For example, if they were shooting two people on a greenscreen soundstage, they could superimpose the background footage to help line the shot up correctly.

Does anyone know which recorder/monitors on the market can do something like this? (Say, play two video streams superimposed over each other? Or load in a graphics file to superimpose?

Zacuto EVF Pro viewfinder review http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/305/zacuto-evf-pro-viewfinder-review Wed, 29 Jun 2011 08:14:28 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 305@/talks/discussions The Zacuto EVF is a high-resolution 3.0" monitor that offers the flexibility of mounting virtually anywhere. and is fully compatible with their line of Z-Finder's (Jr. and Pro). The Zacuto EVF was designed for dual-purpose use. With a Z-Finder attached it becomes a high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) and without it's a 3.2" monitor that can be positioned where you need it. The EVF was designed to accept Canon LP-E6 Li-ion batteries making it compatible with the Canon 5D Mark II, 1D Mark IV, and 7D, and Zacuto figured out a way to make the battery last what feels like a lifetime. During the first wedding the EVF was left on during the entire 65 minute ceremony and again on a 4 hour beach shoot a few days later and the battery gauge is still showing 3 out of 4 bars. Incredible. It's a pleasure not to feel as if you need to turn it off after each pause in the action in order to conserve battery power.

On paper the resolution of the Zacuto EVF (800x480 resolution, 384,000 pixels) might seem inferior to the DSLR's 3.0" display which on some models like the 5DMKII, 7D, etc. is billed as having 921,600 dots. What many don't realize is that it takes 3 dots (Red, Green, and Blue) to make up one pixel so Canon's 920k dots equals a resolution of 640x480. Zacuto's EVF with its 800x480 display offers 20% higher resolution than the screens found in video-enabled DSLR's. This is one of the reasons it is easier to judge focus with the Zacuto EVF, even without using the built-in focusing aids, than it is using the camera's own LCD. The slightly larger 3.2" diagonal screen is also a true 16:9 monitor so you'll see everything in the frame and the EVF uses IPS panel technology and a tighter dot pitch (spacing between pixels) to make this an overall great monitor.
...
Despite the smaller size of the Zacuto EVF, when used with the Zacuto Z-Finder Loupe you have the best of both worlds. A big view through the lens and one that can adjust to any shooting situation. At another wedding this past weekend I attached the EVF to an articulating arm which allowed me to keep the screen in front of me while the camera was positioned about a foot above eye level on a tripod. As I tracked the Ceremonial Walk during the [Greek] Ceremony I was able to keep the subjects framed and in focus, despite the shallow depth-of-field. During the reception I made use of the EVF without the loupe for low-angle slider shots and also back on the articulating arm for the first dance, toasts, and high-angle dance floor shots.

Cheapest Custom Ratio Field monitor? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14010/cheapest-custom-ratio-field-monitor Sat, 31 Oct 2015 16:53:59 +0000 redimp 14010@/talks/discussions Hi guys, I am looking for a way to preview my anamorphic footage on BMPCC and am looking for the cheapest external monitor with user-defined ratio.

I do not care about any other features, I just want it to be around 7'' or 10'' and able to produce 3.55:1 anamorphic or 1:1 square image.

It can be plasticky, heavy, I don't mind chinese-grade quality, just need it to be able to produce ratios that I mentioned above and fit BMPCC.

Main issue is the price point – I am on a very tight budget.

Thanks!

Searching for monitor recommendations - 5.6" or 7" with FC http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14117/searching-for-monitor-recommendations-5.6-or-7-with-fc Wed, 25 Nov 2015 13:38:05 +0000 TimTomTum 14117@/talks/discussions Hey guys,

I am currently struggling to find a new monitor for use with my GH2 and BMPCC. No way to test where I live so I hit a wall which one to take. I want 5.6" or 7", pretty bright. Peaking and False color is what I demand from it.

I looked into the following: Lilliput 663 O/P: Finding it new for 320€ Lillipit 664 O/P: Finding it used for 220€, but no tests or comparisons whatsoever to judge quality

Aputure VS 3: Just new 390€

and something else: Small HD DP6 390€ used. Would that be worth it? I know Small HD to be a good brand, so I guess it would excell build quality wise over the Lillputs.

Sadly MustHD and Ikan monitors are hard to come by here in Germany, used and new. Please share some recommendations!

Cheers, Tim

This new devices from us, are not only a monitor or a monitor + a recorder, so please do not complain about the size, saying it is bulky, too big etc .., now is much more smaller than previous model, and remember that this are also a fully powered computers and now a powerful Live Streaming devices too. Im sorry, I dont like people being critic with our products saying ohh thats bigger and bigger, a brick, too much size, etc. Really, this is an All In One tool, incredible small, pocket size, and with a lot of features customers can use. I don't understand some times some people.

Im aware that on this forum there are much joke, smoke parties and the like, but a little of rock and roll and we like it.

This is a great army knife, just read, probably not small as desired for a DSLR, but perfect for the rest of cameras in size, and the Live Streaming feature is one of the things -very useful- that we love and think customers will take a great opportunity with. Thats out last work, our new compact size device's. Please, if you dont need a workstation in your hand or if you dont need the Live Streaming capability or the uncompressed 444 10bit 4K capacility please dont say this is bigger than say SmallHD or the like in about size/weight. This is a device very useful for on/off locations.

We have put a lot of effort, time and funds, and we have a very lower margin of benefit with the introductory prices that we tag'ged this devices,

I hope you like it guys.

It's free for everybody. It creates checkerboard like gamma patterns. You can check gamma calibration of your monitor at different Luminance stages. It also shows you how your monitor performs at different viewing angles.

