Multi Camera shoot with GH5 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17428/multi-camera-shoot-with-gh5 Sun, 30 Jul 2017 10:21:18 +0000 aae991 17428@/talks/discussions I've got an upcoming corporate project where I might be using three GH5 setups. Two of them will be shooting video while the third will be shooting high speed 6K photo mode (for capturing a fast event). Is there a way to easily start and stop the two video GH5 setups remotely and simultaneously? This would be from 20-30 feet away from the cameras. Even better, I'd love to do this with all three setups, each with their own parameters dialed in ahead of each event.

Is a network setup possible? Can it be done with extended wired remotes?

Thanks for any feedback on this.

The raw file which i converted with lightroom and silkypix(the official panasonic raw developer) have hundreds of red green white dots mostly in the shadows area...to make it a bit clear i brought up the exposure by one stop... here are the 2 images... i don't know if i have a faulty camera,if someone could replicate a long exposure shot it would be really appreciated....thanxx

When taking pictures on filter mode ("miniuature","old days" etc) I can't find the way to import the pics with the effect to my mac. Previosly I did find the pictures when inserting the sd card directly in my mac laptop, but now the pics (in RAW format) they look without the filter itself. Is the right file but seems that the effect is lost in between? I know it worked fine when I bought the camera so I suspect is a software upgrade thing? Thanks

Sure enough in the heat of the moment I removed the battery before turning it off and sure enough now the camera is pretty much a brick.

Anyone know of a fix for this besides sending it to Panasonic and paying a arm and leg to get it fixed?

There is no factory reset for the os would trying to download previous firmware maybe fix it?

Can it damage my camera or it is not so heavy weight to brake it?

A comparison of 4K to 1080p downscaling with GH4 / Ninja Star http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12611/a-comparison-of-4k-to-1080p-downscaling-with-gh4-ninja-star Sun, 15 Mar 2015 14:48:48 +0000 StudioDCCreative 12611@/talks/discussions So, I've just shot a quick test using my GH4 and a Ninja Star. The test is to check the differences between the internal HDMI-based 4K downscale and the 4K -> 1080p downscale using the 4:2:0 8-bit H264 as a source.

The images can be downloaded in full resolution here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/e6o06zoowk7z5fh/GH4%20Test%20Images.zip?dl=0

I've created some uncompressed side-by-side previews but they seem to be too big for the forum, so I won't upload them here. Using JPG defeats the purpose of this comparison, as it adds it's own artifacts, so I won't use it either. If there's a way for me to post ~1MB TIFF files so you can see them faster, let me know.

Images are from the GH4 (set to a gently tweaked CineV, 4K 100M 24p - really 23.98, 180 degree shutter, Sigma 18-35 at f/2.8 on a Speedbooster at ISO 400, auto white balance, tungsten lighting).

They were captured to 1080p using the following workflows:

Clip 1: Recorded in GH4 (4:2:0 8-bit H.264 4K) then downscaled in Red Giant Bulletproof to 1080p ProRes 422HQ. Clip 2: Recorded in GH4 (4:2:0 8-bit H.264 4K) then downscaled in FCPX by adding to a 1080p timeline. Clip 3: GH4 HDMI out (4:2:2 8-bit) to Atomos Ninja Star (ProRes 422HQ) Clip 4: GH4 HDMI out (4:2:2 10-bit) to Atomos Ninja Star (ProRes 422HQ)

All clips were then placed in an FCPX timeline (Clip 2 was placed as a 4K file), then a frame was exported as a TIFF uncompressed file at full 1080p resolution. No effects, grading, or anything else was applied.

I tried to choose a subject (ColorChecker Passport and tomato, lit just off-axis with a side light accent) that would both provide some sharp edges as well as gentle gradients, and the green/red of the tomato should hopefully accentuate any actual chroma sub-sampling issues that exist. Camera was on a beanbag so please excuse any pixel-level misregistration, I don't have my tripod handy right now.

I hope this helps someone.

