Zaxcom and why patents must go to hell with capitalism as company http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15867/zaxcom-and-why-patents-must-go-to-hell-with-capitalism-as-company Mon, 10 Oct 2016 16:17:18 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 15867@/talks/discussions At first read this affecting http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11531/tascam-dr-10c-recorder-for-lavaliers/p1

Zaxcom also delayed JuicedLink Little DARling - http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9974/juicedlink-little-darling-recorder

Initially case seems like not too important (now Tascam backed off removing output in US and restricting to 3.5mm input only).
It actually states that Zaxcom will prevent selling in US any device that have both wireless audio transmission and recording. Case is even not about such device, but one part of such device. And it is really big with current technology. As patents prevent making really affordable and in same time fully reliable systems what also have local recorded backup audio.

What else Zaxcom prevents to appear in your everyday life?

How about ability for recorder to make 32-bit floating wave (and even 24bit files) files using two parallel DACs aimed at different levels? It is possible to record two separate files as many recorders do, but not to join them in portable recorder. It is patented by Zaxcom.

How about wireless timecode transmission to multiple recorders? Patented by Zaxcom.

Add here patents on wireless transmission methods and encodings.

All of this produce big damage in the interest of few capitalists, and no, this guys did not invented anything, their engineers did and long ago they compensated all expenses.

AT875R mic phantom powered directly by the GH2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3197/at875r-mic-phantom-powered-directly-by-the-gh2 Sun, 13 May 2012 02:06:01 +0000 balazer 3197@/talks/discussions Here is a small secret: some microphones that require phantom power with a minimum of 9-12 V will operate happily using the 2.5-v "plug-in" power provided by the GH2's mic port. I have my GH2 set up with the Audio-Technica AT875R, and I am very pleased with the results.

More details: http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3197/at875r-mic-phantom-powered-directly-by-the-gh2#Item_7

Audio samples: http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3197/at875r-mic-phantom-powered-directly-by-the-gh2#Item_11

Which phantom powered mics will operate on such a low voltage? Electret condenser mics (i.e. permanently charged) are good candidates. You'll also want a mic with high sensitivity, to give a high SNR given the noise of the GH2's pre-amps and the quantization noise of 16-bit samples. I speculate that mics that can operate on a low-voltage battery are good candidates. But ultimately you'll have to test the mic to see how well it works. Here's more info: http://recording.org/pro-audio-gear/30016-phantom-power-is-a-mystery.html

How do you wire the mic cable? From my testing, the AT875R can be wired with XLR pin 3 unconnected, or shorted to pin 1, which apparently means it is impedance balanced. Here are wiring references:
http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/site/4ffc7039c199613a/index.html/index.html#unbalancedinput http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/discuss/feedback/newsletter/2008/05/2/helpful-how-tos-how-properly-connect-balanced-outputs-unbalanced-input

You must lose something by operating the mic under spec, right? Generally speaking, the max sound pressure level before distortion will be reduced somewhat, and the sensitivity will be reduced a tiny bit. Judging by the specs of other Audio-Technica shotgun mics that can operate on phantom power or from a 1.5-V battery, the max SPL is reduced by about 10 dB. Even with that reduction, the max SPL is still quite high - so high that if you are in that environment, you better be wearing earplugs. I tested some loud sounds, and I was getting distortion inside the GH2 with the mic level setting set to 1 (the lowest gain setting) before I got any distortion from the mic.

Of course the weak point in any GH2 mic connection is the 2.5-mm jack. I got the highest quality cable with a right-angle connector that I could find, and made my cable just the right length to keep it secure and out of the way. The link is unbalanced, so to minimize interference, use a shielded cable and keep it short.

The GH2's lack of real-time audio monitoring prevents the use of the mic port for any application in which the audio is critical. But you can work around the lack of monitoring to a certain extent. Plug the mic into something that does allow monitoring (e.g. the Zoom H1), and do some walk-around tests to identify problems. I found and eliminated noise coming from my shock mount, cable, and XLR connector. You can also record a short test video and play it back and listen through the GH2's terrible, tiny speaker before shooting.

The shock mount configuration in my photos is intended to have a very low profile. A more standard configuration would put the shock mount higher and allow for the use of wide-angle lenses. But in my configuration the mic is out of the view of all of my lenses, including the Lumix 20-mm. I swapped and reconfigured the elastic bands to improve the isolation and give a slight upward tilt that keeps the mic out of the lens's view.