Hope you will enjoy. Please let me know some good ideas for improvements.

Note: Square in the middle of color frame should appear invisible. Left square should be slightly darker and right square slightly brighter. For that purpose both L (Luminance) values should be equal. Click on lower L value (for inner Square) to adjust to the upper (for outer checkerboard) automatically.

MAC version will come soon;-)

According to recent research, the global UHD TV market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 45% from 2015-2019.1 This increased interest in 4K content has created a desire for more features and power in 4K devices. Driven by this customer demand, the Toughpad 4K Performance model now features an HDMI 2.0 input that supports up to Digital Cinema 4K (4090 x 2160, 60 fps), allowing videographers and photographers to plug cameras directly into the device so its 3840 x 2560 LCD can serve as a viewfinder as well as a workstation, creating a highly portable platform for real-time viewing, evaluation and editing of work at the point of capture. This capability is enabled through a proprietary Panasonic software solution.

To meet the horsepower needs of UHD content management, production and editing, the Toughpad 4K Performance model now features an Intel® Core™ i7-5600U vPro™ processor and an AMD FirePro™ M5100 graphics chip, providing highly mobile professionals in visual fields with the ultimate productivity and workflow enhancement tool.

Smartphone panel as an EVF/monitor, DIY http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12978/smartphone-panel-as-an-evfmonitor-diy Tue, 12 May 2015 15:51:45 +0000 AZScott 12978@/talks/discussions (posted this in another forum, but I think the DIY discussion are more robust here)

As my cameras/rigs have been getting smaller and lighter (BMPCC and GH4), most of the readily available monitors seem hopelessly large and clunky, expensive and underpowered.

Even my personal favorite DP-6, which seemed impossibly svelte when new, now feels heavy, chunky and unwieldy. I recently built my own BMPCC/GoPro lightweight gimbal, and that's an especially good candidate for a small/light screen.

Although there are hopeful signs pointing the right direction (Ursa Viewfinder if it ran off a 9v / HDMI, SmallHD 502/Sidefinder), many people like me just wish they could use their smartphone as a monitor.

Or better yet, what about just using a smartphone LCD or OLED screen? The main problem seems to be the secretive, closed MIPI standard that most phones and tablets use.

I've been following this Hackaday project for awhile, and they look to be on the verge of selling a commercial controller to take an HDMI input and run a MIPI DSI panel:

https://hackaday.io/project/364-mipi...ldhdmi-adapter

There's a poll up right now to gauge interest, and see which panels to support out-of-the-box, among the iPhone 4, 5, Galaxy S3/S4, and Droid DNA:

http://doodle.com/uv283rp366prppnt

No pricing yet, but the Bill of Materials is under $40, so my best guess is the board will sell for less than double that. I really like the idea of being able to buy a cheap smartphone replacement panel (>$25 for iPhone 4/5, >$80 for 1080p Galaxy), adding a 5v micro-USB power source (that can run for hours and hours, maybe days), and slapping it in a SUPER thin 3D-printed enclosure.

It may not be a fancy turnkey solution, but the possibilities are interesting. The Spartan-6 FPGA that it's based on should have plenty of horsepower to support all the advanced monitor features, if some enterprising coder wants to write custom firmware for guides, peaking, false color, histograms, LUTs, etc. etc. My two main cameras have most of that built-in, so 90% of the time, I just want a nice, bright monitor to frame and focus. They're already talking about testing the 2560x1440 Galaxy Note 4 screen, so there may be some 4K possibilities out of this little board, as well.

What do you folks think?

Does anybody here have experience with this?) Better IPS screen Is available now (but I don't mind waiting a few weeks more for the BMD VA)

Samurai Blade Cons vs BMD VA: No 1080 60p (bummer!) Lower resolution HD vs FHD screen (I think this is going to be less of an issue than I originally thought? As the Atomos screen is I suspect an otherwise better quality screen??) SSDs vs SD cards (well... this is arguably a pro, but I already have SD cards. I don't have any spare SSDs) No HDMI in/out (a non issue for my F3, could be a minor issue if I want to use it with other cameras as will need to use a convertor)

As their new prices are now: Ninja 2 $295 Ninja Blade $495 Samurai Blade $495

Atomos Samurai Blade or SmallHD for GH3? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7201/atomos-samurai-blade-or-smallhd-for-gh3 Sun, 09 Jun 2013 01:55:17 +0000 sdes 7201@/talks/discussions Any thoughts? I am looking for an external monitor for my compact rig. The new SmallHD AC7 looks like a lot of monitor for the bucks with great focus assist. But the new Atomos Samurai Blade also looks nice. And it records (4:2:2 ProRes) from HDMI making workflow easier..

Field monitor (only) with features like Atomos Shogun http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13632/field-monitor-only-with-features-like-atomos-shogun Mon, 31 Aug 2015 10:40:05 +0000 JackBayer 13632@/talks/discussions Hi!

As I browsed the web on the advantages (or lack thereof) of using a Shogun with my GH4 I realized that I'd really like to have all those software features on my field monitor. Since I am not going to need external recording I was a monitor-only solution comparable to the Shogun. 1080p would be nice also.

Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

Edit:

@Vitaliy_Kiselev Here's a list of my desired features (could have thought of that myself...):

  • Custom frame guides
  • 1080p
  • IPS display (or whatever technology bright enough for outdoor usage)
  • normal HDMI port (not mini or micro)
  • waveforms, RGB levels and histogram would be nice but are not a necessity.
  • focus peaking
  • 7 or 8 inch
  • a nice user interface

It doesn't have to be cheap (it couldn't be).