My very bitter GH5 experience & how Panasonic treats customers http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17142/my-very-bitter-gh5-experience-how-panasonic-treats-customers Tue, 13 Jun 2017 21:33:40 +0000 yiannis_zach 17142@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

I'd like to share here, in a separate-dedicated post (I have a serious reason for this), my very bitter experience with Panasonic & my GH5:

I have been a faithful Panasonic user since the GH2 camera (we, most of us here had one, especially after @driftwood's hack) and also have had since, at least the following Panasonic camera-models: GH3, GH4, now the (defected in my case) GH5, but also the G7, G80, GM1 and just a week ago I received my GX80. I have also owned most of the Panasonic-Lumix lenses.

I placed my pre-order for the GH5 on 19/01/2017 via CVP.com (UK dealer) and although the final receipt of purchase was made by the CVP company on the 24/03/2017, when I applied for the 5 year-warranty Panasonic offered to clients that pre-ordered the GH5, in the warranty confirmation I received from Panasonic-UK, my warranty counting from the pre-order’s date & not from the date that the final receipt was made, so actually Panasonic-UK short changed (stole) the customer over 2 MONTHS on the warranty period.

I've never contacted Panasonic for this last matter, but the warranty should/has to start from final receipt of goods...

Now: The camera I received was defective, having the following problem described below -as in my note to Panasonic-FR service centre where

I sent the camera for repair, on the 09/05/2017:

“Very often, when I switch-on the camera, both the EFV and the monitor are going completely black. The camera does takes pics/videos while all is black (but I’m not able to see what I shoot, through the EVF or/and the monitor). I have to switch-Off the camera and then ON again, in order for the camera to start working properly… And when I do so, the camera needs at least 3-4 seconds to get Switched-Off, which means that if on a job (wedding or other) I need immediate response from the camera, I simply don’t get it. Same applies after "Sleep-Mode": I press the Shutter-Button in order to “wake-up” the camera so to shoot something important that may happening in-front-of me, but everything is completely black, so I’m losing those important moments I wished to shot… Both the above cases are happening 1 out of 3-4 times I try to work with the camera, so you may not be able to notice this immediately, but after some tries. I’ve tried to correct this by using the “Reset” in camera’s settings, I was also hoping that this may be fixed by the latest firmware, but nothing… As you understand, this way the camera is completely useless, especially for serious use."

I contacted CVP, the guys there told me to send the camera to them, but as I Live in France, I said "let me contact Panasonic-FR too before I'll ship to you".

When I first contacted -on the 09/05/2017- Panasonic-FR, I explained them in every detail the issue that the camera has and made them clear that the product was purchased from a UK store. As of course it is covered also by the European warranty, they told me that I had to send it to their service centre, named "Nikken Tecno France" which I did. I immediately contacted this last company/service-centre and the same day (09/05/2017) the camera was shipped to them.

They received it on the 12/05/2017.

I got the camera back from "Nikken Tecno France" on the 26/05/2017, & after they had changed (as they describe it in their invoice) the "Printed Circuit Board", but, with great surprise, I discovered that the camera not only had the same exact issue as before, but it was also scratched on the outer body (a tiny scratch up and right, close to the shutter button), and also their "repair" had affected the performance of the camera, more specifically the ISO performance, like for example shooting in any "Picture-Profile" at ISO-3200 was like shooting the same camera before with ISO-25800... Full of ugly noise... Even my GH4 at ISO-3200 was way cleaner at this same ISO.

Here to mention that I sent to "Nikken Tecno France" a camera with V-LOG installed (an extra purchase, cost of €106), but I received a camera without V-LOG, so new contact with Panasonic-France (only for the V-LOG as the old key-code can't be installed twice), the same day I received it from the "repair" (26/05/2017, I keep all emails) before discovering the new problems the camera had after I received it back. 3 weeks since that the V-LOG key-code asked and I've never received anything back from them... But even if they'll do send me one is now useless, you'll see below why.

Back to the main issues: I contacted "Nikken Tecno France", they said to send it back, so to pay again from my own pocket the new postage expenses, I refused that they will touch my camera again, then I called back Panasonic-FR, I explained them all the above issues (including that the camera received scratched from their repair service) and the person on the phone from Panasonic-FR clients service, after she spoke with a manager while I was waiting on my phone-call, she told me that they were going to contact CVP, in order to arrange a camera replacement with a brand new one. This, on the 31/05/2017...

I contacted CVP this same day to inform them about the situation and what Panasonic-FR told me, and they advised me (so to shorten the

time as they -wisely- said) to send my camera and everything I received with my purchase, back to them. And so I did.

