Amelie short - Competition finalist - shot on 600D http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2167/amelie-short-competition-finalist-shot-on-600d Wed, 01 Feb 2012 16:43:18 +0000 Cheekorobbins 2167@/talks/discussions My New Years resolution was to find a competition to enter and get something filmed, I decided on the Jameson Empire - Done in 60 Seconds competition and have been selected as a finalist!

Wanted to share the video and, if you like it, please vote for me on the link below.

Vote Here

Filmed on my Canon 600D(1920x1080 @ 24fps) over two days. I only decided to enter the competition at the start of January and the deadline was the 20th so I didn't have as much time as I would've liked, fitting it around my day job(animator/3D generalist). Decided to spend 2 weeks planning and refining the idea and a week to put together an animatic and then assemble everything from there.

Location is in my flat, actress is my wife(who is an actress, handy!), I've still got a lot to learn about lighting so I'm not entirely happy with the look. Lamp lighting for the sofa and laptop close up shots and we have no plug sockets downstairs so just had to suffer the ceiling halogens :(

Used a bare bulb for the close up shots of the hands which I'm happier with(the typing one worked best I felt)

I used the Tamron 17-50 2.8 for all of it, I'm kicking myself for not using the 50mm 1.8(what was I thinking!?) mainly on a tripod and a shoulder rig for the final shot outside the door.

Edited in Premiere and graded in After Effects using Colorista II, once again I was short on time but was able to get a general warm hue on the live action shots and a green hue on the computer screens in fitting with the Amelie movie and the colour palettes used for her appartment and the outside world. Ended up being so tight on the deadline I didn't get to do a noise reduction and sharpening pass unfortunately.

I was going to just do the computer shots in after effects and apply a filter to get the screen look but after some tests it actually worked best just filming the monitor so I stuck with that, most of it is just me manipulating layers in photoshop in realtime(in the splitscreen email shot the cursor that appears is the move one if you look closely, couldn't find a workaround for that :) )

If there are any lighting/gaffers on here living in the London area that are looking for projects to get involved in I'd love to hear from you, it's definitely a weakness.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it. If you voted, thanks very much!

Comments and feedback welcome.

I ask, is there any links you can post of people that already have done a test with these two camera's? I'd like to see what others have done before I do mine.

I want to test only image quality. That seems to be what people are always bickering about. We all know the benefits of SDI, price, ND, smaller size, and which camera has each benefit. It's the image in question.

All tests will be done with the same lenses. I think 5 different camera configurations are needed to do the test correctly. Here are the 5 I'm thinking.
1. AF100, 24p, with Abel's "RANGE" settings, AVCHD.
2. AF100, 24p, with Abel's "RANGE" settings, ProRes via external recorder.
3. GH2, 24p, best high latitude settings, stock.
4. GH2, 24p, best high latitude settings, highest quality yet reliable long GOP hack.
5. GH2, 24p, best high latitude settings, highest quality yet reliable I-frame only hack.

What are the preferred high latitude settings for the GH2? As for what hack settings to use, I'm open for suggestions as well. I'm leaning toward cbrandins 66mbps AQ2 and Driftwoods latest 176mbps version.]]>

Unbe****inglievable. Used Quantum V5 the entire time - I'm probably going to be grading this with @shian 's new Colorghear tool after I watch a bunch of tutorials (loved the grades that were coming out of his vimeo channel, major accomplishment @shian) - but for now I did a just did a quick and dirty Magic Bullet grade to show the band some of the footage. Hope you enjoy, and suggestions, comments, and perhaps even downright insults are always welcome.

The 1st grab is at full resolution, and then my fCP decided it no longer wanted to continue exporting so the rest are smaller screen captures. Also, the different aspect ratios were done on purpose so the band could see what they liked.

this is my first post, and my first short film using a GH2 and a 40 + year old switar 26mm lens, there is some minor vignetting in the corners on bright scenes, it has been hacked and is shooting at around 60 mbits variable depending on scene

the film is 3 minutes long and its about a young woman with Down Syndrome, and the realisation that her 75 year old adopted father may have to place her into full time care as he struggles to cope with the issues of careing for her, its more a visual poem, and suitable for all age groups

I have entered it in the shooting people film of the month, every viewing helps to keep me on the leader board, you can't vote if your not a fully paid up member, but just veiwing would be much appreciated and it helps me keep up the list, link is below, its called Michelle, and it was all shot in Ireland

any feedback would be welcome

thanks Mark

GH2 INTRA Demo: It's Collaboration Time! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1268/gh2-intra-demo-its-collaboration-time Mon, 24 Oct 2011 22:23:44 +0000 driftwood 1268@/talks/discussions
I would like to put together a demo of the GH2 in INTRA mode to show off various settings for a Driftwood (Vimeo & downloadable) Spectacular to show its capabilities. I would like as many different scenes, lenses, EX Tele, iDynamic, etc...

The subject matter can be anything so long as it is only ONE scene location and lasts a maximum of 10 seconds. I want a collage of great variety to put together from around the world. Can be landscapes, wildlife, water, trees (groan!), people, whateverthef@ck you want (within reason!)
You may have already filmed something spectacular which this would be good for.

But it has to be filmed in ANY of the INTRA settings posted by me or adapted by yourselves.

So those interested private message (PM) me with a link to your mts & graded file (pro res HQ minimum) - the location, the lens, the extra settings, etc... etc...

Any titling will be put on by my editor following the details & specs you supply us. Therefore, everyone will get a credit on the footage so no problems :-)

And take great care getting perfect exposure for the subject required!

