Photokina is suspended, indefinitely http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24803/photokina-is-suspended-indefinitely Fri, 27 Nov 2020 14:08:50 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 24803@/talks/discussions

After 70 years, decreases in the imaging market force a hard cut

In view of the further massive decline in markets for imaging products, Koelnmesse has decided to discontinue organising photokina at its Cologne location for the time being. “Unfortunately, at present the framework conditions in the industry do not provide a viable basis for the leading international trade fair for photography, video and imaging,” according to Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse. “This hard cut after a 70-year shared history was very difficult for us. The trend in this industry, with which we have always had a close and trusting partnership, is very painful for us to witness. But we are facing the situation with a clear, honest decision against continuing this event, a decision to which, unfortunately, we have no alternative.”

Even before the coronavirus pandemic began, the imaging market was already subject to strong upheaval, with annual declines in the double digits. The momentum in this direction intensified massively in 2020, most recently reporting a decline in the 50-percent range. Recently, these developments have had a profound effect on photokina, which – in Cologne since 1950 – for generations has been the top address for the imaging industry and ranks among the most favourably and emotionally charged brands in the trade fair world.

Since 2014, Koelnmesse, together with the German Photo Industry Association, has taken its cue from downward market trends, responding with adjustments to the underlying concept of the trade fair as well as considerable investment in new exhibitor and visitor segments. “These changes in conceptual design, along with a shift in intervals and a change of dates, did not fundamentally improve the situation of the event,” says Oliver Frese, Management Board member and Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse. “While there are more photographs taken today than ever before, the integration of smartphone photography and videography, together with image-based communication, e.g. via social media, was not able to cushion the elimination of large segments of the classic market. As a result, the overall situation is not compatible with the quality standards of photokina as a globally renowned brand representing the highest quality and professionalism in the international imaging market.”

Koelnmesse has made its decision in close coordination with the German Photo Industry Association. Kai Hillebrandt, Chairman of that association, remarked: “Our partners in Cologne have done everything in their power to maintain photokina as the leading global trade fair. Nonetheless, an event held in 2022 could not have met the expectations of the entire imaging community that those efforts were intended to serve. That is why we, on behalf of our association, are joining them in taking this regrettably unavoidable step. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the team in Cologne for a tremendous 70 years together!”

Mergers: Nvidia buys Mellanox, really bad news http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21695/mergers-nvidia-buys-mellanox-really-bad-news Mon, 11 Mar 2019 08:41:58 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21695@/talks/discussions PR

NVIDIA and Mellanox today announced that the companies have reached a definitive agreement under which NVIDIA will acquire Mellanox. Pursuant to the agreement, NVIDIA will acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Mellanox for $125 per share in cash, representing a total enterprise value of approximately $6.9 billion. Once complete, the combination is expected to be immediately accretive to NVIDIA’s non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP earnings per share and free cash flow.

The acquisition will unite two of the world’s leading companies in high performance computing (HPC). Together, NVIDIA’s computing platform and Mellanox’s interconnects power over 250 of the world’s TOP500 supercomputers and have as customers every major cloud service provider and computer maker.

The data and compute intensity of modern workloads in AI, scientific computing and data analytics is growing exponentially and has put enormous performance demands on hyperscale and enterprise datacenters. While computing demand is surging, CPU performance advances are slowing as Moore’s law has ended. This has led to the adoption of accelerated computing with NVIDIA GPUs and Mellanox’s intelligent networking solutions.

Datacenters in the future will be architected as giant compute engines with tens of thousands of compute nodes, designed holistically with their interconnects for optimal performance.

An early innovator in high-performance interconnect technology, Mellanox pioneered the InfiniBand interconnect technology, which along with its high-speed Ethernet products is now used in over half of the world’s fastest supercomputers and in many leading hyperscale datacenters.

With Mellanox, NVIDIA will optimize datacenter-scale workloads across the entire computing, networking and storage stack to achieve higher performance, greater utilization and lower operating cost for customers.

“The emergence of AI and data science, as well as billions of simultaneous computer users, is fueling skyrocketing demand on the world’s datacenters,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “Addressing this demand will require holistic architectures that connect vast numbers of fast computing nodes over intelligent networking fabrics to form a giant datacenter-scale compute engine.

“We’re excited to unite NVIDIA’s accelerated computing platform with Mellanox’s world-renowned accelerated networking platform under one roof to create next-generation datacenter-scale computing solutions. I am particularly thrilled to work closely with the visionary leaders of Mellanox and their amazing people to invent the computers of tomorrow.”

“We share the same vision for accelerated computing as NVIDIA,” said Eyal Waldman, founder and CEO of Mellanox. “Combining our two companies comes as a natural extension of our longstanding partnership and is a great fit given our common performance-driven cultures. This combination will foster the creation of powerful technology and fantastic opportunities for our people.”

The companies have a long history of collaboration and joint innovation, reflected in their recent contributions in building the world’s two fastest supercomputers, Sierra and Summit, operated by the U.S. Department of Energy. Many of the world’s top cloud service providers also use both NVIDIA GPUs and Mellanox interconnects. NVIDIA and Mellanox share a common performance-centric culture that will enable seamless integration.

