Capitalism: Chrome and Firefox will dump FTP support
  • On the way to "safe" and censored internet you need to remove all possible way to circumvent this.
Mainstream thing is constant media attacks on nonencrypted HTTP paired with constant interface changes to show it as inferior.
Now they want to start deprecating FTP support as it can be used to transparently serving elements on the page or documents.
Goal is to have full control over certificates and, as such, being able to wipe out thousands of sites without legal reason or asking.
Same as Twitter, Paypal, Youtube are doing this year already.

I doubt any efforts to deprecate FTP support in web browsers has very much to do with capitalism. I would guess it is driven much more by the developer side of things (rather than management) as the developers do not want to continue to maintain code like FTP which is seldom used in web browsers.

If there were a significant profit motive for disabling FTP in web browsers, it would have been done years ago with few complaints, as the number of people that actually use this feature in browsers is very small. There are already lots of dedicated FTP clients for people that need the protocol.

Incidentally, Firefox is developed by the Mozilla Foundation which is a non-profit organization.

Info is from their managers remarks made in last 5 months.

No, they could not done this "years" ago, as each step require good media assistance as well as preparations on development side and coordination with political camp.

Firefox is developed by the Mozilla Foundation which is a non-profit organization.

Yet, this NPO closely followed all top browsers in all their steps towards total censorship.
