The first product for the SoundField By RØDE family is a marriage of SoundField’s pristine ambisonic recording technology, and RØDE’s commitment to audio excellence accessible by all creators. Completely designed and made in Australia at RØDE’s Sydney campus, the NT-SF1 is a triumph of innovation and manufacturing quality. Featuring four of RØDE’s all-new, ultra-quiet ½-inch TF45C capsules in tetrahedral array, the NT-SF1 produces natural, transparent four channel A-format recordings which can be transformed and manipulated in B-Format, courtesy of the soon-to-be-released SoundField by RØDE plugin.

“When The Freedman Group acquired SoundField in late-2016, the aim was to continue producing the premier 360-degree audio capture loved by the professionals who bring us cinema sound and 7.1 broadcast,” says Freedman Group CEO Damien Wilson. “And we are. But, as is the RØDE way, we have brought our manufacturing and design expertise to bear on this new family of microphones. The SoundField By RØDE NT-SF1 is for creators for whom the ultra-high-end SoundField products are out of reach, and delivers results unmatched by all but the most expensive ambisonic microphones.”

Head of RØDE’s New Product Development and former Director of New Product at SoundField for 16 years, Pieter Schillebeeckx, says this is the most exciting development in the technology in decades. “Delivering this kind of professional-use technology at a sub-USD$1000 price point is a world first in the ambisonic world,” he says. “It gives budding VR creators, immersive filmmakers and videogame world builders an accessible and high-quality way to dive into 360-degree-with-height audio capture.”

Due to release soon in 2018, the SoundField By RØDE NT-SF1 will democratise one of the last bastions of high-end recording the way RØDE has always done: with precision, price and unbeatable after-sales service.

Lectrosonics DCHT Digital Audio Transmitter http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21879/lectrosonics-dcht-digital-audio-transmitter Thu, 11 Apr 2019 14:46:36 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21879@/talks/discussions image

Lectrosonics is very pleased to announce the introduction of the DCHT portable digital stereo transmitter. The new DCHT unit is designed for use in film and TV production as both a wireless audio link from a bag or cart system to cameras and as a portable IFB transmitter paired with the Duet digital wireless M2R receiver packs. The DCHT accepts two channels of mic or line level analog signals or an AES digital signal from a mixer and transmits to the receiver or receivers in a purely digital format. The digital architecture of the new DCHT is a third-generation design with specially developed, high-efficiency circuitry for extended operating time on two AA batteries.

The DCHT can tune across the available UHF TV band from 470.100 to 607.950 MHz (470.100 to 614.375 MHz for the export version) in 100 kHz or 25 kHz steps, offering more than 6000 frequencies. The RF output can be set to 10, 25 or 50 mW, thus providing flexibility in terms of operating range for the intended application. The digital architecture allows for AES256-CTR encryption for applications where content security is a concern.

Studio quality, stereo audio performance is assured by high-quality components in the preamp, a wide range of input gain adjustment, and DSP-controlled limiting. Input connections and settings are included for any lavaliere microphone, dynamic microphones, and line-level inputs. Input gain is adjustable over a 51 dB range in 1 dB steps to allow an exact match to the source signal level, maximizing the dynamic range and signal to noise ratio of the system. Accessory input adapter cables are available to handle the variety of sources likely to be used with the DCHT. The 80 dB+ stereo separation between the two audio channels allows two separate mono feeds to be transmitted on a single RF carrier, reducing the number of carriers by half when compared to an analog IFB system.

The DCHT can be powered either with two AA batteries or with external DC using the optional LTBATELIM accessory. A 2-way infrared port on top of the unit provides quick setup for associated receivers, while firmware updates are made via the USB port on the side panel of the housing. A programmable switch on the top panel can be configured as power on/off, as an audio mute, or bypassed altogether. The DCHT housing is constructed of solid machined aluminum with a special hardened coating for lasting ruggedness. Dimensions are 3.45 x 2.44 x .742 inches (88 x 62 x 19 mm) and the weight of the unit is 6.5 oz. (184 g) with batteries and supplied wire belt clip.

The DCHT is available now; MSRP: $2,450.

Sony PCM-D10 Audio Recorder http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21343/sony-pcm-d10-audio-recorder Fri, 18 Jan 2019 18:34:00 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21343@/talks/discussions image

Hi-Res Audio takes your recordings to the next level

Record professional sound with Hi-Res Audio at up to 192kHz/24 bit. Whether it’s your live music set, new podcast episode or breaking news report, the PCM-D10 unlocks a new level of detail and texture.