Once the combination is complete, NVIDIA intends to continue investing in local excellence and talent in Israel, one of the world’s most important technology centers. Customer sales and support will not change as a result of this transaction.

Additional Transaction Details

Post close, the transaction is expected to be immediately accretive to NVIDIA’s non-GAAP gross margin, non-GAAP earnings per share and free cash flow. NVIDIA intends to fund the acquisition through cash on its balance sheet. In addition, there is no change to its previously announced capital return program for the rest of fiscal 2020. The transaction has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors and is expected to close by the end of calendar year 2019, subject to regulatory approvals as well as other customary closing conditions, including the approval by Mellanox shareholders of the merger agreement.

I'm out http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24644/im-out Thu, 22 Oct 2020 16:34:17 +0000 shian 24644@/talks/discussions Basically. I'm out of the game.

Making a living in this business had become more trouble than it was worth. I don't post much here, because I don't spend any energy keeping up on the latest tech - that routine became exhausting and pointless, and I truly stopped caring about any of it about 5 years ago. Although I did a deep dive into this world for a recent project, and not much has changed in that time, which is pretty sad. I only ever take jobs now if the money is too ridiculously good to turn down, or if I find the project and the people reeeeeeeally interesting. For the most part, I've been consulting and creating custom looks through ColorGHear's Spectrum program, and day trading for the past 2 years to pay the bills.

I've gone back to my first love: making music, which doesn't really pay either, but producing and learning to mix is very challenging, and by challenging I also mean fun, and spending my energy designing amplifiers and playing in a band with my best friend is more fun than exhausting it making movies nobody will ever see with people who will never truly appreciate how much you completely saved their asses.

ColorGHear will still be around for as long as people are still finding it useful. Which, surprisingly, they still are. I figured with all the LUT packages flooding the market, it would get lost. But when something works, it works. So thanks for those who keep referring people to the site. I've been following some of y'alls work from a far. Keep killing it.

Sorry to everyone who messaged me, and I never got back to. I turned off email notifications a few years back, and never saw them. I'll take the day to respond. If anyone still needs me for anything, find me on facebook or IG or something.

This is a great community. Keep making cool shit.

Intel Corp is preparing to sell its NAND memory chip business to South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc for around $10 billion in an all-cash transaction, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Intel would sell its solid-state drive business in the United States and its factory in Dalian, China, which produces advanced flash memory, referred to as 3D NAND, the source told Reuters. The company would keep XPoint, its advanced memory technology unit.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier in the day that the deal could be announced as soon as Monday. Intel’s shares were up nearly 3% after the report.

It is extremely dangerous move, as cartel will be now very tight.

Mergers: Microsoft wants to buy remains of Nokia http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24559/mergers-microsoft-wants-to-buy-remains-of-nokia Tue, 06 Oct 2020 18:31:49 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 24559@/talks/discussions

Microsoft is one of the favorites to buy networking and cell phone company, Nokia, according to a leading mobile analyst firm.

CCS Insight’s predictions for 2021 include the claim that Nokia will be bought by a major U.S. tech company next year, with both Microsoft and Intel named as likely buyers.

Microsoft and Nokia, of course, have history. In 2013, Microsoft paid over $7 billion for Nokia’s handset business in an ill-fated attempt to provide a third alternative to iPhone and Android handsets with Windows Phone. It failed miserably, with the purchased assets from Nokia written off in 2015, resulting in thousands of job losses.

Nokia last week clinched a deal to become the largest equipment supplier to the U.K.’s biggest telecoms provider, BT. That won’t have failed to attract attention on the other side of the Atlantic, according to CCS Insight’s director of consumer and connectivity, Kester Mann.

“Microsoft has taken a real interest in the telecoms space. Already we’ve seen two acquisitions by them this year [Metaswitch and Affirmed Networks]... which is all about getting some expertise in the 5G and telco space and some contacts within industry. We believe Nokia could be a potential target for someone like Microsoft.”

The backlash against Chinese suppliers would also make an acquisition of the Scandinavian firm more attractive to Microsoft and other U.S. firms. “It’s clear that the U.S. are on the lookout for alternatives to Huawei, there’s been a lot of concern about that. Potentially Nokia could be that opportunity.”

If Microsoft were to show an interest in Nokia, it would face competition from its old ally Intel, which is also focusing heavily on the 5G space, according to Mann. “Intel is a company to watch in the telco space over the next few years,” he said.

US wants to control now all major 5G manufacturers and directly prohibit China to compete, even by use military force and extortion tactics.

Mergers: Microsoft buys Bethesda Softworks http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24471/mergers-microsoft-buys-bethesda-softworks Mon, 21 Sep 2020 15:51:20 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 24471@/talks/discussions

More than three billion people on the planet play games for fun, escape, and human connection. Unlike any other medium, games empower people to engage in creativity, strategic thinking and teamwork, immersing them into interactive stories and worlds created by some of the world's most amazing creators. The cultural phenomenon of gaming has made it the largest and fastest-growing form of entertainment in the world—an industry that is expected to be more than $200 billion in annual revenue in 2021.

