Mega Flare: Album Promo (Remember your first shoot?) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3704/mega-flare-album-promo-remember-your-first-shoot Wed, 27 Jun 2012 09:25:32 +0000 leejb4 3704@/talks/discussions Shooting this video has made me realize three things.

  1. I need to invest in new lenses. I shot this entirely with the 14-42mm Lumix and it was way to dark for f=3.5... I had so much trouble grading because although the setting held up well with the darkness, it was still REALLY dark. I had ISO cranked up to 1250+ most of the time.

  2. Lighting is the most important part of filming. All of this was shot in the rain during a storm that we did not expect would roll in (which definitely gave a cool shot at the end). This had a big impact on the quality of the video.

  3. Practice! Every time I shoot something, I learn something new about the limitations of the camera, what shots look good and which ones don't, how to operate the camera in a different way, which lighting conditions work and which don't, different editing tricks and what not. So I guess I learned that even though this is all a hobby for me, it is just like any other sport or hobby in the fact that you have to practice and develop your abilities in order to create a final product that is satisfactory for you work with and for others to watch.

This is my first "Real" work and there are two versions of the video. The version I felt was most cinematic (minimal grading) and this version.

I sat with the artist and was grading and he kept asking for more "Color" to the shots and once I over saturated and cranked up the color correction tools he was extremely happy while I was left thinking..."This looks horrible." But...I guess I am supposed to create what he likes since it is technically "His" video.

Apologize for the long message, I just thought it would be nice to share my beginner experience with others so they can possibly learn something or for other to just reminisce about what it was like when they shot their very first video. Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Shooting this video has finally made me realize two things.

  1. I need to invest in new lenses. I shot this entirely with the 14-42mm Lumix and it was way to dark for f=3.5...

  2. Lighting is the most important part of filming. All of this was shot in the rain during a storm that we did not expect would roll in (definitely gave a cool shot at the end) and this had a big impact on the quality of the video.

I spent 9 years there, growing up as a teenager. Now in March 2012 I came back again after many years, unfortunately I had almost no time. Is it still the same as 20 years ago? No. But these moments, snapshots in time which seem to survive across the decades are still there.

Here are "my" moments.

I wish the egyptian people all the best during these difficult times. I hope the spirit of the Tahrir Square remains and does not die out.

Shot on Lumix GH1 and GH2 (both hacked), using the Voigtlaender 25mm f0.95, a Canon FL 55mm f1.2 and the 14-140mm kit lens.

Short Film set in 1951 South Korea http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3685/short-film-set-in-1951-south-korea Sun, 24 Jun 2012 11:21:43 +0000 thougts2uk 3685@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

I'm in pre-production on a low budget short film, set in 1951 in South Korea. It's a film set in the midst of the Korean War and features a British soldier, the only survivor from a recent ambush and a crazy Korean soldier suffering from Post Traumatic War Syndrome. Is he South Korean or North Korean...

I thought about shooting on the C300, the MKIII or the D800, but as I own a GH2 with Voigtlander 25mm, SLR magic 12mm and a Zeiss ZF 50mm 1.4 I thought it would be a great chance to use the GH2 with Driftwoods best settings either Sedna or Canis Majoris Night or another setting and not waste money I don't have.

Most scenes are set during the day with one night time scene over a camp fire.

This could be a really good test and a chance to see the GH2 in narrative again.

Does anyone have any suggestions to settings, lenses etc...

Also if someone could give me some advice on handling flare with lighting setups, especially since i have a canon fd and it seems to flare alot and veil flare.

48hr Guerilla Film Competition http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3623/48hr-guerilla-film-competition- Mon, 18 Jun 2012 22:34:44 +0000 Philldaagony 3623@/talks/discussions Yes, I know 48hr films can be horribly acted, horribly edited, and horribly shot, but it forces those involved to create something from scratch, which falls in line with one my personal filmmaking tenants "just shoot." Anyway, here is out entry into the 48hr Guerilla film festival. Follow the link and make sure to "like" the YouTube video. Also, huge props to those who helped get our "Got Milk" video voted in the top 5 of the got milk commercial competition earlier this year!

