i finished the video. Sent it to her and she hasnt replied but the video sucks. I didnt even put my name on it. If given my freedom i would have not used the backgrounds and did something else. Which i told her. But she insisted so i gave her what she wanted.

I have done tests working with Media Composer/Quicktime/Sorenson and have a succesful workflow for converting framerates preserving lengths.

Could some experienced USA operators advise me what specifications I should convert the clips to, to have the best chance of them having the correct file for broadcast when they are over there?

I am thinking I should give them both SD and HD at 59.97, on a DVD and a Blueray respectively.
Would that cover most requests from stations/broadcasters.

Thanks in advance

Options for online or DVD courses in editing and sound http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1580/options-for-online-or-dvd-courses-in-editing-and-sound Mon, 28 Nov 2011 20:08:12 +0000 zcream 1580@/talks/discussions The best online "school" in terms of value seems to be lights film school.

What resources do you know for doing a course, either online or through DVDs ?
By a course, I mean a planned schedule, sample footage, etc.
I was especially interested in sound design in post, as there are limited options for "learning by doing".

I have a lot of footage taken for my film, but now I'm stuck trying to design the sound and editing properly.

I know we have reviewed lots of books, but these not a "course", more like a reference.]]>

Great, now we can make video edits and quality playback similar to you get on HDTV, so how do you create that nice Hollywood slow motion. 1 program is Twixtor, which seems to be the best but for me it just takes soooooo long to render and in the end you get slow playback but some jagged objects as the Twixtor trys to compensate for the extra frames it put in. Is it worth the $250?

De-interlace GH2 footage in Premiere? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1421/de-interlace-gh2-footage-in-premiere Fri, 11 Nov 2011 03:46:50 +0000 rom 1421@/talks/discussions
So three questions basically. 1. Is there a way to get Premiere to recognize and deinterlace the 60 frames and turn it into 24p footage? 2. Do I even need to deinterlace for Twixtor? 3. Avixdemux recognized the footage as 60i, and I've seen posts where people use third-party software to deinterlace. Is Premiere not a good tool for this job?

Thanks very much for any help.]]>
Filmmode Settings Tests: detail handling, color shift, exposure, etc. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1248/filmmode-settings-tests-detail-handling-color-shift-exposure-etc. Sat, 22 Oct 2011 16:48:09 +0000 qwerty123 1248@/talks/discussions
So here's one thread to start that. If you look at the pictures attached, there are four blown up frame grabs (from video, not still). They are: Standard, Cinema, Nostalgic, and Smooth. These all have the same white balance setting, shot with same lens, aperature, shutter speed, and lighting (a practical floor lamp). The picture profile settings are at 0 for everything except sharpening which is -2. This is pre-hack.

There are few noticeable things.

One thing in particular stood out to me, which I don't think people talk about. Look at how highlight and midtone *DETAIL* is handled on mode.

1. Cinema captures more highlight detail than the other settings--the wall on cinema has detail that was actually there, whereas in the other modes there are patches of white mixed with wall detail. These patches aren't blown out highlights!

2. At the same time Cinema captures midtone detail pretty poorly relative to the others. To see this, on the phone jack panel to the left of the phone jack. There are smears there in nostalgic especially that were present, but that cinema doesn't capture.

3. Nostaligic also has a pretty bad color shit to yellow (with a touch of shift to red) as you can confirm by a waveform.

4. Finally, it's worth noting that to achieve comparable exposures in each profile, one might need to allow for a bit more light in cinema and a bit less light in nostalgic.

Thoughts?

I've also been curious about what @cbrandin has been up to with his film mode research (or whether that's petered out).

EDIT: color shit = color shift :p]]>
GH2 red interlace issue? Or is it a premiere cs5 issue? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1383/gh2-red-interlace-issue-or-is-it-a-premiere-cs5-issue Mon, 07 Nov 2011 09:15:47 +0000 RRRR 1383@/talks/discussions
I've found out a very strange phenomenon with gh2 footage in (at least) premiere cs5. The reds look interlaced (jagged) while everything else is normal. Iv'e found that the same footage looks better in VLC aswell. I've of course matched the sequence to the footage and it has occurred with several different camera settings - it becomes obvious only with strong reds.

I wonder if someone else have encountered a similar problem and if you have any suggestions as to why it happens? (possible solutions?)]]>

Expose To The Right (ETTR) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1034/expose-to-the-right-ettr Tue, 27 Sep 2011 01:20:57 +0000 stoney 1034@/talks/discussions
These articles give us glimpse into one dark area of DSLR revolution. Our latest and greatest DSLRs still use 100+ years old exposure technology that used to work well with film gadgets. But "CCD and CMOS chips are linear devices." That inherent characteristic of digital sensors doesn't work nicely with the traditional exposure technology that the camera makers are still implementing. Interestingly this might explain why overblown highlight area could suck up most of encoding bits from GH2. The film modes like Smooth and Nostalgic with smooth highlight roll-off seem blessing.

For 2x crop sensor, I guess a recommended minimum SS would be twice faster. e.g. 1/100 SS for 50mm. Or roughly 1.85 times faster for 16:8 ratio.

If we use 1/60 SS for video, focal length longer than 35mm would need more stabilization... I guess. Or am I utterly wrong about this?]]>

1. I have hacked my previously unhackable GH17 with all of the popular patches and a couple of my own modified patches using ptool 362.

2. Of all patches I have tried, lpowell's max latitude 100mbps patch seems to have the highest average bit rate according to Media Info.

3. Media Info says the max latitude patch has a max overall bit rate of 108 Mbps and averages 20.8 Mbps

4. Media Info says that footage from my unhacked GH17 has a max overall bit rate of 18 Mbps and averages 11.8 Mbps

5. Once my footage is transferred into Final Cut Pro 7 using Pro Res 422, the data rate in FCP7 of my unhacked footage averages 17 MBps while the data rate of my hacked footage averages about 13.5 MBps.

6. This discrepancy makes no sense to me. And moreover it would seem that if you edit in FCP7 that you are better off not hacking the GH1. Is this assumption correct? Can someone share more information on this issue?]]>

Mr.Kwon is a famous photographer in Korea, and he loves m43 for photo. G3 + 14-42mm and GF1 + 25mm 0.95. There's something special about his street photos. Just stare at the photos. Feel like standing right in front of the scenes? He's using standard focal length around 25mm. Eye-level framing. Mundane scenes. Really nothing special about the subjects. But the photos look great. Strikingly all JPEGs. Nothing but sharpening and resizing. I think that's a darn good way to practice videography. Forget about RAW photo. Start taking JPEG photo.

I'm having some issues after testing different setting's on 1080p/720p with the GH2 Cam.
In Vlc it looks ok, but when imported in Final cut pro x, the image is distorted/blurry it's worse with 720p.
Tried to load the default firmware, but no difference.
If i import some footage from a none hacked GH2 from a friend it looks ok!

Do other people use Final Cut and have the same result after they hacked/changed the firmware?

Very useful to get a clear picture of how your hard disk is performing for video.... and to compare say a laptop drive to a desktop.... or maybe to compare a SSD to a traditional drive. Do you know how fast your hard drives are running? Here are screenshots of my RAID and then just my system disk. Compare the two.....BIG difference:
