Premiere Pro and Speedgrade October 2013 Update http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8056/premiere-pro-and-speedgrade-october-2013-update Mon, 09 Sep 2013 14:35:16 +0000 Philldaagony 8056@/talks/discussions I know @shian and everyone else here serious about color work will love this. I may be a Resolve man, but I'll be damned if Adobe isn't vying for my heart with this update. Jumping back and forth between Premiere and Speedgrade seamlessly is a fast-paced production dream.

http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2013/09/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-october-2013-release.html

There is a ton going on with this update, but this paragraph is what has me smiling.

"Color is becoming increasingly important throughout an entire production workflow, and the addition of the Lumetri Deep Color Engine in the June 2013 Premiere Pro CC release gave editors the ability to work with beautiful SpeedGrade grades right inside the application. With this release, SpeedGrade has fully implemented the Mercury Playback Engine from Premiere Pro, and a brand new workflow between the two applications is being introduced, namely Direct Link. With Direct Link, editors can save a project in Premiere Pro and then open the sequence they were working on directly in SpeedGrade, with no need to deal with interchange formats or any kind of conversion. SpeedGrade then opens the sequence in a familiar timeline that more closely matches how you work in Premiere Pro. You can access all the clip edit points, transitions, and layers, using the same track layout as Premiere Pro. From there, create your grades, and then reopen the same project in Premiere Pro with all your color work fully intact. This workflow uses no interchange formats and no importing or exporting – it’s just the same Premiere Pro project moving between the two applications."

A quick demo of the capabilities apparently. I guess this whole CC thing has some merit update wise.

Developing a new Transition Plug-In for Premiere Pro - help needed http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7905/developing-a-new-transition-plug-in-for-premiere-pro-help-needed Mon, 26 Aug 2013 09:50:55 +0000 editor 7905@/talks/discussions We are a small video production company and working with adobe premiere pro since version 1.0. We are quite happy with the actual CC-Version but from our point of view are some important transitions missing. We wrote several times to Adobe and filled out their "future feature request" on the adobe-homepage, but unfortunately none of the functions, that we wanted were implementet. That's why we developed over a year a go our own PlugIn, we call "Transition Designer".

For the actual CC-Version we want to do a major update which is really expensive, depending on the new features we want to have implemented. We are only designing the PlugIn and defining the features, but we have a company to do the programming for us (in c++ with the adobe premiere sdk). Before we start reinvesting and because we want to be real close to the market, we would like to hear which features YOU would like to have implemented and if you think, that this tool would be useful for you or not. We did not make the decision if we will sell it or not by now.

At the moment the PlugIn has the following features:

  • You can do push-, wipe- and dissolve-transitions and all of them are fully keyframable, which means that if you have a dolly track you can push the next video with the speed of the dolly into the frame

  • You can completely customize your transition by taking a Photoshop-Layer with Alpha-Channel an make this PSD-Layer the basis for the transition. For example: you can start your wipe-transition in the upper left corner and make it go down to the right corner with a soft border, the feather of the border is also customizable. This effect is used very often in TV-Shows for example in "White Collar Season 2", when they change from outside into the police headquarter.

  • The transition can have any angle that you want

  • You can start the dissolve transition from any position that you want

  • You can "dip" to a logo which can be useful if you use the Logo of a fair/exhibition/trade show and you can use the logo as a kind of "separator" between different companys at the exhibition.

I know that you can do all of this with after effects, but it really saves a lot of time if you can do those things directly in PremierePro.

We are planning to add some other new features, but for me it would be interesting to hear, if such a PlugIn would be useful for your every day work and which features you would like to have included into a transition PlugIn. What you see on the pictures is NOT the real PlugIn, it is the functionality that we gave to the company to do the programming for us. The User Interface will look different. Please let me now your thoughts.

As I attempt to bring in footage to Premier Pro CS6 the playback is hicuppy at best, starting with the audio cutting out. Would anyone have any workable preference for this situation. The media files all natively save to a private folder in which I transferred to my HDD. From there I took the footage into Premier. I began with opening the files, then after the hiccups, I decided to import, still same problems occur. Also using Dynamic Link, do you have to import all used media files to each different program?

AMD and Adobe Collaborate on Upcoming Version of Adobe Premiere Pro Software to Enable Breakthrough Video Editing Performance through Open Standards

AMD A-Series APU, Radeon and FirePro graphics technology work seamlessly with next version of Adobe Premiere Pro software to provide real-time editing, effects, compositing and colour grading

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Apr. 5, 2013 – AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced its collaboration with Adobe Systems Incorporated to deliver OpenCL™ hardware-accelerated video editing for the first time on the Microsoft Windows platform with the next version of Adobe® Premiere® Pro. This collaboration further demonstrates AMD's commitment to enabling partner ecosystems with cross-platform open standards, empowering Adobe to amplify the editing experience for creative professionals everywhere. The combination of expanded support for open standards and the Adobe Creative Cloud™ brings unmatched access to the most up-to-date and powerful professional post-production tools anywhere.

The next version of Adobe Premiere Pro has been optimized to take full advantage of a wider range of AMD professional- and consumer-class graphics processing units (GPUs) and accelerated processing units (APUs), delivering unprecedented real-time editing with formats from DV to HD and 4K Ultra HD at high frame rates. Now Adobe and AMD extend this advanced OpenCL functionality to creative professionals running the Windows operating system. The expanded support on Windows and OSX complements the already popular Mac OSX OpenCL support available on Adobe Premiere Pro.

"AMD and Adobe are dedicated to delivering professional- and consumer-level solutions that support open standards and provide artists everywhere with the ability to create at the speed of thought," said Neal Robison, senior director, Software Alliances at AMD. "Through AMD's strong relationship with Adobe, video editors no longer have to wait for the rendering of edits, effects and composites ─ most everything can now be achieved at high-quality in real-time."

Coupling AMD graphics hardware with the latest Adobe software, video professionals and prosumers alike will benefit from seamless, high-quality feedback. The next version of Adobe Premiere Pro with support for OpenCL harnesses the power of discrete AMD graphics cards and AMD A-Series APU's to enable real-time edits, application of dozens of effects, support for the new Lumetri deep-colour engine, and multi-stream and mixed format accelerated workflows with AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology.

From its APUs and notebook graphics cards to professional workstation cards like the AMD FirePro™ W-series, AMD technology works transparently with Adobe Premiere Pro to provide scalable GPU-accelerated editing solutions for inspired prosumers and creative professionals everywhere. The software is accelerated by OpenCL to efficiently harness the compute power of AMD APU and graphics products and achieve up to 4.3X faster exports from a source format with effects to a preferred final destination format for quick and easy distribution and publishing[1].

"We're all about creating the best software possible, and at NAB we're revealing some incredible enhancements to our video editing tools," said Simon Williams, director of strategic relations at Adobe. "Our customers require powerful systems that enable them to work quickly and efficiently. Settings for Rendering for Best quality in Adobe Premiere Pro 6.0 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5759/settings-for-rendering-for-best-quality-in-adobe-premiere-pro-6.0 Sat, 12 Jan 2013 21:29:28 +0000 kronstadt 5759@/talks/discussions In preparation to shoot a few short films and, ultimately, a feature length film (with hopes to send it to festivals and cinemas) I have recently built a very powerful computer (i7-3930K, Sabertooth x79, 32GB RAM, 250GB SSD, MSI GTX480 vcard) with Win 7 and Adobe Creative Suite 6.0, including Premiere Pro. So, the rendering is really fast. For example, the 90 seconds clip that would take me 30min to render on an old laptop now renders in just 2 minutes.

