Dead 3D still grows
  • As 3D TV continues to grow, competition between two main 3D technologies is heating up, and film patterned retarder is finally catching up to the more established shutter glass approach. According to research firm DisplaySearch, demand for 3D patterned retarder film is expected to reach 34 million units in 2013.

"Despite the fact that 3D TV has not grown as fast as many in the industry expected, the penetration rate is still growing steadily. Nearly 30% of LCD TV panels shipped in 2013 will have 3D capability," noted Yoonsung Chung, director of large-size displays for DisplaySearch. "3D patterned retarder film reportedly minimizes eye fatigue, and demand for it is growing at a much faster pace. It is forecast to account for 48% of total 3D TV panel shipments in 2013, up from 39% in 2011."

And 4K passive 3D panels will be absolutely perfect thing :-)

  • A couple of the 4K passive 3D panels demonstrated really do work very well. Still, its a ways out before we have a way of delivering 4k signals to home 4k TVs - and hope that 4K TVs will eventually cost less than a luxury automobile :)

In fact, good source 4K material with 50-60Mbps bitrate is pretty enough (3D will be just anamorphic shots inside 4K frame). And it is just Blue-ray. H.265 will allow to encrease quality even more.