Connect all your gear with twin XLR/TRS jack

Plug in two inputs for high-quality two-channel recording. Compatible with XLR and TRS connectors, the twin jack gives you more choice over your sources, from mics and mixers to keyboards. These jacks are independently mic or line level switchable and have independent 48V phantom power. You’ll also find a dedicated stereo 3.5mm mini jack input.

Capture flawless sound with dual ADCs

Combining two top-of-the-line AK4558 A/D D/A converters with our own high-quality technology, the PCM-D10 raises the bar for your recordings. Working in tandem, they maximise S/N and allow you to capture flawless sound at up to 192kHz.

Take total control of your input levels

With the variable analog gain amplifier, you can dial in your audio levels with precision. The recorder features independent dials for your L and R channels, so you’re free to adjust both, or just one, of your inputs. And because these are high-quality analog controls, you can adjust the gain smoothly, without the step noise that can be encountered with digital volume.

Analog headphone amp for pitch-perfect playback

Whether you’re monitoring live or reliving the performance, you’ll enjoy clear, detailed audio and high output power from the PCM-D10’s high-quality MAX9723 analog headphone amp. This also features an integrated analog volume controller for smooth adjustment.

High S/N mode

With high S/N mode, you can stop worrying about lost low levels. The PCM-D10’s two ADCs record at different volumes – one regular and one lower – and if any low levels are lost, the device automatically replaces these sections with audio captured at -12dB. The result? Clear recordings for even the most dynamic performances.

Power supplied by batteries or USB-TypeC

Choose from different power supply options to match your recording environment. USB Type-C™ can be more suited to studio time, while dry cell batteries (4xAA) are ideal for recording in the field.

Capture more with up to 256GB of SD card storage

With 16GB internal memory, you’re always ready to lay down Hi-Res recordings. And with the capacity to add up to 256GB of SD card storage, you can record professional audio, even through the longest sessions. Plus, if you turn on Cross-Memory REC mode, the recorder will automatically switch to SD card when you exceed the internal memory, so you can be sure you never miss a take.

Hit record from your smartphone

Use the Sony REC Remote app to start recordings from your smartphone. This helps eliminate the interference sometimes caused by jogging the device when you hit the REC button. You can also use the app to adjust most recording settings, mark tracks and monitor your levels. Available for Android and iOS.

Headphone Calibration. What about it? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17475/headphone-calibration.-what-about-it Mon, 07 Aug 2017 07:46:29 +0000 RoadsidePicnic 17475@/talks/discussions Is there any real benefit of using a calibration profile in a decent headphone (let's say, Superlux Hd681 or better)?

Second, if there's actual benefit in it, when it becomes practical to spend US$ 120,00 on a calibration plugin?

Found that Sonarworks Reference 3 Headphone software and people reviewing it in the internet got me curious.

Here is a quote from their website:
"Hi-end studio sound from your headphones. Headphone calibration is the process of measuring and adjusting the frequency response of headphones in order to precisely match flat and neutral sounding studio monitors in a well treated studio. Standard studio headphones are transformed into perfectly-engineered precision devices. By giving yourself the gift of accurate sound, you can mix and master with total confidence."
https://www.sonarworks.com/headphones/

And here is a quote of a review by Matthew Weiss:
"So is this product just a fancy EQ? Well, yes and no. Essentially, it is just an EQ. However, the curves it’s recreating are not curves that you could simply dial in by ear or with simple measurement of white noise. Sonarworks notes that there is “resolution up to 16000 correction points” which is way more than any market EQ can give you."

DacMagic XS review http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21591/dacmagic-xs-review Thu, 21 Feb 2019 17:22:35 +0000 DrDave 21591@/talks/discussions Over the years, I have tried dozens, if not hundreds of DACs. The high end ones are great, Mytec, Lavry, Grace Audio especially great. There's a lot of computers at work so it isn't practical to fit them all with Myteks, on the other hand, the built in audio is usually pretty cheesy and you can't easily run ASIO, etc. High end ones ($$$) have discrete components, a regulated power supply and a real, separate headphone amp with a proper volume dial.

For the last few years we have been using Weiliang devices. The budget ones are in the $50-$100 range. We buy them on eBay (but beware of fakes). They sound good and are very even and accurate. BTW I really don't like the new AKM chips even though they are all the rage. That's OK, because models with the ESS sabre chips and others are now a bit cheaper.