I cannot recall what the rendering settings on my old laptop's PPro CS4 were. So I have to ask the community here: What rendering settings would you recommend for best video output quality? with minimal or no loss of original quality.
* Format:

  • Preset:

  • Frame Rate:

  • Aspect:

  • TV Standard:

  • Profile:

  • Level:

  • Render at maximum depth: ?

  • Bitrate encoding:

  • Target Bitrate

  • Maximum Bitrate

  • Key frame distance

  • etc

  • etc

Videos will be used for BlueRay disks to be sent to festivals and cinemas, as well as for demonstrations on Vimeo as well as on my own 1920x1200 computer screen.

Many thanks in advance!

PS: I have a GH13 and I live in the UK (so I'm not sure if PAL or NTSC matter when it comes to displaying your work on a cinema screen).
PSS: I'm sorry if this question may seem as coming from a novice. I'm more of a writer/director rather than cinematographer/editor/director, although always learning new things.

8bit color nonsense http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5439/8bit-color-nonsense Mon, 10 Dec 2012 12:40:59 +0000 shian 5439@/talks/discussions Per the discussion that started in the GH3 thread: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/101069#Comment_101069

Where it was stated that shooting flat in 8bit was a terrible idea, and the nonsense we've heard over and over that you can't bring that color back, which everyone who has seen my work knows is just not true.

While it is true you cannot magically turn 8 bit color into 32bit color. Working in a 32bit environment does allow your corrections to enhance your footage rather than deteriorate your footage.

@FilmingArt FCP X, Premiere Pro CS6, Vegas Pro 12, Smoke 2013, are all 32bit

Just go to my vimeo channel to see tons of video's shot using this method on 8bit cameras https://vimeo.com/channels/shianstorm

And then check these threads for why you are catastrophically wrong about "noise and all kinds of other problems." And welcome to the discussion.

Opinions from switchers of CS5.5 to CS6? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5177/opinions-from-switchers-of-cs5.5-to-cs6 Mon, 12 Nov 2012 14:50:42 +0000 qwerty123 5177@/talks/discussions I'm guessing quite a few folks have experience here with CS5.5 and CS6.

I recently found someone to sell me the entire CS5.5 master collection for just under $100 (they are legitimate and it's not pirated). But.... I'm also a student and can get the CS6 production premium for around $450 (or so). The upgrade costs to CS5.5 to CS6 seem like they are almost as much as the CS6 student pricing.. so... I'm wondering if the new features (esecially in premiere cs6) are worth the extra money???

What is your personal view about cs6 vs cs5.5? :-)

My pc specs: (general stuff) Amd phenom II 920 - 2.8 GHz 4 core 4870 radeon 8 GB ram DDR2

What should I do? Should I shoot in 720p from now on? Should I use a diffrent workflow (now I just threw .H264 video in adobe premiere)? Is there a way I could encode videos to a diffrent codec before I edit (I know I will be loosing quality...). Are there any other tricks and tips in post, if so let me know please :)

However, I'm kinda lost when it comes to color grading. Here's what I shot the other day to kill time:

Not terrible. I always try to shoot it as close to how I want it to look in Premiere. But, this time around, I experimented with some color grading. I can get into the details if need be. But, really, I'm just looking for opinions. Does this look bad? What would you change? Etc.

The Final Dance - Touches of Color (2012) - GH2 short film http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3788/the-final-dance-touches-of-color-2012-gh2-short-film Thu, 05 Jul 2012 07:54:32 +0000 davidhjlindberg 3788@/talks/discussions Hi people,

I wanted to share this film with you to get some real critics from you. I'm active on a Swedish forum already and usually put my films over there to get some feedback but I wanted to hear your opinions as well.

The film is a school project I had, and I wanted to make a short film where I could really show my color grading. So even though I directed, edited and made the vfx in this video, I did it almost only to show my grading skills to then have something to show post companies as a portfolio after my graduation, which was a few weeks ago.

What do you think is good, what can I've been doing better?

