" via HTTP.

Obviously, I won't let my firewall allow this unsolicited "phoning home". I'm not a member of any "Lumix club", I don't intend to become one, and I do not want to share any information about my camera or my images with anyone at Panasonic.

It's a plague how electronics manufacturers today abuse your InterNet connection as they like without asking for permission and without having any reason to do so.

Nexus 7 to view clips

I wanted to know if anyone has experience using a Nexus 7 (2013 version) to view clips from a hacked gh2. I don't know which hack, I just know it is over 100mbps. I'm wondering if I would be able to use it to playback clips when I'm on the go before I get to my desk to edit. My idea was to use a card reader. Also, I have a 64gb thumb drive, so would it be possible to move clips onto the thumb drive from a memory card using just the tablet (and a few cables)? I am very close to pulling the trigger on buying one, and this will be the deciding factor, so any help is appreciated.

off course I had to check it out. this is simply that: a quick and dirty first approach test

from vimeo description: carrying on my TL experiments - see previous - I fitted my shitty android phone (running cyanogenmod 7) in the window and took 301 pics with camera FV-5. processed them in lightroom and exported to panolapse, which is as simple as an application gets. still tweaked the yaw, roll and zoom and exported as a deflickered quicktime movie. added an spiced John Cage's Dream loop and some hisss. voilà!

Is there any way to play GH2 .MTS files on any android player? I would like to buy one tablet where I could check files on the field. I know it would be a hardware problem to play the files, but the main thing is just to see the image quality. It doesn't need to play smooth.
