With the development of SuperNATURAL sound and Behaviour Modelling technology, Roland has blurred the boundary between acoustic and electronic instruments. Built upon these core technologies, the new INTEGRA-7 sound module gives musicians a gold mine of the latest SuperNATURAL sounds in a fast-access, fully-stocked 16-part module. The powerhouse rack comprises a “greatest hits” collection of sounds from Roland’s flagship keyboards and V-Drums modules, plus all 12 boards in the acclaimed SRX library. Then there’s a new technology called Motional Surround, a 17-part ambience engine that lets you graphically control the distance and position of each part within a 360-degree sound field. With the immense power of the INTEGRA-7, you can create amazingly realistic and detailed orchestral arrangements, as well as immersive, spatial sounds, and beyond.

  • Flagship synth module with over 5,000 sounds built in
  • The latest SuperNATURAL sounds with enhanced Behaviour Modelling technology for expressive acoustic instruments and accurate reproduction of performance articulations
  • Powerful SuperNATURAL synth engine with fat analogue synth models and vintage filter types
  • Dynamic SuperNATURAL drum engine with natural tonal change, derived from Roland V-Drums
  • For producers, the “must-have” SRX Expansion sound library is built in; all 12 SRX titles included
  • Dedicated multi-effects and EQ for each part (16 parts), plus dedicated COMP+EQ (use six simultaneously) for drums and ambience parameters for SuperNATURAL drum kits
  • Innovative 17-part Motional Surround ambience engine for stereo, headphone, and 5.1-channel output
  • INTEGRA-7 Editor for iPad and Motional Surround VSTi Editor for SONAR software

Korg Volca Analogue Grooveboxes http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6652/korg-volca-analogue-grooveboxes Wed, 10 Apr 2013 06:56:27 +0000 oscillian 6652@/talks/discussions These look like loads of fun!

Volca Keys is a simple but supposedly powerful polyphonic analogue synth with loop sequencer; Volca Bass is a 3-oscillator analogue bass synth with an Electribe-inspired 16-step sequencer; and Volca Beats features analogue drum sounds inspired by classic rhythm machines and a 16-step sequencer.

Each of the instruments features MIDI IN – something that was sadly lacking on Korg's previous pint-sized synth offerings - and sync jacks. The Volcas can be battery powered and come with built-in speakers. They can be used individually or in combination.

Best of all, we hear that each Volca is set to sell for $150, which leads us to suspect that these things are going to fly off the shelves.

Stereo for a small theatre presentation? Good/Bad? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6643/stereo-for-a-small-theatre-presentation-goodbad Tue, 09 Apr 2013 09:33:29 +0000 sam_stickland 6643@/talks/discussions Hi,

I'm unexpectedly having an amateur film (more a labour of love really) screened in a small local theatre next week. I didn't really prepare the audio for theatre presentation - it's just a stereo mix, and I don't have any experience in mixes for theatre presentation.

I'm not interested in a 5.1 mix, but should I be worried about not using the centre channel? The threatre seats around 150 people, but it's quite narrow - typically 11 seats across (see picture).

Thankfully we do have the opportunity to test the screening this week. Delivery format can be DCP or Bluray.

So I think my options are:

  • Put the "stereo" mix in DCP, which will probably be encoded LCR, with no centre - will this sound odd? Plus, to be honest, DCP is probably overkill.
  • Put the stereo mix into Bluray encode - I have no idea if a stereo mix will just use the left/right channels, or if the cinema system will output a L+R mix to the centre. Needs testing
  • Create an LCR/5.1 (no surround or LFE) by either:
    • Creating the centre mix by adding the left and right channels (-3dB on each, or -3dB on total?)
    • Re-rending my audio as a "background/music" stem and a "dialog/foley" stem and create a mix that puts the dialog on centre, and the backgrounds on the L/R. Is it worth the time to do this? And if I do this should the placement onto the speakers be hard, or should I let a little of the music onto the centre and a little of the dialogue on to left and rights?

Any advice very much appreciated!

Recommendation on sound recording system http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6609/recommendation-on-sound-recording-system- Fri, 05 Apr 2013 13:29:00 +0000 Brian_Siano 6609@/talks/discussions I do some work with a theater company, and one of our longstanding problems is that the theater itself has terrible acoustics. I use a Rode Videomic for shooting, and that's nice, but the quality's not perfect.

So we're looking into other strategies. I like the idea of getting lapel mikes, having the actors wear smartphones or recorders, and syncing the tracks up in post. Good aspects; cheap, simple, easily expandable to any number of performers.

