RED claims that three cameras made by defendants Sony Electronics and Sony Corporation of America “all embody the subject matter claimed in Red’s asserted patents without any license.” The federal court filing adds that “Red is informed and believes and thereupon alleges that the sale of Sony’s unauthorized, infringing cameras has resulted in lost sales, reduced the business and profit of Red, and greatly injured the general reputation of Red.” Alleging two instances of “willful and wanton” patent infringement on technology used in its Red One camera, Red is seeking a court order that its patents are “valid and enforceable” as well as an injunction against Sony’s F65, F55 and F5 cameras to stop their further sale and have them destroyed.

Canon video sensor made for astronomical and research purposes http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6326/canon-video-sensor-made-for-astronomical-and-research-purposes Mon, 04 Mar 2013 19:37:19 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 6326@/talks/discussions image

The sensor pixel size is 19um, more than 7.5-times the surface area of the pixels on the CMOS sensor incorporated in Canon's top-of-the-line EOS-1D X and other digital SLR cameras. In addition, the sensor's pixels and readout circuitry are said to employ new technologies that reduce noise, which tends to increase as pixel size increases. Thanks to these technologies, the sensor facilitates the shooting of clearly visible video images even in dimly lit environments with as little as 0.03 lux of illumination, or approximately the brightness of a crescent moon—a level of brightness in which it is difficult for the naked eye to perceive objects. When recording video of astral bodies, while an electron-multiplying CCD, which realizes approximately the same level of perception as the naked eye, can capture magnitude-6 stars, Canon's newly developed sensor is capable of recording faint stars with a magnitude of 8.5 and above.

image

Using a prototype camera employing the newly developed sensor, Canon successfully captured a wide range of test video, such as footage recorded in a room illuminated only by the light from burning incense sticks (approximately 0.05–0.01 lux) and video of the Geminid meteor shower. The company is looking to such future applications for the new sensor as astronomical and natural observation, support for medical research, and use in surveillance and security equipment.

Vitec Group Plc’s Litepanels unit won its bid to block U.S. imports of lighting for television and movie studios made overseas by competitors.

The competing lighting modules infringe two Litepanels patents and should be barred from entering the country, the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington said in a notice today on its website. The decision can be overturned by President Barack Obama on public policy grounds.

Fujitsu and Panasonic are merging LSI businesses http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6044/fujitsu-and-panasonic-are-merging-lsi-businesses Thu, 07 Feb 2013 14:07:42 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 6044@/talks/discussions

Fujitsu Ltd. said Thursday it will eliminate 5,000 jobs and merge its LSI chip business with that of Panasonic Corp. to boost global competitiveness.

The venture will design large-scale integrated, or LSI, chips and contract out their manufacture, according to a joint statement by the companies. The government-backed Development Bank of Japan has been asked to help finance the venture, they said.

Fujitsu, Japan’s biggest software services provider for companies, will take ¥112 billion in charges combined in the two quarters ending March 31 for the restructuring and will also transfer 4,500 workers at the chip unit.

Funding by the DBJ will come after government-backed funds have invested in struggling chip-maker Renesas Electronics Corp. and a liquid crystal display venture formed by Sony Corp., Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp.

Under the plan, Fujitsu may move a production line in Mie Prefecture to a new chip foundry.

Fujitsu said it expects a net loss of ¥95 billion in the year ending March 31, compared with a previous forecast for net income of ¥25 billion, it said Thursday.

Panasonic, which is scheduled to announce a midterm plan by the end of next month, is restructuring as it heads toward a second straight annual loss. The company has eliminated more than 38,000 jobs since April, halted smartphone sales in Europe and closed plants making lithium-ion power cells.

Renesas Electronics Corp. is not involved in the latest merger due to discrepancies over the terms of the operations merger.

Generation Y has been described by Howe and Strauss as ‘a consumer behemoth, riding atop a new youth economy of astounding scale and extravagance’. This has created an explosion of market research companies focused, sometimes exclusively, on finding out what teens and young adults think, want and feel. There isn’t a company or corporation, big or small, that doesn’t want to know what this group values and desires. If they can understand the Y market and communicate effectively with Y consumers, then corporations practically have a licence to print money.

Vector Video in 5 years? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5518/vector-video-in-5-years Tue, 18 Dec 2012 12:03:22 +0000 pletta 5518@/talks/discussions Check out this article. If this really does happen it seems to me that the implications for digital video would be huge.

The new codec (a program that encodes or decodes a digital video stream) is reportedly capable of filling in the boundaries between the elements in vector images. No details have been released regarding how the process works. The result, however, is moving vector-based video that is said to be equal in quality to bitmap video.

“This is a significant breakthrough which will revolutionize the way visual media is produced,” said Prof. Phil Willis, of the university’s Department of Computer Science.

The codec was developed in partnership with tech firms Root6 Technology, Smoke & Mirrors and Ovation Data Services. Commercial partners are now being sought to develop the technology further.

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?90306-REDRAY-ODEMAX

Uses new .RED file format for distribution at 2.5MB/sec for 4K content, you can convert your DPX and TIFF files also. Built-in encryption with DRM! (key feature for us content producers)

Supports 4K 3D, up to 60 fps playback. (Yep, handles Hobbit and think future Avatar framerate)

ODEMAX network Launches January at Sundance, you can distribute your own films at approx 70%/30% cut for home distribution and lower % for theater chains...

Discussion: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?90304-REDRAY-ODEMAX-Comments

They dream big in 4K over there, and this tears down the studio and distribution barrier for indies...

