Focus Techniques with Panasonic Cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16777/focus-techniques-with-panasonic-cameras Thu, 20 Apr 2017 08:38:24 +0000 Scot 16777@/talks/discussions There has been a lot of talk about Panasonic AF especially with the release of the GH5. Have to admit I'm disappointed in Video AFC myself. So here is my AFC tip on my G85 and I think this applies to most recent Panasonic releases including GH5. I have set the 1/2 press shutter button to stop auto focusing. This way when I have focus and don't feel it will be changing for awhile 1/2 press the shutter and lock focus no more unintentional in and outs. The downside is when I let it go it is sometimes hesitant to refocus. I get around this by setting the Fn1 on my G85 to AFL Lock which forces it to focus. I use to rely on the back button but this puts focus control all in range of the index finger and for me less chance of disrupting the camera while motivating focus off or on. I can also use the touch focus on the back screen which refocuses when you drag the focus box to a new location which also works great paired with the 1/2 press shutter focus lock. In this way if I want to risk using AFC I can at any moment. Hope that helps and would love to hear anyone elses tips on the AFC issue.

Wishes for the GH6 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17968/wishes-for-the-gh6 Thu, 12 Oct 2017 00:05:54 +0000 AKED 17968@/talks/discussions Everybody is working and talking about the 2.0 and now 2.1 firmware update for the GH5.

But for sure the Panasonic engeneers are alreday working on the GH6. For Panasonic claims and has prooven, that they listen to the customers, let us tell them early in the process of the development, what features we would like to see in the GH6, that can not be implemented in the GH5 through firmware update.

Let me start with a wish for a 2nd screen:

I think it is great to have the controls like waveform, histogram, sound etc. to have all the settings in sight, but as we all know, they take up a lot of space and cover up the video picture on the screen.

So my idea is, to have a second screen on the body where the screen normally rests. So that, when the normal, video screen, is flipped in, they face each other.

I would call it a "service screen", where you can have and see all the helping tools without covering the screen with the picture. All other settings like aputure, ss, ISO etc could also be shown and maybe one can also change the settings of the camera on that screeen. As you like. One should be able to assign, what you want to see on that screen.

I would make it a touch screen as well, so that the camera would have a double touch-screen, so the you can move things to the video screen if you need it, for example when you do overhead work and can not see the service screen but need the wave or sound controls. Once you are back in normal use, you can push them out of the way to the service screen again. If you do not need it, you could switch it off to save battery.

Nowadays, screens are so thin, that I doubt that it would make the camera bigger.

I think this would be a great help to have all the controls in sight, without them covering the main video screen.

Also, NO other Mirrorless or DSLR camera has that feature which would really give Panasonic another advantage over his competitors.

One could also think about transmitting the information of the service screen maybe via bluetooth to a mobile device, so one can have it in sight if a look on the camera is difficult or a 2nd person can have a look or even adjust the settings, while the camera man takes care of the framing.

What do you think about this? Would that make sense and help?

Possible Panasonic Production flaw in G7 cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18899/possible-panasonic-production-flaw-in-g7-cameras Wed, 31 Jan 2018 15:47:00 +0000 DrDave 18899@/talks/discussions I have quite a few G7 cameras. A few of these intermittently exhibit some strange behavior where if you press on the mode dial, or in several spots on the back of the camera (where the LCD stores) the mode and the screen jump around rapidly. Popping the back off (easy, but don't do it if you don't know what you are doing) reveals some interesting things. In one corner, and I think this is possibly the problem, there's some small wires that don't quite fit into the clip. They are very thin, so push them into the clip very carefully. Also, be very careful of the ribbon cables.
All of my cameras work perfectly now. After taking the back off, I gently flexed the circuit board towards the lens a few time, reseated the wires in the corner, made sure all the ribbons were in place and fully in their clips, and blew some compressed air into mode dial switch. Not sure which of these fixed the problem, but I suspect it is the wires because some of my cameras have some extra shielding there with a different clip and some do not.
If you do need to pop the back off, make sure to remove the screw in the battery bay and also make sure to remove four screws in the viewfinder. You need to slide off the rubber seal. Again, disassemble only if really needed at your own risk.
When you open the back, you can see that the whole back is a metal heat sink, with a small foam pad in the middle that sits on the hot chip. Inspect that foam as I think it dries out over time if you plan to keep the camera.
To test the (assembled) camera, lightly press the upper right corner of the back where the top of the LCD would go after flipping it out. Try it both in standby and record mode. If nothing happens, leave it be. If under warranty, I recommend factory service over trying to fix it. I suspect there's a design problem that affects some of the cameras.

GH5 Focus Transition things to come http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16989/gh5-focus-transition-things-to-come Tue, 23 May 2017 05:34:09 +0000 alcomposer 16989@/talks/discussions With the addition of GH5 Focus transition, (a feature borrowed from the AG-DVX200) this has got me thinking:

  • Focus Transition really only works well for lenses that don't breath- or breath minimally.

  • Possibly Panasonic may realise that there is a market for Video Centric MFT lenses

  • Panasonic will have to come out with more Video Centric glass to really utilise this feature. Also ParFocal Zooms would be nice!

  • If Panasonic created a USB-C follow focus protocol (with accompanying hardware- or allowed other companies to make) it would make me much more interested in native Panasonic glass.

  • If Panasonic are 'not' interested in making more Video Centric MFT glass then why put this feature into the GH5 at all? I'm sure it was not simple to code this into the firmware of 'fly-by-wire' lenses.