With the GH2 mic level set to 4 (the highest gain setting), speaking in a normal voice from about 3 feet in front of the mic puts the meter at 7 bars, just into the red.

Compared to the MKE-400, the AT875R has better rejection of off-axis sounds, and the shock mount I'm using performs much, much better than the one built into the MKE-400. I might have been satisfied with the MKE-400, except for its shock mount. Every time my finger touched the camera, you could hear it in the recording.

Lectrosonics DBSM and DBSMD bodypack transmitters http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/25515/lectrosonics-dbsm-and-dbsmd-bodypack-transmitters Wed, 14 Apr 2021 02:11:28 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 25515@/talks/discussions image

Lectrosonics introduced two newest members of the digital wireless microphone system family, the DBSM single battery and DBSMD dual-battery bodypack transmitters.

The new units are fully compatible with the DSQD digital receiver, DCHR digital portable receiver, and DCR822 compact dual channel digital receiver and feature a tuning range covering both the A1 and B1 bands from 470 to 608 MHz (470 to 614 MHz for the E01 international versions). The new transmitters include specially developed, high efficiency circuitry for extended operating time on AA batteries, and offer RF power selections at 10, 25 and 50 mW. In addition, a new, selectable high-density transmission mode (HDM) allows for much tighter channel spacing, yielding more than double the operating frequencies per available spectrum. Firmware updates are now available for the DSQD, DCHR, and DCR822 receivers, and updates for the Mac and PC versions of Wireless Designer software, to make use of this this new high-density mode.

With an audio frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz in standard transmission mode, a dynamic range of 112 dB, and a flat in-band phase response, the DBSM and DBSMD provide studio-grade sound, with low noise, for the most demanding productions.

The DBSM and DBSMD can be configured as either transmitters or recorders, with files stored on microSD card memory in the industry standard Broadcast Wave .wav (BWF) format at 24 bits, 48 kHz sample rate. The TA5M mic/line connector also acts as a timecode input for jam sync with master clocks on set, making audio file alignment quick and easy in post-production. The internal clock provides accuracy of <1ppm for all-day operation.

The microSD memory card can also be used to update the units’ firmware in the field. The DBSM and DBSMD respond to remote “dweedle tone” commands, available via 3rd party apps such as New Endian’s LectroRM and PDR Remote, allowing users to change settings including frequency, audio level, lock/unlock, and to start or stop recording.

The durable, machined aluminum housings are the same size and shape as the previous generation SMWB and SMDWB units so that standard accessories are compatible, including belt clips, battery eliminators, and pouches. The input wiring is also the same as previous generation SM Series transmitters, allowing the use of existing lavaliere and headset microphones wired for either servo-bias or “universal” inputs, along with adapter cables for line inputs and dynamic mics. The two-way IR port ensures quick setup and allows for data sharing between units including frequency tuning groups and encryption keys when in shared key management mode.

The DBSM and DBSMD support encryption in a 256 bit AES, CTR mode format for robust security, meeting FIPS 197 and 140-2 standards. Four different key management modes can be employed, including Universal – where all units in the system share the same default key; Shared – where a unique key is created and can be shared between transmitters and between transmitters and receivers; Standard – where a unique key is created but cannot be shared between transmitters or from transmitters to receivers; and Volatile – where every session requires a new key.

“The SM Series of miniature transmitters has been immensely popular since their original introduction four generations and more than and 15 years ago,” says Karl Winkler, VP of sales & marketing at Lectrosonics, Inc. “This latest generation brings these body-worn transmitters into the digital era, with a host of important features. The high-density mode alone will be a huge problem solver for a wide range of users. And the option to record gives these transmitters enormous flexibility for the demanding applications our users encounter on a daily basis”.

MSRP is $2,350 for the single-battery DBSM and $2,450 for the dual-battery DBSMD. Availability: Q2, 2021

for nostalgic reasons, I want to produce a video with my beloved original BMPCC. Therefore I want to pair the camera with a JuicedLink BMC388 preamp. However, the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore and neither do the instructional videos on youtube. There are some tweaks that need to be done in order to make the BMPCC and BMC388 work flawlessly together. Audio meter calibration, input volume...

As all the manuals and instructional videos have vanished from the internet, maybe there's someone on this forum who is familiar with the procedure and can provide me with a short instruction?

I appreciate it! Thank you.