As the gaming industry transforms from a device-centric era to a player-centric era powered by new technology that provides the freedom to play with friends anywhere on any device, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) on Monday announced plans to acquire ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, one of the largest, privately held game developers and publishers in the world. Creators of critically acclaimed and best-selling gaming franchises including The Elder Scrolls and Fallout among many others, Bethesda brings an impressive portfolio of games, technology, talent, as well as a track record of blockbuster commercial success, to Xbox. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion in cash.

With unique investments in content, community, and the cloud, Microsoft's gaming strategy differs from others by empowering people to play the games they want, with the people they want, anywhere they want. Games are the primary growth engine in gaming, and games are fueling new cloud-gaming services like Xbox Game Pass, which has reached a new milestone of over 15 million subscribers. With the addition of Bethesda, Microsoft will grow from 15 to 23 creative studio teams and will be adding Bethesda's iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass. This includes Microsoft's intent to bring Bethesda's future games into Xbox Game Pass the same day they launch on Xbox or PC, like Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios.

"Gaming is the most expansive category in the entertainment industry, as people everywhere turn to gaming to connect, socialize and play with their friends," said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. "Quality differentiated content is the engine behind the growth and value of Xbox Game Pass—from Minecraft to Flight Simulator. As a proven game developer and publisher, Bethesda has seen success across every category of games, and together, we will further our ambition to empower the more than three billion gamers worldwide."

"This is an awesome time to be an Xbox fan. In the last 10 days alone, we've released details on our two new consoles which go on pre-order tomorrow, launched cloud gaming in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and now we're making another investment in the most critical part of our strategy: the games," said Phil Spencer, executive vice president, Gaming at Microsoft. "Generations of gamers have been captivated by the renowned franchises in the Bethesda portfolio and will continue to be so for years to come as part of Xbox."

The planned acquisition includes publishing offices and development studios spanning the globe with over 2,300 employees, including Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. Bethesda's critically acclaimed and best-selling franchises include The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored, among others.

Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media was founded in 1999 by Chairman and CEO Robert A. Altman; Bethesda's structure and leadership will remain in place.

"This is a thrilling day for this company, our employees, and our fans. We have enjoyed a close partnership with Microsoft for decades, and this deal is a natural progression of those years working together," said Altman. "The big winners today are our fans. We are continuing to develop our slate of AAA games, but now with Microsoft's scale and entire Game Stack, our games can only get better."

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and completion of regulatory review. Microsoft expects the acquisition to close in the second half of fiscal year 2021 and to have minimal impact to non-GAAP operating income in fiscal years 2021 and 2022. Non-GAAP excludes the expected impact of purchase accounting adjustments, as well as integration and transaction-related expenses.

We see clear forming of super monopolies and Microsoft will be one of them.

Sony can leave smartphones market - sensors prices hike will follow http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21472/sony-can-leave-smartphones-market-sensors-prices-hike-will-follow Sun, 03 Feb 2019 14:20:00 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21472@/talks/discussions image

It is strong rumors in the industry that on top management meeting Sony started to discuss fully axing mobile communication division and specifically smartphone production.

Big consequences can be hike of CMOS sensors prices, as now lot of development expenses are being hidden in the smartphones department financials. Management do not want clients to know that Sony is not so competitive in the sensors area in the cost terms. This can also lead to breakup of hidden agreement with Samsung and return of Samsung into consumer cameras market within few years.

Sony won't sell or service cameras in Brazil anymore http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24453/sony-wont-sell-or-service-cameras-in-brazil-anymore Thu, 17 Sep 2020 17:15:59 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 24453@/talks/discussions image

We inform that the Sony Group decided to close its factory in Manaus at the end of March 2021 and interrupt, in mid-2021, sales of consumer products by Sony Brasil Ltda.—such as TV, audio and cameras—considering the recent environment and the expected business trends. The decision aims to strengthen the structure and sustainability of its businesses, in order to respond to rapid changes in the external environment.

We also inform you that Sony Brasil will continue to maintain its local operation to offer all consumer support for products under its commercial responsibility in accordance with applicable laws and its product warranty policy.

It is important to clarify that the other Sony group businesses in Brazil (Games, Professional Solutions, Music and Pictures Entertainment) will continue to maintain their strong presence in the local market.

With 48 years of history in Brazil and in this trajectory, we are grateful for the relationship of trust built over the whole time with our strong partnership.

We are available to schedule a meeting so that we can share and detail the next steps of this trajectory.

Confident of being able to count on your understanding, we thank you in advance for your always prompt attention and collaboration with Sony Brazil.

After warranty service will cease to exist totally according to rumors. Sony won't also offer any batteries or other accessories for existing cameras.

Other rumors from Japan is that we see small step (similar to Olympus pulling our of Korea) for the huge restructure that will happen during February-March period and that will see most of the digital cameras and video division to be fired. But Sony will keep producing both consumer and pro cameras, just wil lot of shared parts and lot of outsourcing, some of their own staff will be used as contractors for around 1/4-1/5 of current cost.
