DMX Control of Cinematic Lighting http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13905/dmx-control-of-cinematic-lighting Thu, 08 Oct 2015 05:43:08 +0000 andyharris 13905@/talks/discussions Recently I've been experimenting with scene compositing in Fusion. In particular having moving objects affecting the lighting in the composited scene. This led me to think about using DMX to control the lighting for a green screen session so that it would better match the final composited scene.

So I arranged a set of DMX Scenes to flow from one to another.

Mostly it turn out to be more complex than I expected. I written up my findings here:

Diffusing your lights http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11192/diffusing-your-lights Thu, 04 Sep 2014 07:52:50 +0000 mrbill 11192@/talks/discussions I got a great tip from a lighting gaffer the other day - if you want to produce the most beautiful soft light from your LED panels, try sticking a sheet of Depron in front of them. It's a closed cell foam used by model maker hobbyists for aircraft skins, and in a 2mm thickness, transforms the light from your LED's. As you can imagine, it's dirt cheap, and works brilliantly.

Any news on LED light with remote phosphor? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11236/any-news-on-led-light-with-remote-phosphor Tue, 09 Sep 2014 13:47:03 +0000 bubba 11236@/talks/discussions Has anybody heard of remote phosphor LED?

It is Supposed to be the next new thing. High CRI, customizable and very efficient. The outside surface of the bulb or fixture contains the phosphor and an internal high power LED source causes the phosphor to glow. The benefit is a consistent and uniform light source with no shadows or hot spots. I've found bulb style 98 CRI lights for under US$20.

How would you improve this "Infinite White" or "High Key" video? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5840/how-would-you-improve-this-infinite-white-or-high-key-video Sat, 19 Jan 2013 16:18:12 +0000 DanPV 5840@/talks/discussions I saw this video featured on Olivia Tech. It is a video made by one of her readers after she posted a tutorial about how to produce a "Infinite White" (high key backround) video.

I don't mean to be overly critical but something looks weird to me. Here are my guesses about what may have happened:

  • Key lights positioned too low
  • Light spill from background lights falling on the talent's left side (Maybe this was intentional?)
  • Actor may have been positioned too close to the white background
  • The two key lights look to have been set at equal intensity. Maybe lower the brightness of one of the key lights slightly.

What do you think? How could the lighting be improved.

Westcott SkyLux LED with soft box vs a Kino Diva 401 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10610/-westcott-skylux-led-with-soft-box-vs-a-kino-diva-401 Sun, 15 Jun 2014 17:03:50 +0000 shango 10610@/talks/discussions I'm shooting interviews where I'll be balancing for daylight. Some indoors in a window lit room. Some outdoors in shaded areas where I need a bit more punch. I generally like the diva lights though haven't yet tried them outdoors. On the other hand, the Westcott SkyLux LED seems to have a bit more versatility. Also, with a 48" soft box on it, it should be much softer than the diva. My big concern would be loosing so much light from the soft box that it really won't have the punch I'm looking for. I thought I'd see if anyone has experience with both of these lights and could "illuminate" the differences a bit?

Golden hour, variable ND and white balance http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10720/golden-hour-variable-nd-and-white-balance Thu, 03 Jul 2014 11:40:37 +0000 tonalt 10720@/talks/discussions I'm going tomorrow to shoot video at golden hour by the sea with my GH4, voigtlander 17,5mm and Singh-Ray 77mm Vari-N-Duo Polarizing Variable Neutral Density Filter.

I'm not sure if I'm going to use the ND filter. But if I do, how do I set the white balance?

Variable ND filter tends to change the colors and I've read that automatic WB is not recommended as it loses that golden glow from golden hour.

This filter has also polarizer. Any sense to use that feature?

I was wondering if it it was a bunch of these Neopixels (https://www.adafruit.com/products/1426) stuck together but I don't think so. Should be easy enough to cobble something like this together. It would need a pretty decent power supply though.

Noob Wireless Flash Question http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9951/noob-wireless-flash-question Sun, 23 Mar 2014 19:32:24 +0000 ragnar 9951@/talks/discussions I own a GH2 and use the DMW-360 flash with it and was thinking of buying a GX7 and the new updated DMW-360L wireless flash to go with it. I was kinda hoping that wireless flash meant that the DMW-360L would fire when I just press the shutter button on the GX7 with nothing else needed. However, I think, if I'm understanding it right, that the pop-up flash on the GX7 needs to flash in order to trigger the wireless flash. Is that correct? I'm sorta hoping that it isn't as I'd like to have just the DMW-360L fire wirelessly and nothing else at all. Does the flash on the GX7 have to flash too? Is that how all wireless flash units work, where one triggers the other, or is there one that fires remotely with just a shutter press. Thanks.

How bad is the green cast? How bright is it? Happy about any tips. Thanks

Lighting and Blocking a two Camera Shoot http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8699/lighting-and-blocking-a-two-camera-shoot Thu, 07 Nov 2013 09:41:23 +0000 Mckinise 8699@/talks/discussions Situation: Have about 10 days to shoot about 75 pages of properly formatted script. Mostly Dialogue so it is playing out like a stage play. I originally planned it to be a 18 day shoot, but now I am redoing it to incorporate a second camera.

We have: Dedicated Sound mixer. Two camera operators with some experience, but mainly they are following my story boards. Actors traveling in from long distances for the duration of the shoot.

My plan was to get the masters and the inserts (Story related) together and re-light for the two over the shoulders to be shot at once. I realize this will be a more complicated, but I am experimenting with a center based universal soft light directed toward the principles of the camera side fill, and having each actor keyed by an individual directed light.

The rim light is a smaller diffused clamp light that gives just enough coverage to make the actor stand out in the close up but not so much that it distracts in the foreground. To be honest, it is a tad bit distracting so I have been experimenting with edging it away from camera side as to not overly illuminate the foreground subject.

The camera set up is to the left and right of the fill light. We have been able to get in really close without issue, but there is not much room for movement, basically leaving us with static shots for dialog. To compensate we would basically do a slow push into a more extreme close up, but we have only so much area to the left or right.

Would it be more efficient to set up things in another way? If so, could you explain?
