SanDisk Extreme SDHC Cards

  • Are the two preferred SD cards from the FAQ still the following?

SanDisk Extreme Pro SDHC 95 MB/s, 32 GB
SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC 95 MB/s, 64 GB

I'm still using the GH2, and finally want to get into hacking it. I just wanted to make sure that now that it is the end of 2014, there aren't any newer SD cards that would work better. Does the SDXC version still have the issues with the "file number limit exceeded" error? Hearing about that, I'm leaning towards the SDHC version, but 64GB would be nice.

  • Has anyone tested the new Sandisk Extreme Pro 280MB/s cards in a GH2 to see how they fare?

  • hi unfortunatly my gh2 does not detect my sdhc card after eraseing ALL files (also erased files windows said could be vital for function of card think one was cache or something).i formated card afterwards with pc.it works in pc but gh2 says no card inserted.anyone got an idea how to fix it.unsed sd formatter but same thing. card is a 32 gig scandisk extreme hd video 30mbs.

  • @Riker

Try to use different software. Otherwise defective SD cards are very common thing.

  • I tested 5 of my Sd cards, bought throughout last 2 years...all of them tested "The media is likely to be defective" and couple of KB in data lost. Whats the deal here?

  • Question:

Tried the H2testw on this card.

///////// First time, after quick format with windows explorer: The media is likely to be defective. 29.7 GByte OK (62308335 sectors) 8.5 KByte DATA LOST (17 sectors) Details:0 KByte overwritten (0 sectors) 3.5 KByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 7 sectors) 5 KByte corrupted (10 sectors) 0 KByte aliased memory (0 sectors) First error at offset: 0x000000006eb2d600 Expected: 0x000000006eb2d600 Found: 0x000000006eb2a559 H2testw version 1.3 Writing speed: 16.9 MByte/s Reading speed: 18.5 MByte/s

///////// Second time, after quick format with sdformatter: The media is likely to be defective. 29.7 GByte OK (62308345 sectors) 3.5 KByte DATA LOST (7 sectors) Details:0 KByte overwritten (0 sectors) 1.5 KByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 3 sectors) 2 KByte corrupted (4 sectors) 0 KByte aliased memory (0 sectors) First error at offset: 0x0000000006b06a00 Expected: 0x0000000006b06a00 Found: 0x0000000006b002a5 H2testw version 1.3 Writing speed: 16.9 MByte/s Reading speed: 18.5 MByte/s H2testw v1.4

    Defective....what the hell...?

  • Are realiable the Extreme/Extreme Plus @ 80mb/s for GH2 hack?

  • Got home now...

SH @ 125 fps all the time, ETC all the time with 20mm pancake...walked thru the woods, shot trees, streams, shrubs, even rocked some shrubs to make up for lacking wind...

Ran it for 1 hours straight, got home, no errors...I guess this card works fine. But I'll do another long test to make sure.

EDIT - just tried shooting 24H, shutter at 40, ISO 6400, pointed at the monitor with some illusion patterns looping from YouTube, those hyno-wheels, infinite tunnels and similar stuff...the card doesn't span, stops recording after 13 minutes.

Old Transcend 32 GB Class 10 card doesn't span either.

    WTF??

Edit 2 : 24L mode spans fine. I guess I'll need to switch to 24L when I'll need long takes.

Just out of curiosity - if none of my cards aren't able to span with this 42mbps hack, should I also be worried about card read error in the middle of the recording?

  • While we wait, I'll take my batteries out, SDFormatter is ending the full format right now, so I'll take the card and just walk around with SH mode on, 125 shutter...

My subjective impression is that the burst mode is way quicker now. My old cards were SanDisk Ultra SDHC 30 MBs and Transcend 32 GB SDHC, don't know the speed, doesn't say...blue card with rainbow above the logo :) None of them crashed with the NAA hack at 42mbps.

Hope the new card doesn't crash. I don't want to go back to stock FW :)

  • @Riker Maybe panning, and continues motion shots (like steadicam walking through house), might require more work by processor and SD card.

Any experienced hack setting and SD card testers out there to chime in on what's best crash proof testing?

  • Just got my SanDisk Extreme 45 MBs SDHC UHS1 card...I got the No Adverse Affects Hack 42 mbps hack on my GH2 and I tried it for 10 minutes in ETC mode, with shutter speed varying from 40 to 125, wobbled the camera all the time, of course mandatory shrub/trees...no issues...should I try something else, how do I crash test this card? Knowing that GH2 doesn't mess with UHS...