Sadly, the graded version of our film didn't export in time and we were forced to submit the ungraded/non-color corrected version of the film. I'm still quite proud of the results. We shot it on the GH2 and the 5DMark III. I'll post the graded version after the contest ends.

Shot a photographer...made my day : ) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3495/shot-a-photographer...made-my-day- Thu, 07 Jun 2012 13:59:01 +0000 pchristoph 3495@/talks/discussions
I was approached by a photographer here on Vancouver Island, Canada to make a short film about her and her business. This was a tough one for me as most photographers I know lean towards controlling scenes and directing action and so I was hesitant as my approach is very much hands off, documentary-style...but, she immediately said that she was giving me the reins to produce something that was honest and real about who she was. Erin told me later on that she was quite stressed after filming because she was used to seeing her results immediately and having to wait and leave it to me to edit her film was a new experience, but, she trusted me. I really valued that trust. Its something that you start building from your first client film, and it has introduced me to some great projects and people this year. So, having spent some time studying Erins photography style and the look of her photos I knew how I wanted to form the look of her film and I also knew how to mix her personality and her story into it to make what I feel is an honest film about a real photographer doing great things for people. I felt lucky to have been able to work with Erin and create the exact kind of photographer film we both wanted.

Can't say enough thanks to Vitaliy and the entire community here for its valued support, encouragement, and enhanced camera settings contributions and testing. It's great to be a small part of it by sharing some of my work done with the GH2. Cheers.

Filmed on GH2 over two days, Sedna A and Canis Majoris 'skin' settings from Driftwood. Steadycam Merlin (in some crazy wind), Kessler Pocket Dolly, manfrotto 561 monopod, s.takumar lenses (50,55,135), Tamron 17-50 non vc, Panasonic 14-140, Tota w/silver umbrella for interiors. LCW II vari-ND outside. Edited and graded in fcpx. Neat video applied to some clips. Music licensed with www.withetiquette.com

The 14-140mm can do indoor videos. I want the 35-100mm though. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3560/the-14-140mm-can-do-indoor-videos.-i-want-the-35-100mm-though. Tue, 12 Jun 2012 16:20:40 +0000 mpgxsvcd 3560@/talks/discussions I had the opportunity to shoot a climbing video in a well-lit climbing gym this weekend. Since the walls in this gym were much taller I decided to try the 14-140mm lens with its image stabilization instead of the 45mm F1.8 lens that I would normally use in this situation with a darker gym.

The IS definitely helps. However, there are several sections where even the excellent IS in the 14-140mm couldn’t handle the massive shakiness of an over jubilant father’s hands. The Image stabilization is really intended to reduce or eliminate the micro shakes that are inherit in the human muscles as they constantly correct our balance.

There simply isn’t enough travel in the stabilization system for it to account for large movements or swift panning. However, the upcoming 35-100mm lens is said to have a much better IS system. I hope to find out how much better it really is soon.

I also applied some color correction and sharpness that I don’t normally do. Let me know what you think about it. Does the contrast and color look off to you? Also is there too much sharpness?

The video was shot with the no adverse affects settings for stability with good quality. I absolutely could not afford a write error in this situation. The climbers only get 1 attempt at the route. If you miss the shot then you are just out of luck until the next year when they compete again.

If any of you are climbing fans then this video is from the Division 3 youth D sport climbing finals. I am not sure what rating the route was. Harder than I could do is about all I know.

A video of the Venus Transit you won't want to miss. http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3486/a-video-of-the-venus-transit-you-wont-want-to-miss. Wed, 06 Jun 2012 02:51:33 +0000 mpgxsvcd 3486@/talks/discussions Here is the video I took of the Venus Transit with my kids commenting on this once in a lifetime event.

This was filmed with Panasonic GH2 and the 14-140mm lens with a $40 Polaroid variable ND filter. It is not a great filter but it worked for what I wanted it to do.

There really are not that many cameras that can capture video, audio, and images simultaneously. In order to capture the entire event and the observers reaction you really need a camera like the GH2.

It would have been far better if I had used my telescope and the proper filters. However, I had my kids with me and it was just too much trouble to setup the big scope while taking care of them.

I simply set the GH2 on the tripod and hit record and this is what it captured.
