Flow Motion GH2 & incredible inexpensive Minolta lenses http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6021/flow-motion-gh2-incredible-inexpensive-minolta-lenses Tue, 05 Feb 2013 15:35:37 +0000 AaronDunleavy 6021@/talks/discussions Hi, this is a short student film which I directed and filmed using the Flow Motion GH2 hack with extremely inexpensive old Minolta Rokkor primes.

These lenses are so sharp, crystal clear and well built with smooth focusing so for an almost giveaway price you should really consider looking into them. A must buy if you are on a budget.

This was made in 3 weeks including devising a storyline and pre-production. All comments are appreciated and I will answer any questions you have.

Thanks, Aaron.

Yeah, fun! Also, I didn't edit and I do believe there's no CC or post work done to the footage. Awesome! And to top it off, I had 4 different kinds of lights going on in the room! Even better!!!

So this is just for the boobies pretty much, PG 13 boobies that is, not R...sorry guys. I'll leave the to RBD.

As usual, flip it to HD. Enjoy.

First gh3 piece...and thoughts http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6020/first-gh3-piece...and-thoughts Tue, 05 Feb 2013 13:37:59 +0000 kupchenpo 6020@/talks/discussions Just got my gh3 recently. Wanted to shoot a fun little piece before doing any payed gigs with it to work out the kinks in the workflow. Plus I had the best subject to shoot, my adorable 2 year old nephew who is endlessly facinated with my gear...particularly my slider.

Is it worth the big mark up as a video dedicated machine? Maybe. If you shoot a lot of stills as well....Yes! All in all, I'm loving this camera.

The things that are huge for me:
1. Cleaner at higher iso.
2. dials and buttons for everything.
3. touch lcd zoom for focus even with hdmi monitor (drove me crazy that I couldn't do this on the gh2, I was always unplugging to check critical focus).
4. internal battery lasts forever...no need for heavy external battery if you have a few.
5. Battery compartment is not covered by every qr plate ever made.
6. much improved lcd
7. I don't know if it's just my gh2 lens mount, but this seems sturdier. I don't need a rod mounted lens support for all my third party lenses when using a follow focus.
8. feels better in the hand.
9. Unhacked quality is great....I waste so much time worrying about which hack to use for which shoot on my gh2, and while I love the quality, it's nice to know I'm getting great quality on this without a bunch of research and time and bugs.
10. 1080p60 opens big doors creatively.

"Sick Boy" http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6015/sick-boy- Tue, 05 Feb 2013 02:12:21 +0000 BurnetRhoades 6015@/talks/discussions In June of 2010 my brother Tim and I shot our second independent feature length motion picture. Our first film, Xtracurricular (shot in June of 2001) was in that first handful of feature length narratives shot on the CineAlta F900 in 24P. This time our weapon of choice, or rather, weapon of availability was the Canon EOS 7D.

We chose to raise just enough to do a feature on the cheap, quickly, and the camera was actually a loaner from one of the exec. producers. A buddy of mine who's got a rather serious hobby as a stills photographer lent me his bag full of L-Series glass, as well as a neat little squishy lens from Lens Baby that I was determined to use somewhere in the film. Penny pinching aside, we still managed to get multiple SAG actors and have 3-meal catering for the entire shoot. We weren't going to put everyone through Subway every day like on our first picture.

...thanks to our connection with Fangoria magazine, through our third lead, B-movie legend and "scream queen" Debbie Rochon, we had sales reps sending us inquiries within hours (no b.s.) of the trailer being featured on the magazine's website. We ended up signing with Raven Banner, a Canadian company that impressed us with their enthusiasm for independent film, especially horror and the more "pulp" end of the cinema spectrum. It helped that they're also part of the Alamo Drafthouse's distribution channel in the Great White North.

It's now available in multiple markets around the world with several pending (UK, Australia/NZ). We're particularly proud that we're distributed in Canada by Anchor Bay via WB's home video division. All that sounds really impressive (eh, or not) but it's likely going to be another six months to a year before either Tim or I see a dime out of it, after paying off the market fees for the reps, the initial investment and then some deferrals.

Here are some clips showing off each of our leads. Skye McCole Bartusiak, who played Mel Gibson's youngest daughter in The Patriot and had a recurring role on 24 some season plays "Lucy", recently engaged and unsure of her career path. She steps in for a friend at a too-good-to-be-true babysitting job and would later regret it. Her fiancee, "Chris", is played by Marc Donato from Degrassi, The Final and, more recently, Bad Kids Go To Hell. Horror icon Debbie Rochon plays "Dr. Mrs. Gordon", mother of the titular sick boy...

Sick Boy marks my first time shooting anything feature length. My background is in visual effects and on our first feature that was what I brought to the table, in addition to a few b-roll shots that appear in the film. Once we were "in the can" Tim handled editorial in LA while I handled all but the audio finishing in Texas, having moved back here at the beginning of 2009.

We operated with mirrored arrays, trading project files via DropBox. Tim worked in FCP and I would import his EDLs via Automatic Duck into After Effects where I worked out the color grading as well as most of the visual effects. AE was also used for compositing of a handful of "serious" visual effects shots that were tackled with SESI's Houdini, my usual weapon of choice.

Anyhow, with so much interest in independent shooting I figured I'd post something about the project. Even though I've moved on to greener pastures with my GH2, and so, so wish I'd been able to shoot Sick Boy in anamorphic, you gotta make the best of what you have. Moving forward and actually making another film was the most important thing for us at the time. Hell, we were originally planning on shooting it with my Redrock Micro M2 and our DVX or HVX rental.

EDIT: LOL, going back and looking at the "making of" videos I was reminded that we shot this in June 2010, not June 2011. These things take time...

The Soska Sisters & Katherine Isabelle Q&A for 'American Mary' http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5846/the-soska-sisters-katherine-isabelle-qa-for-american-mary Sun, 20 Jan 2013 06:34:08 +0000 rrsduncan 5846@/talks/discussions Hi,

Just putting up a Q&A I shot the other day, it was mostly a test for a new method of sound recording, and to see what I need to change to get a quick and easy setup for Q&A's in future so I know it's a little rough. So I'm not sure 'Showcase' is quite correct, but I thought people might want to see the interview.

They were quite the pair and 'American Mary' was great.

Sadly youtube has mangled it a bit but it's too big to fit on Vimeo, even though the two GH2's had the same WB matching the different colour rendition on the lenses (and the fact that the GFT is incredibly dark) was tricky! Will know next time.

Anyhoo, hope you enjoy it.

This was our fun winter project, its in german (no subs), but one can get the meaning anyways I guess. ;-)

Technical details

Camera:

  • GH3 (unhacked since no hacks available itm)

Lenses:

  • 12mm 1.6 SLR Magic (should not have passed quality control at SLR Magic as you might see)
  • 25mm 0.95 Nokton
  • 35mm 1.4 Samyang
  • 40mm 1.8 Hexanon
  • 50mm 1.7 Pentax K
  • 85mm 1.4 Samyang (what a nice portrait lens for this money!)

Post:

  • Premiere
  • After Effects
  • bunch of plugins
  • bunch of people
  • a little time

Additonal Comments: The GH3 is a nice little cam and dids its job very well. I did not really recognize the difference in latitude, but had no direct comparision anyways. Moire did hit us once pretty hard. Until its hacked I prefer GH2 since 72 Mbit is just not enough for Intra.

Any kind of feedback is very welcome.

(edit: Markup preview and final view if completly different!)