On a whim, I picked up the DacMagic XS USB portable DAC on eBay freshly refurbed from the factory.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cambridge-Audio-DacMagic-XS-Portable-USB-DAC-Headphone-Amplifier-Gold/253743761348

Comes in different colors. Blue costs more.
This thing is TINY it looks like a deck of cards in the photos but it is light and small. You can take it on trips. USB powered, and there is a USB 3.0 option with a bit better specs and includes a built in ASIO driver. There's two little buttons to change the volume and change modes. I plugged it into my phone and tablet but YMMV of course.

There's some tiny LEDs and two holes. One micro USB and one mini headphone jack. Ultra simple.

OK, blah blah, how does it sound? It sounds expensive. Big, warm, transparent soundstage with lots of depth, detail and presence. The difference between this and a boutique DAC is tiny, and it sounds better than a some of them. It is has the detail you need to edit, with no BS, that's the thing. No DSD, but I will be reviewing a Weiliang if you want that, I never use it myself.

Premiere loaded the ASIO driver no problem. There's a latency setting which will depend on a lot of things. MME works totally fine at 50ms on my system, and it sounds exactly the same so you might want to use that since Premiere's ASIO is not, shall we say, rock solid.

Since it is super portable and cheap, you can buy several and have the same sound at different stations, or you can just unplug it from one device and plug it in another. Be aware that if you turn on Premiere while you are using it elsewhere, like all such devices it will change your settings.

Recommended. (attached photo from DigitalTrends shows the small size and the volume/setup buttons).

Zaxcom Fader Motion Capture http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21548/zaxcom-fader-motion-capture Fri, 15 Feb 2019 09:28:57 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21548@/talks/discussions image

Zaxcom is proud to announce Fader Motion Capture (FMC), a feature that records the fader levels and movements made by the production sound mixer in real time into a separate file. The file can be then imported into a post workflow where the fader movements are replicated in the workstation. This time-saving technology allows post production to edit and remaster the location mix without starting from scratch. “Today, many hours of the location mix can be discarded by post as the mix track is being remixed from isolated tracks,” says Glenn Sanders, President of Zaxcom. “Fader Motion Capture will allow the industry to utilize more of the location mix with the added benefits of a fully editable track and saving time.”

How it works

Fader Motion Capture is available on Deva 24 as a standalone recorder or when paired with Mix-16 or Oasis control surfaces. It creates a separate FADER folder containing “.FAD” files found on Deva 24’s recordings. These files can then be converted into AAF files using free downloadable software called Zaxcom Fader Motion Capture to AAF Converter.

Once converted to AAF, the files can then be imported into the workstation. The new files can be added to any timeline where key frames generated by the location mix can be fully edited and remixed. To view the Fader Motion Capture key frames in the workstation change the audio view to “volume”.

Workstation compatibility

Fader Motion Capture is compatible with Media Composer, Media Composer Ultimate, Pro Tools and Pro Tools Ultimate. To use Fader Motion Capture in Pro Tools, users must first import the converted AAF files into Media Composer then export the audio through Media Composer to be imported into Pro Tools for further editing.

Availability

Fader Motion Capture is standard feature on Deva 24 and is currently available in beta release. The Zaxcom Fader Motion Capture to AAF Converter software is both PC and MAC compatible. You can find out more info by visiting http://zaxcom.com

IK Multimedia iLoud MTM Reference Speakers http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21382/ik-multimedia-iloud-mtm-reference-speakers Thu, 24 Jan 2019 00:31:06 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21382@/talks/discussions

image

IK Multimedia debuts iLoud® MTM, a compact, no-compromise, reference monitor designed to deliver pristine sound and an unprecedented level of accuracy that redefines nearfield monitoring for the modern, computer-based, professional and home studio.

When IK's earlier monitor system, the iLoud Micro Monitors, launched in 2016, producers and engineers at every level marvelled at the performance coming from such a small setup, so IK challenged its design team to push this concept even further and create a new compact design with a sound quality that would rival monitors several times the price and provide innovative features not found anywhere else.

iLoud MTM offers an ultra-flat frequency response, but more importantly, a truly linear phase response as well - a premiere feature in this price segment available only on a handful of products costing considerably more - to provide natural, true-to-life sound. This is achieved through IK's advanced DSP expertise that also provides for digital crossovers and self-calibration derived from IK's award-winning ARC™ System. This enables iLoud MTM monitors to deliver unsurpassed accuracy, clarity and transparency, with a generous 100W RMS power and a class-defying 40 Hz to 24 kHz frequency response. In addition, the symmetrical MTM design provides superior imaging and precision, even at close distances, with a perfectly perfect sweet-spot, thanks to the included tilt-able isolation bases. This enables users to create mixes that will translate across multiple playback systems, with no ear fatigue.