Cutoff date: 10th November 2011. All those willing to take part say 'Aye' below this thread heading.

Thanks,
Nick Driftwood

UPDATE: Here is the final ungraded showreel, the graded showreel will be up here on 17th December.

I bought a gh2 a couple of weeks ago and I am still in disbelief that I already have a camera that can shoot wonderful, wonderful images. This site helped me a lot in making the decision to purchase the cam. It is not widely available here and I was lucky some guy who bought it in the US wanted to get rid of it for some reason.

I used two lenses to shoot this video, a 20mm 1.7 and a 14mm 2.5 lumix lenses. I have to put the camera and the lenses for rent because I am an independent filmmaker and constantly thinking of ways to find funding for my work.

Here's the link -

GH2 @ 42 Mbps, Minolta 50mm f1.4, ETC-mode

I tried to get rid of the noise & compression artificats which were caused by ETC-mode. I exported whole video as TIFF image sequence, added noise reduction in Adobe Lightroom and imported image sequence back to Sony Vegas Pro. But you can still see some errors in video, aspecially at the black levels.

Would high bitrate Driftwood hack make those ugly compression artificats & noise go away?]]>

In my personal interpretation, I say the GH2 resolves a bit more detail. But they are very close. Both are true 1080p cams. Whoever was saying the GH2 could only resolve 600 lines was out of his mind. 600 lines is even below a 7D.

The EX3 in these shots looks like it has a bit more highlight control... but it was more likely caused by user error since I did this pretty quick and the EX3's monitor is much more faithful to the final image. I'm sure you can expose for better highlights, plus, there is much more shadow latitude that's not infested with noise like the EX3.

These are also still images, so in motion they look a bit different. IMO, the GH2's image in motion looks better than it's stills, and the EX3 actually looks worse due to the huge amounts of noise. When moving... the GH2 looks like motion still images, EX3 looks like noisy video.

That's all for now. ]]>

The gym is extremely dark so I used the 25mm F1.4 the entire time. Even the 45mm F1.8 wasn’t fast enough for the “cave” where most of the climbing took place. I also used +2 noise reduction even when I shot RAW. I am curious to see if that has any affect(positive or Negative) on RAW images after the firmware upgrade.

One thing I can say is that the new AF improvements are significant. I now use AFC for video always. The expanded touch screen for AF is also a huge bonus.

Oh yea this footage was basically unedited in terms of color and affects. The only thing I did was add in some sharpness because I didn’t have it set to do that in camera.

My first music video - GH2, 44 meg hack http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1693/my-first-music-video-gh2-44-meg-hack Fri, 09 Dec 2011 18:52:24 +0000 dean 1693@/talks/discussions
I shoot stills on a 5D Mk2 (I'm a photographer in Aus) but I recently wanted to shoot a music video, and after a lot of research, went for the GH2, and thought I'd share the pre-release video and give some details. The 5D was simply not an option after I did a few video tests. Moire etc, especially on instruments and shiny surfaces (something this video had in spades) was a 5D nightmare. The GH2 proved it can handle detailed images with hard highlighted edges with ease.

The video is here:

I used the first stable 44 meg patch at 1080p, 24fps. Edited on Final Cut and graded in Color.

Due to seeing more noise in the smooth setting in my testing, I went for the Cinema setting, to also bake in a little more of a look, before grading. This worked out ok, but in retrospect, I would have gone for Smooth. I had noise, sharpness, sat turned to -2.

I did want to try Resolve for grading, but as I went for a little bit of an overexposed look, the GH2's tendency to yellow up the roll off in highlights, I simply didn't have the knowledge to correct that in Resolve as easily as I could in Color. I also wanted to put in a softening layer, and that was easy in Color using an add function in the Color FX room.

Lenses used were the Panasonic 20mm F1.7 and the Olympus 45mm F1.8. Both were pretty impressive, especially the Olympus. To keep the aperture wide I used a Singh Ray variable ND. Interesting thing about this was the flare and reflections you get from highlights. See if you can spot a few floating hotspots, which is the dress and highlights in the BG simply hitting the flat optics of the ND.

Lights were 2 x 650w Arri knock off fresnel lights for the performances, and 2 banks of 3200k flouros for the bar, and the hotel room shots.

White balance for the Arri shots was 3800k to warm the shot up in camera. This was a mistake. Looked great when shooting, but was too warm when grading and meant it had to be pushed harder to cool it off lowering quality. A mixture of warming the white balance and Cinema profile gave me great headaches in grading. Never again. You live and learn.

White balance for the flouros was native at 3200k and worked better. ISO changed here and there but was mostly around 640iso.]]>
HD at 1 trillion frames per second http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1733/hd-at-1-trillion-frames-per-second Wed, 14 Dec 2011 09:16:56 +0000 lolo 1733@/talks/discussions yes, a light beam, moving at the speed of light on HD.

(YOUTUBE VIDEO DESCRIPTION)
We have built an imaging solution that allows us to visualize propagation of light at an effective rate of one trillion frames per second. Direct recording of light at such a frame rate with sufficient brightness is nearly impossible. We use an indirect 'stroboscopic' method that combines millions of repeated measurements by careful scanning in time and viewpoints.

The device has been developed by the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group in collaboration with Bawendi Lab in the Department of Chemistry at MIT. A laser pulse that lasts less than one trillionth of a second is used as a flash and the light returning from the scene is collected by a camera at a rate equivalent to roughly 1 trillion frames per second. However, due to very short exposure times (roughly one trillionth of a second) and a narrow field of view of the camera, the video is captured over several minutes by repeated and periodic sampling.