On the other hand, Sony has the most 4K installations around, but this is an indie movement 4K push and if it does take off I congratulate them.

The beauty of this solution, is the control you have over the entire process from start in .R3D to final distribution in .RED at that super low compression for 4K 3D up to 60p with DRM- just magnificent.

Truesense Imaging announced its first CMOS image sensor specifically targeting applied imaging markets such as machine vision, intelligent transportation systems, and surveillance.

The 12 million pixel KAC-12040 Image Sensor combines high resolution with very high frame rate, flexible readout, and excellent near-IR sensitivity – features that address the critical requirements of many current and emerging imaging applications. The new device will be shown as part of Truesense Imaging’s display at the 25th annual VISION Trade Fair, held November 6 – 8 in Stuttgart, Germany.

“The KAC-12040 leverages our extensive background and broad expertise in pixel design, system-on-a-chip architectures, and sensor manufacturing to bring an exciting new combination of features to camera manufacturers and their end markets,” said Chris McNiffe, CEO of Truesense Imaging, Inc. “This device clearly supports our strategy to be the leading provider of both CCD and CMOS sensors for high performance applications, and to provide our customers with the very best image sensor products regardless of their underlying technology.”

The KAC-12040 Image Sensor is the first in a planned family of CMOS devices that complement Truesense Imaging’s expansive CCD portfolio by providing the functionality and flexibility available uniquely from CMOS technology. Based on an advanced 4.7-micron pixel, the new CMOS platform provides both global and rolling shutter for versatile image capture, very high frame rate, and excellent near-IR sensitivity – features required by a growing set of applied imaging applications such as machine vision, intelligent transportation systems, and surveillance. The platform also includes a flexible read-out architecture that supports programmable, multiple regions of interest, enabling full speed, interspersed video streams for simultaneous monitoring of both full field of view and multiple localized zones.

With 12 million pixels (4000 x 3000) in a 4/3 optical format, the KAC-12040 supports 8, 10, 12, and14-bit output, providing 10-bit full resolution readout at up to 60 frames per second. Higher frame rates are possible through image cropping, including a pre-programmed Quad Full HD (3840 x 2160, 8.3 MPix) mode that supports 10-bit readout at 100 fps. The architecture of the device enables 2, 4, or the full set of 8 output banks to be selected during readout, allowing power to be conserved when very fast throughput is not required.

The KAC-12040 Image Sensor is available in monochrome and Bayer color configurations, and is sampling today with production planned for Q2, 2013. An evaluation system that allows detailed analysis of the sensor’s performance is also available for purchase, with availability expected in Q4, 2012. , a leading provider of high-performance CCD image sensors for the world’s most demanding applications, today announced its first CMOS image sensor specifically targeting applied imaging markets such as machine vision, intelligent transportation systems, and surveillance.

I enjoy it when a supplier says thanks for the business, now pay your tab...

reminds me of GM screwing their suppliers at every chance...

Defending patent lawsuits cost money...

1080p Sharp panel http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4783/1080p-sharp-panel Mon, 01 Oct 2012 19:42:16 +0000 NickBen 4783@/talks/discussions "Is THAT an HDTV in your Pocket? or are you just happy to see me..."

Why yes it is - and it's quite SHARP!

http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/01/sharp-lcd-panel-type-5/

"LCD panel type 5 -- a 5-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display packing a Retina-busting 443 ppi (just trumping LG's similar 440 ppi LCD). An outcome of its layer-reducing CG-Silicon technology, the smartphone-targeted screen goes into full-scale production this month and will be shown off at CEATEC Japan this very week."

Using a 1080p 5" telephone screen with the GH3 might be just the ticket for some of us seeking to do more with wifi on a great resolution phone as a pocketable monitor.

Hopefully, this panel tech eventually ushers in the next gen of 1080p small monitors for pro video use...

Aren't you happy to see it?

Putting to bed the "What's acceptable for broadcast standards" in USA http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4869/putting-to-bed-the-whats-acceptable-for-broadcast-standards-in-usa Thu, 11 Oct 2012 21:09:49 +0000 vicharris 4869@/talks/discussions For a long time now, I've heard people talk about what networks and cable will accept as min for broadcast standards in terms of mbps and spacing. I too drank the cool-aide and thought it was set in stone. Yes, I've heard many people in different countries getting footage accepted and also getting it turned down. Well, here's what's going on in the USA.

For the past two weeks, I've been working on a Chevy National Commercial and just today a top rated CBS 1 hour show. The Chevy Nationals main cameras were old Arri film cameras which were pretty cool but they had a Canon C100 running around getting footage as well. I asked them about min broadcasting standards and they said there's no problem with the 24mbps footage they shoot with it to be accepted. Good to know. Now on to today, the CBS show. The main cameras where Alexas, no surprise there but 5 other cameras they were shooting with were a mix of Canons T2I or T3I, I couldn't tell which one, 5Ds and GoPros. I asked the DP about the footage and requirements and he said they shoot with these all the time and have no problems! Great to hear as well. I can't wait to see the episode and see how it all cuts together since I know what camera was shooting from which angle.

The main point of this long, boring post, and I'm sure many of you know this and hopefully many don't, is that no matter what it's shot on, as long as it's done well and not a damn Iphone, it'll do!

I've had worries about shooting on my GH2 and getting it past QC but now I don't. It's a nice feeling to have. I'm actually shooting something this weekend for broadcast and they had no problem with the GH2 as long as it doesn't look like shit. Hopefully I'll keep it in focus ;)