I was using GH2, Orion v4b, Nostalgic (-2-2-2-2). Lens was Samyang 35mm 1.4.

Software used was After Effects CS5.5, Premiere Pro CS5.5, Twixtor, DaVinci Resolve. Converted all my files to Cineform .MOV before editing.

Adobe Cloud Subscription http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3051/adobe-cloud-subscription Sun, 29 Apr 2012 18:09:23 +0000 pvjames 3051@/talks/discussions Wasn't sure to add this on the CS6 topic but i wanted to ask your opinions on the new paradigm Adobe will have everyone subscribing to with their Cloud Service. Of what i see, there are pros/cons. It depends on your situation and how deeply you use the Suite. This is something Adobe will eventually have ALL join but right now you have the option to either own CS6 or subscribe. May not be the case for CS6.5 or CS7. What do you think?

edit: extra info- If you subscribe using the Creative Cloud Membership option, the computer needs to connect to the Internet once per month to check its license. If you don't have a connection when it tries to check, the software won't stop working for quite a long time; it just needs a connection once per month.

If you instead use the perpetual license option (i.e., the usual, "old" way), not Creative Cloud Membership, then the computer never needs to be connected to the Internet; you just have to enter an activation code that you can get using any Internet-connected device (like your smartphone or another computer).

There's a Creative Cloud FAQ list here: http://www.adobe.com/products/creativecloud/faq.html

File-transfer Workflow with Gh13: do I need PhotoFun software at all? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1430/file-transfer-workflow-with-gh13-do-i-need-photofun-software-at-all Sat, 12 Nov 2011 08:16:20 +0000 kronstadt 1430@/talks/discussions I want to ask you about your file-transfer and editing workflow.

When I bought the body of GH1, it came with this REALLY-REALLY annoying software called "PhotoFunStudio". It occupies 364mb on my computer (which doesn't have much breathing space) and frankly, I still don't understand what is it for??? Is there any particular purpose why I might need it, like "correct" file transfer or the "correct" deletion of video and photo files??? Do I need it at all??? Or shall I just uninstall it?

I noticed that when i shoot in AVCHD, my .MTS files are not time-coded. Do I need "PhotoFunStudio" to time-code them?

Here is my workflow. If you see any mistakes or have any suggestions, please tell me.
Sometimes I use my GH13 for taking photos, but primarily for making movies. I use GH13 with Blackout-Powell patch, a 5 year old Dell Latitude D820 laptop with 80GB hard-drive and 3.25GB of RAM, 3TB external HDD, Win XP SP3, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. At the end of the day, I take out the SD card and put it into a USB-card-reader and put it into my laptop. Then I navigate to PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM , select all .MTS files and move them to my external HDD for editing later in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Then, I safely remove the SD card, put it back into GH13 and delete all files (sometimes I format the whole card). When I edit with Premiere Pro CS4, I just drag-n-drop the .MTS files (without timecoding) from my external HDD into the bin and edit away.

Any ideas, suggestions, reflections, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!]]>

4. VERY IMPORTANT... select clip in AMB cs5 and go to FILE, INTERPRET FOOTAGE,
5. select "Use Frame Rate from file 30.0000 (30p) Pixel Aspect stays the same
6. Field Order select "Conform to: Upper Field First" IMPORTANT
7. CLICK OK
8. now ur footage is interpreted as 30 interlaced, click on SETTINGS
9. AND render to preferred format to 23.98, I used Apple Pro Res HQ and my footage looks good.

can some of you confirm if this actually works? I know transcoding is an extra step, but doing it like this is pretty simple, specially if your on a mac like me and dont wanna go the PC route to transcode and fix the crippled HDMI footage.

Cant wait for you guys to try this out.

On a second note, I'm working on a cage specifically for the GH2, with lots of mounting options, good access to battery, hdmi, and audio input, I'll keep you guys posted as soon as I get it milled.