The camera left my hands on the 31/05/2017 and received by "CVP Pro-Repairs team" department the 06/06/2017 (and it's been there since)...

As I had no news from Panasonic's side after they told me for a replacement on the 31/05/2017, I contacted again the French department and spoke once again with them (07/06/2017), and they told me (for first time!!) that Panasonic-UK is the only responsible for my case... I reminded to them our last conversation from the 31/05/2017 when they told that the camera will be replaced, & they said “give us some time to speak with manager” and after some minutes I received an email:

“We kindly ask you to contact the UK team that is able to guide you in finding the authorized service centre for your GH5 product” (!!!) ...

So, "from Annas to Kaiafas", like I'm Panasonic's tennis-ball...

This same day, immediately, I called Panasonic-UK for first time and spoke with someone named John. I was calling from France to UK, so extra money spent on phone calls... I had to start from the very beginning, explaining everything in every little detail and at the end, John told me that for this "just recently released brand new product", ONLY Panasonic-UK and its special-dedicated service-centre was the one and only that the camera had to be sent from the very beginning and that Panasonic-FR did a huge mistake not to ask me from the very beginning to contact the UK department and only... He concluded his speech that now Panasonic-FR had to give me the solution to their mistake...

Back again to Panasonic-FR (all this, the Wednesday 07/06/2017), new call to them, new apologies from their side, new discussions between personnel & manager, so she finally said "Please give us 2-3 days, maybe Friday you'll have my news"...

Until today, 14/06/2017, 36 days after I first sent my GH5 for repair & I still don't have my camera in my hands. 36 full days, without a product which costs: €2000 + €106 the V-LOG + €50 for 2 shipments + many phone calls cost + time lost (which means non-working time = losing income)...

Yesterday I called once again both Panasonic-FR & Panasonic-UK, they both saying "your case is under review"... They also both mentioned that CVP is responsible that I don't have a replacement in my hands sent by them for the period my own camera is at them... New "tennis game" here again...

In less than 2 weeks from today, I fly to Greece where I'll stay 5 weeks & have to use my camera & no-one has ANY IDEA when a solution will be given... If not a camera will be shipped to me within a week from now, I'm just f@cked up... & I'll be able again to receive a camera (if they'll have decide till then) after the 3 of August, which means I'll be for over 3 months without my tool that I have fully paid to them...

Any help-suggestion will be much appreciated. A letter sent to all of them (Pana UK & FR + to CVP) yesterday & I really don't know what else to do. To make a video & publish it online & then share it to any forum related to Pana? Talk with a lawyer? I don't really know...

@Vitaliy_Kiselev? or even Nick @driftwood that you're a Pana boy now, any help?

Thanks everyone for your time.

Is V-log identical in both the GH4 and GH5? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17140/is-v-log-identical-in-both-the-gh4-and-gh5 Tue, 13 Jun 2017 10:57:17 +0000 Brian_Siano 17140@/talks/discussions I can't determine if this has been asked before, so I apologize for any duplication. But is the V-log implementation identical between these cameras?

For example, if I were to shot the same scene with the two cameras, both using V-log and otherwise identical settings, would the resulting video be more or less the same?

Could I use the same LUTs on the footage? Or does GH5 V-log footage require different LUTs than those of the GH4?

GH5 DIY Power Solution development http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16830/gh5-diy-power-solution-development Sat, 29 Apr 2017 22:15:35 +0000 nahlene 16830@/talks/discussions Dear fellows @ Personal View,

New registered user but frequent visitor here. My name is Chenxing and I am based in Toronto, Canada. I run a small documentary and commercial production house ( our website). 1 month ago We've got an early shipping of the GH5 and tested in field. Turns out the battery performance is not as good as i hoped (4k with IBIS only last a bit more than 1 hour 20 mins in real world usage.). So 1 month later, now I am in the process of co-designing an enhanced battery grip specifically for GH5 that will be able to at least triple GH5 4k running time, AND optionally output power for more devices.

I am now working with a reputed camera power supply workshop in Beijing, China. We are half-way in the prototype making and expected to have this thing go on KICKSTARTER by the end of May and start shipping around early August.