Building upon IK's acclaimed iLoud Micro Monitors, this new compact monitor delivers the accuracy and bass response of larger monitors, and superior audio quality when listening at close distances. This makes iLoud MTM the ideal monitor for nearfield work and a workhorse monitor for desktop use in a home or project studio.

Reference-class, ultra-linear response

The primary role of any studio monitor is to deliver accurate, uncoloured sound for easier mixing decisions that will translate across multiple playback systems. iLoud MTM uses the most advanced DSP techniques to provide total control of the speaker's performance, delivering results simply not obtainable with traditional analogue designs. Highs are neutral and defined, mids and lows are clear and as balanced as ever. Users can mix for hours with no ear fatigue, and their work will translate better than ever.

And of course it's loud, with 100W RMS total power per speaker and 103dB SPL maximum sound pressure, delivering the exceptional volume the iLoud brand is known for.

Digitally-controlled for precision audio

iLoud MTM uses audiophile-grade, high resolution algorithms and top-of-the line A/D converters to carefully manage cross-overs, filtering, time alignment, equalization, dynamics control and auto-calibration. Totally DSP-controlled and precision time-aligned, iLoud MTM also manages the off-axis response to minimize the effects of room reverberation. The advanced onboard processing is the product of IK's over twenty years of experience in digital signal processing, helping iLoud MTM deliver sound far beyond anything in its size or class.

Extended low-end that rivals larger systems

iLoud Micro Monitor surprised the world with bass performance delivered from a 3" speaker that "defied physics". iLoud MTM offers even more, with bass response down to a surprising 40Hz, ideal for modern music styles.

iLoud MTM also debuts IK's new patent-pending Physical Response Linearization (PRL™) system that uses a precise model of the enclosure's design, construction and materials, combined with electro-mechanical measurements of the real units, to correct the system's performance in real time. The result is a stunningly "firm", balanced and defined low end, to surpass the sound of speakers even twice iLoud MTM's size.

A new phase in precision sound reproduction

The great majority of conventional studio monitors - even high-end designs - suffer from skewed phase response caused by traditional, phase-shifting crossovers and driver/enclosure phase alterations. The end result is an unfocused stereo image, blurry transients, and overall lack of detail.

iLoud MTM leverages IK's two decades of DSP experience to offer a true phase coherent response across the useful frequency spectrum, for unbelievably realistic, natural sound. Users will hear instruments and dialogue as if they were happening live, discover more detail in their tracks than ever before, and avoid wasting hours trying to EQ away issues that were never there. This linear phase response is rarely found in speakers even several times iLoud MTM's price.

Symmetrical design for superior imaging and precision

iLoud MTM uses a midrange-tweeter-midrange symmetrical design, with a pair of 3.5" high performance woofers and one 1" high definition tweeter, which provide ultra-precise, defined, point-source sound that simply can't be achieved by traditional 2-way systems at close distances.

The result is a more natural, life-like sound that minimizes the ear fatigue caused by traditional 2- or 3-way designs where different frequencies arrive at the listener's ears at different times, so users can mix longer with less effort.

iLoud MTM's design also offers exceptional sound dispersion, enhancing the transparency and neutrality. The controlled dispersion minimizes the impact of room acoustics, for even truer monitoring. The end result is faster, easier mixing with better results. On top of that, this innovative design keeps the monitor dimensions to a minimum (30 to 50% smaller than comparable monitors), to fit in even the smallest spaces.

Instantly adjust to the acoustic environment

Today's studios range from dedicated, acoustically-treated spaces to a spare bedroom. To help optimize the monitoring for any room's particular acoustics, iLoud MTM monitors feature built-in acoustic auto-calibration derived from IK's award winning ARC™ System, with IK's reference ARC™ microphone included, to automatically adjust the frequency response to their positioning. Users simply set up the monitors, place the mic in the preferred listening position, and press a button to instantly provide custom calibration for the specific listening environment. iLoud MTM also offers a low-frequency extension control and low and high-frequency trim controls to adjust the response to suit individual tastes.

Always get the perfect angle

iLoud MTM includes a tilting mount that not only helps isolate it, but also adjusts from 0° to 20° for correct positioning in a wide range of setups. That's higher than most other "tilting" monitors that too often can't actually reach the required angle for desktop or other close-listening setups. To cover the full spectrum of installation options, a rubber base for horizontal shelf-placement, and a bottom thread to mount conveniently on mic stands, are also included.

Combined with its symmetrical design and phase-coherent response, iLoud MTM allows for ultra-focused, accurate monitoring anywhere.

Price and availability

iLoud MTM will be available in Q2, 2019 at a MSRP of €349.99* each.