One fellow says he can't shoot video with this card, only photos, but he has the GH3...

  • Talked to Sandisk support. It is indeed the same card. So, that means you can use ULTRA 32gb 30mbs class 10 perfectly on GH2, I tried it and it spans no problem. Very cheap card.

  • I think I bought the wrong sandisk cards: I bought a few Sandisk 32gb 30mbs for really cheap on amazon. When I got them, I recognized, they where the ULTRA ones, not the EXTREME. And I remember the Ultra were not working fine. But I always had the 30mps Extreme and they where great. As the 30mbs extreme are now out of the market and substituted by the 45mbs does anybody know, if they threw them back on the market as named ULTRA, with the same class 10 and 32gb and 30mbs and everything, because they look also exactly the same with the red sticker, so I could use these Ultras (dont want to open the package but may be give them back)?

  • @Striker6662003 That should work fine. I use Drewnet T9 with a 64 GB Patriot LX card (write speed is only about 13 MB/s) I'm not sure about spanning though as most patches dont span unless it's a 64 GB extreme pro card. 64GB gets you around 100 minutes of footage. High movement/detail scenes tend to sit around 85Mb/s on Drewnet.

  • Hi, I'm sure this has been answered, but i'm having a bit of trouble finding the answer.

I was wondering if my 128gb 45mb/s Sandisk Extreme sd card would work with the Drewnet T9 hack?

also if anyone has any idea, generally how much recording time total can you get out of a 64gb 95mb/s sd card using the Drewnet T9 hack?

thanks a lot for the help in advance!

  • Anyone have experience with Sony's ultra high speed cards? I stumbled across them today and the price point is much better than the Sandisk Extreme Pros, but I wonder how legitimate the speed claim is (94 MB/s). http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-64gb-high-speed-secure-digital-high-capacity-sdhc-class-10-uhs-1-memory-card/1702025.p?id=1219060820220&skuId=1702025

It seems they have extremely good reviews over at B&H. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/917685-REG/sony_sf32ux_tqn_32gb_sdhc_uhs_1_memory_card.html

  • I took the plunge and used the 80 mb/s and moon T7 worked fine and dandy.

  • I seem to remember SDXC don't work regardless.

  • I ordered a 64gb 45 mb/s in the hope of spanning moon T7, it wouldn't on my 32gb. The supplier has sent the SDXC UHS-I 80 mb/s. Does anyone know if this will span, I don't want to open it and find it doesn't and find they won't refund because it's opened. ??? Thank you.

  • Here's someone who has done some benchmarks:

    http://www.threeguyswithcameras.com/2013/07/stealth-upgrade-sandisk-extreme-sd-cards-80-mbs-version

"The results are impressive! It achieved a maximum write speed of 73.95MBps and a maximum read speed of 90.69MBps. This is a little higher than the rated 80MBps read/60MBps write speeds."

  • @Panamedia

I'm curious too. The price is definitely right for hte 64GB card. Here's a quote from an Amazon reviewer though.

There are so many class 10 SD cards in the market for people to choose from but these strike a good balance between speed and price. The fastest SanDisk SD cards are the Extreme Pro line of cards. Those are very expensive. They cost about 50% more and yet have similar speeds, 95MS/s vs. 80MB/s read speeds to these.

This card is made in China.

I've tested this card against some of the others I've owned over the year and it has by far the fastest Read speeds out of the bunch. What's surprising is the fact that the slower rated 45MB/s Extreme card has a slightly faster Write speed.

For example, here are the approximate transfer times of a 400MB file using my Macbook Pro built in SD card reader.

Sandisk Extreme 80MB/s Class 10 Card: Write 26.5 Seconds Read 19.8 Seconds

Sandisk Extreme 45MB/s Class 10 Card (Current generation): Write 24.5 Seconds Read 22.3 Seconds

This Sony 40MB/s Class 10 Card (Current generation): Write 44 Seconds Read 24.2 Seconds

Sandisk Extreme III Class 6 Card (Not bad for a 4 year old card!): Write 31.8 Seconds Read 23.3 Seconds

  • There are a lot of fake Sandisk cards around. Have you written to Sandisk support? I suspect they will have a document pointing out the differences between fake and original