GH5 - HLG workflow & direct rendering HLG to HDR display ??? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18383/gh5-hlg-workflow-direct-rendering-hlg-to-hdr-display- Sun, 03 Dec 2017 19:54:41 +0000 c3hammer 18383@/talks/discussions Been struggling to find a way to render unedited HLG clips on PC using MPC-HC from a GTX1050x to a Sony XBR43x800D via HDMI 2.0b. It plays back perfectly smooth, but in the flat recorded look. Trying to find a renderer and or shader that will expand the image to proper HDR on my monitor.

Secondarily, looking to see if Resolve 14 Studio, or Edius 9 is the better software for working with this type of HLG and HEVC 6k footage. I've been using Movie Studio 14 and Vegas Pro 14, but it won't work with anything larger than 4K and I need to move on.

Suggestions appreciated. A conversation on the nuances of this new world of HDR would be beneficial for all of us I suppose as well.

Cheers, Pete

GH2 stuck mechanical shutter http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17122/gh2-stuck-mechanical-shutter Fri, 09 Jun 2017 16:42:08 +0000 luxis 17122@/talks/discussions Hi all, its been a while I have posted anything. After close to good 6 years my GH2 has its first major issue. The shutter got stuck in closed position taking a photo.

I got the "Please turn camera off and then on again" message. Doing so did not solve the issue. When i do this I hear a slight sound and can see the shutter trying to move slightly but remains like in the first photo.

In the second photo - I tried to manually open it and I saw that another part is stuck behind the outer blades.

My questions: is there a way to find out if its a hardware or software failure. Is it something that can be fixed DIY style or is the camera a paper clip? Does anybody has a official Panasonic Repair Guide/pdf by chance?

I have looked around for a replacement shutter unit (in case it is a hardware failure) and its not exactly easy finding one (comparing to canons and nikons or even gf2/3 which are abundant and cheap etc). Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated!

Manual lenses, exposure compensation, Auto ISO and Panasonic G Cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18311/manual-lenses-exposure-compensation-auto-iso-and-panasonic-g-cameras Thu, 23 Nov 2017 10:30:33 +0000 CNek 18311@/talks/discussions Hi there, I know it's kind of an old issue, but maybe some of you have found a workaround this.

I use G6 / GX80(85) / GH2 and all three works fine with :

  • Shutter Priority Mode
  • Auto ISO.
  • Exposure Compensation above or under the mid-point.
  • Electronically detected lenses (aperture settable by the body).

BUT.

I just can't change the ExpComp while using a Manual Lens. It's just staying to zéro.

It works but only in Program or Aperture Priority mode, the cameras changes both Auto ISO and/or Shutter Speed (not Aperture as it is only changeable on the lens barrel, not electronically).

I've noted that in P or A mode the Camera tries to avoid flickering. However during lighting transitions or in extreme settings the Shutter Speed seems to be used as a last resort for exposure compensation, producing momentary flickering. It's just a guess though, not quit sure.

As I have to protect my highlights, I'm used to set ExpComp to -2/3, especially in case of a high contrast and frequent changing scene (live events).

If anyone have a clue to address this I will be greatly thankful.

Cheers !

Does 30 or 60 fps with 1/50 shutter speed with 50 Hz lighting makes sense ? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18247/does-30-or-60-fps-with-150-shutter-speed-with-50-hz-lighting-makes-sense- Thu, 16 Nov 2017 04:36:09 +0000 CNek 18247@/talks/discussions Hi guys, I'm a using PAL GX80 (GX85) and G6 in service mode in order to use more FPS for slow motion recording but one thing isn't clear at all for me. Is there any problem, like stuttering, by using these in 30 or 60 fps mode with a 1/50 or 1/100 shutter speed for syncing with artificial EU lighting (50 Hertz). I assume people commonly use 25/50 fps with 50 Hz with artificial european lighting normally but am I suppose to see some artefacts by preferring 30 or 60 fps ? Also I prefer 30 or 60 fps because modern LCD monitors and TV are all synchronized at 60 Hz, even in europe. Thanks for your insights.

Panasonic announced the release of a much anticipated firmware update Ver.2.2 for the award winning LUMIX GH4. This new firmware enables two new features, most notably the ability to record anamorphic video content.

Anamorphic lenses are used to create a cinemascope aspect such as 2.39:1 or 2.35:1. Panasonic discovered that cinematographers had been experimenting with the 4K PHOTO mode 4:3 aspect ratio in the LUMIX GH4 and vintage anamorphic cine lenses to achieve the classic Hollywood look of anamorphic film capture. Unlike complex digital post processing needed to achieve the look, many of the background distortion and light flare effects that became so popular with anamorphic film capture can now be achieved optically in the LUMIX GH4.

Thanks in part to its Micro Four Thirds format and 4K recording ability, firmware Ver.2.2 for the LUMIX GH4 enables an Anamorphic (4:3) Mode capable of recording video in 3328 x 2496 pixel (equivalent to approx. 8.3-megapixel) resolution at a frame rate of either 23.98, 24, 25 or 29.97 fps. With an anamorphic lens such as 2x1 you can capture and un-squeeze a 3356x2496 image in post-production. In addition, 4:2:2 / 10 bit HDMI output is also available2.

A further enhancement of the new firmware is the addition of a very high shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec. when using its electronic shutter mode.