As you can see in the pictures below, at this time we have finished the 1st prototype with Li-polymer built-in battery, which currently supplies 5500mAh (a standard Panasonic DMW-BLF19 supplies 1860mAh), our not-so-scientific first test suggests that the GH5 camera will continuous run around 9 hours with the grip (4k 422 10bit, Leica 12-60 f2.8-4, on tripod, IBIS abled but it's slacking on tripod.)

image

But here's the fun part, in the Prototype ii, i am suggesting to implement additional power outputs on the grip. So that the grip will be able to supply 7.4 power to gh5 via dummy battery while simultaneously supply:

  • DC 12v (emergency use for most LEDs and some hungrier devices such as BMDCC and BMMCC)
  • DC 7.4v (most monitors, recorders, taredek wireless devices can be powered by 7.4v power)
  • 5v USB (emergency charging for most smartphones, most Sony α series, and some wierdo small LEDs)

I've got this idea to carry less battery and most importantly, improve the ergonomic of the whole rig (decrease the weight on the top). Essentially it's got most of benefit of using v-mount battery without the weight, size, cost and troubles.

But since this would cost a bit in R&D and implementation. I'd like to ask some questions to help us better make decisions. You opinion is deeply appreciated:

  1. Do you think you would buy this battery grip with power output? If so, what do you mostly shoot?
  2. Do you think the 3 power output plan meets your need? If it's too much or not enough let me know.
  3. Is there any other additional function you really want to add to this battery grip?
  4. What is your price range perception for this product.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION.

If this product could achieve reasonably well reception we will use the income to design a generic battery grip for all dslr and mirrorless video cameras that can also be used partially as a cheeseplate/halfcage (an optimized and more practical competition to Atomos PowerStation sort of...).

Strange thing is that I find that online everyone seems to 'buy first' - 'return later'. In Australia I don't think we have such amazing return policies.

I remember when I purchased a product from B&H (In the physical B&H shop) the sales assistant told me to use the product- and return it if I didn't like it for 'any reason'.

GH5 False Color LUT http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16899/gh5-false-color-lut Wed, 10 May 2017 10:17:42 +0000 alcomposer 16899@/talks/discussions I found this false color LUT online: https://luts.iwltbap.com/false-color-lut/

To get your head around exposing for VLog_L this document was a life saver for me:

http://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/dvx4k/pdf/ag-dvx200_tech_brief_vol6_en.pdf

That document mentions the DVX200 but as that also uses VLog-L I see no reason to not use it. Also the DVX200 has the similar limited dynamic range of the GH5 (not being a Varimac LT etc).

Summery from document:

VLOG-L gives the widest dynamic range and the most post-production exibility from a DVX200. If your project can afford the time to conduct the proper post-processing required, VLOG-L gives you the broadest canvas on which to paint your images. Exposing properly for VLOG-L is the key to getting the best results; aim to expose an 18% gray card at about 42 IRE, keep your Caucasian skin highlights to below 55 IRE, and set your Zebra 2 to 75 IRE to keep from clipping highlights.

Take home notes

  • Caucasian skin set Zebras to 55 IRE
  • Set top end Zebras to 75 IRE
  • Set 18% grey card to 42 IRE (not usable in GH5 as we can't set Zebras that low in VLog-L)

Here is an image of my Keyboard with FC in VLog-L & Zebras as 55IRE:

image

One really cool thing about custom LUTs on the GH5 is that once you install them they are saved onto the camera. So you can have a spare small SD card with as many LUTs as you want- then install them as you see fit. The camera will remember the last installed LUT's. Currently there is space for 4 custom LUT's on the GH5.

image

EDIT: Just noticed my shutter is 240 degrees, I assure everyone that I normally use a 180, this was simply a pick up and play moment. Also normally my battery is fully charged. :-)

GH5 with Sigma 4.5mm Circular Fisheye http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16951/gh5-with-sigma-4.5mm-circular-fisheye Wed, 17 May 2017 02:46:44 +0000 alcomposer 16951@/talks/discussions Just tested the GH5 with Sigma 4.5mm Circular Fisheye Lens.

In Anamorphic mode & 6k Photovideo mode the full Circular Fisheye image is perfectly framed. This is the highest resolution FullDome image we can capture on a low cost system - before using a Blackmagic, Kinefinity or RED camera solution.