Someone suggested that we get a system where the mikes send wireless signals to a central recorder. I'm not keen on this, because it may be expensive, it may be difficult to balance the sounds afterward, and the number of mikes may be limited. But I don't know, so I agreed to ask around for such a system.

We're shooting with DSLRs (mostly GH2's), so that may be a factor here.

Any suggestions?

Skills involving multiple take narration sessions http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6578/skills-involving-multiple-take-narration-sessions Tue, 02 Apr 2013 12:56:16 +0000 Riker 6578@/talks/discussions I'm currently working on a video that features narrative part. 5 minutes of talking. The narrator is all over the place with his schedule and he insists on recording on his own (I guess he's shy and wants to do it alone at his home).

I gave him my Zoom and lav, and he recorded the thing in one day...so I mixed all the clips and sent him the mp3 - and now he wants some segments changed, few seconds/couple of words here and there. But he doesn't want to record it all from the start.

Is it possible to equalize this somehow, to make it sound as uniform as possible?

New Reason Rack Extensions from Numerical Sound http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6422/new-reason-rack-extensions-from-numerical-sound Sun, 17 Mar 2013 18:36:04 +0000 thepalalias 6422@/talks/discussions I thought I would share a new (as well as an almost new) Rack Extension for Reason that I consulted on for Numerical Sound.

First, there's Tone Mutation Instruments, a quick way to try out different timbral variations on your sounds with just a couple clicks. It uses convolution technology to take the harmonic content of 36 different sound sources (guitars, instruments, etc.) and apply it to your sounds and recordings. http://shop.propellerheads.se/product/tone-mutation-instruments/

Then there's ReStereo, which expands any mono signal into stereo in a much more natural and detailed fashion than existing plug-ins, and often with much greater phase coherence and control. It can be made to sound very subtle and several of the presets sound more like the signal was simply recorded in a different fashion, as opposed to more like an effect. http://shop.propellerheads.se/product/restereo/

Anyway, I'm sharing these (whereas I normally don't talk much about my Numerical Sound work) because 1) they are in a much lower price bracket than NS products normally are and 2) I noticed that the Reason 7 announcement is one of the most recent in the Sound and Music section - and all of these plug-ins are fully compatible with Reason 6 and later, as well as Reason Essentials 1.5 and later.

ReStereo is one that I find especially useful for helping expand shotgun mics and other mono soundsources and I hope that they prove useful to all of you as well. In my experience, each product represents the best version of the color it sets out to achieve - no competing product matches them, but that doesn't mean that color is right for everybody. :)

Each of them has a 30-day fully-functional free trial so you might as well check it out if the concept interests you. Let me know @Vitaliy_Kiselev if there's anything I should do to help make sure the announcement doesn't read too much like SPAM. :)

Upcoming: Free EQ and FX Presets for GH2 Internal Mic and Rode VMP (Possibly GH3) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6091/upcoming-free-eq-and-fx-presets-for-gh2-internal-mic-and-rode-vmp-possibly-gh3 Mon, 11 Feb 2013 16:12:27 +0000 thepalalias 6091@/talks/discussions Some of my recent conversations with GH2 users made me realize that a lot of people could benefit from some decent EQ presets specifically tailored to the GH2 and some of the mics used with it.

I won't make some big marketing push for why mine would be better than anybody else's - in the last decade and a half of working with software FX I've learned there are a lots of ways to make things sound great. I also won't make any money off of this so there would be no point. :) But I do want to make it as easy as possible for people that aren't used to dealing with EQ to get a good sound.

Now here's the part where you come in. The tricky part of making presets is that they have to be widely usable. I'll be making these on a Windows machine (I spend more time in Windows than OS X) so whatever plug-in I make them for will need to work in that environment. I am thinking I would like to use the free ReaPlugs suite from Cockos, but my question is whether people would prefer that I use those or the ones native to Reaper itself?

If I use the ones internal to Reaper, then I seem to remember they may also work on OS X. But if I use the ReaPlugs suite, they will work in any host but Windows only.

Here are the links to each: http://www.reaper.fm/ http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/index.php

So, which version would you guys prefer? Feel free to suggest other free plug-ins or other microphones you would like covered. I'm open to doing the same thing for the GH3 if there's sufficient interest.

I've finished with the video and audio edit but the audio sounds flat. It's much too even to be realistic. So what I want to do is to cue Premiere to a point in the edit where the scene ambiance changes, and then edit that part of the sound with proper sound effect for that ambiance. (I don't think I can manage it with Premiere's set of effects).

Is there a way to do this and make the audio smooth in on the effect rather than just jump in - while I'm editing in reference to the exact part of the timeline?