I had used the GH4 with the same lens- and this needed a speed booster to achieve the same result.

Could be interesting for Fulldome Planetarium Capture! Especially once Panasonic update Anamorphic mode to high quality. Would be nice if 6k Photovideo mode was also updated to higher quality as well- and 4:2:2.

I am also interested in testing Kinefinity with the Yashuhara Madoka on a Kinefinity. Which should allow similar resolution capture. http://www.yasuhara.co.jp/madoka/index-e.html

Any chance? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16633/panasonic-af-200-at-nab-2017-any-chance- Fri, 24 Mar 2017 16:20:23 +0000 azza_act 16633@/talks/discussions The GH5 looks fantastic and I'm sure I'll get one but I wish Panasonic would upgrade the AF 100 (or DVX 2000 with interchangeable lens option and GH5 sensor). I have most of the essential M4/3 lenses (including all of the voigtlanders) so going the Sony/BM/Canon route is out of the question. Love to have built ND, knobs and dials, XLR input etc. Any chance Panasonic has a surprise at NAB? $5000 - $6000 AF 200. Or should I shut up and buy the GH5 :)

Why Panasonic exposure so simple and limited? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15142/why-panasonic-exposure-so-simple-and-limited Sat, 28 May 2016 12:33:19 +0000 Vesku 15142@/talks/discussions GH3, GH4 and other high end/professional Panasonic cameras has severe limitation in video exposure options and features. Many pocket cameras and cell phones has more versatile exposure. Why Panasonic has decided to leave many basic exposure tools out of the tool box? Lets look the GH4:

-not showing basic exposure information (aperture, shutter and iso).

-no auto iso in M with EV comp although it has a dedicated EV comp button. In fact I can not find any other reasonable use for that button than EV comp with auto iso in M.

-no iso limit like in photo modes.

-AE lock button works crippled.

-full auto uses very high shutter speeds.

-no shutter speed limit.

-all special features like long shutter speeds or slow motion works only after everything (AE+AF) is in manual.

-all Panasonic objectives has stepping aperture.

It cant be a lack of knowledge. Panasonic has limited exposure options in purpose. But why?

Odd Issue with GH4 Timelapse Recording http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16841/odd-issue-with-gh4-timelapse-recording Mon, 01 May 2017 11:12:58 +0000 MkeysHughes 16841@/talks/discussions The past couple of timelapses I have shot using the internal intervalometer on my GH4 have switched aspect ratios back and forth, image after image, for about 30 images and then reverts to the correct 4K aspect ratio. It starts normal and ends normal, but for a span in the middle it ruins the consistency. I haven't been able to find any other reports of this problem, so I'm interested if anyone does have any experience with it.

Thanks

Gh4 on FCP7 File size problems http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16751/gh4-on-fcp7-file-size-problems Sat, 15 Apr 2017 12:57:18 +0000 Nic 16751@/talks/discussions Hi,

I just bought a GH4 and I am trying to get it to work with my FCP 7, but is does not really work well yet. I prefer to film in FHD 100Mbps 25P, and I need to film longer than 30 min..The camera is bought in US and does film continuously more than 30, but it chops up the files in small pieces of 4.27GB (6.40 min). There are 2 problems in this: 1) When importing in FCP7 it imports well, but when put on the timeline, "General Error" appears and it will not play it. I have tried to convert to ProRess HQ, and this plays well, but a second problem appears: 2)every 6:40 min I lack 2 frames both audio and video, and this is really not what I need, I need a continuos file for more than 6.40 min...

What can I do?

Connecting Windows 10 to Lumix camera issues http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16574/connecting-windows-10-to-lumix-camera-issues Fri, 10 Mar 2017 05:48:05 +0000 Rambalac 16574@/talks/discussions Hi,

Does anybody have any problem with connecting Windows 10 laptop to GH4 or GH3 directly with WiFi? I tried setup cameras as access point and connect to them as usual access point but Windows is in connecting state infinitely. I tried to Add Device and connect from cameras via WiFi direct but after I select laptop in camera nothing happens

I have no any problem connecting camera in both ways using Android device.

And if you know how connect camera via WiFi direct in UWP C# it would be a miracle.
