Panasonic gets Technology and Engineering Emmy Award http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8294/panasonic-gets-technology-and-engineering-emmy-award- Tue, 01 Oct 2013 12:48:57 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 8294@/talks/discussions

Panasonic Corporation will be presented with a Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award for 2013 by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The honor is being conferred upon Panasonic in recognition of the company’s development of In-Camera Electronic Compensation for Lateral Chromatic Aberrations in External Lenses. The Emmy Award will be presented on Thursday, January 9, 2014 as part of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

“This technology has helped us maintain high-quality imaging while making improvements in size, weight and affordability, and now combined with master-quality AVC-ULTRA recording and native 1920 x 1080 imagers, CAC has contributed to new benchmarks for HD acquisition, getting around inherent limitations of optics.”

Lateral chromatic aberrations are inherent to all optics and must be compensated for in the optical design. The trend to smaller imager formats and less-expensive optics had meant compromises in image performance without an alternative solution to this problem. The concept of modeling the aberrations of a lens and applying real-time electronic correction provides a very significant increase in image quality and permits lower cost-cameras and optics to create better images

Samsung ISOCELL http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8211/samsung-isocell Tue, 24 Sep 2013 06:14:28 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 8211@/talks/discussions

Samsung Electronics announced its new advanced pixel technology for CMOS image sensors, ISOCELL. This new technology substantially increases light sensitivity and effectively controls the absorption of electrons, resulting in higher color fidelity even in poor lighting conditions. - See more at: http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=28442#sthash.h9Spe5Hl.dpuf

The quality of an image sensor is determined by the amount of light that is accurately captured by the individual pixels within the sensor array. With the market pressure to increase camera resolution and image quality, without growing the camera size, the pixels have had to shrink, while improving their performance at the same time – a challenging task.

image

To meet this challenge, previous sensor technology developments focused on improving the light absorption of each pixel, and have progressed pixel technology from FSI (Front Side Illumination) to BSI (Back Side Illumination) which places photodiode at the top to maximize photoelectric efficiency. While being very effective at the time, this BSI technology also faced limitations in improving image quality as pixel sizes continued to decrease.

ISOCELL technology forms a physical barrier between neighboring pixels – isolating the pixel. This isolation enables more photons to be collected from the micro-lens and absorbed into the correct pixel’s photodiode minimizing undesired electrical crosstalk between pixels and allowing expanded full well capacity (FWC).

image

Compared to conventional BSI pixels, the ISOCELL pixels decrease the crosstalk by approximately 30 percent which results in higher color fidelity to reproduce the original color with sharpness and richness, and increase the full well capacity (FWC) by 30 percent which leads to greater dynamic range.

Additionally, an imager designed with ISOCELL can feature a 20 percent wider chief ray angle (CRA), reducing the height of the camera module. This makes it suitable for slim and small form factor mobile devices with challenging low z-height requirements.

Plant is responsibe for about 15% of worldwide DRAM supply.

Reports are controversal. Some state that price hike will happen in retail. Hynix, of course, is optimistic. :-)

Hynix representatives told PCWorld that the fire raged a mere 90 minutes and didn’t materially damage the factory’s clean-room fabrication equipment. The smoke appeared worse than it was because as the fire mainly occurred in air-purification area, Hynix said.

"Currently, there is no material damage to the fab equipment in the clean room, thus we expect to resume operations in a short time period so that overall production and supply volume would not be materially affected," company representative Seongae Park said in a statement.

"In addition, we expect that the majority of damage will be covered through insurance."

Canon high-sensitivity 35mm FF sensor, addition http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8075/canon-high-sensitivity-35mm-ff-sensor-addition- Wed, 11 Sep 2013 23:58:33 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 8075@/talks/discussions Few months ago we had news related to this sensor, today Canon published quite strange PR.

Japan, September 12, 2013—Canon Inc. has successfully captured video footage of Yaeyama-hime fireflies flying in darkness, a feat made possible by the high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor developed by Canon for video capture that was announced in March 2013.

The high-sensitivity, low-noise video-shooting capabilities of the dedicated 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor1 for Full HD video capture were made possible not only through the integration of the high-performance sensor technologies employed in Canon's digital SLR cameras, but also through the incorporation of new pixel and readout circuitry technologies that reduce noise.

Using a camera prototype equipped with the CMOS sensor, Canon, in cooperation with ZERO CORPORATION, succeeded in capturing video of the Yaeyama-hime fireflies that inhabit Japan's Ishigaki Island, located off the northeastern coast of Taiwan. No artificial lighting was used during shooting, which took place after sunset amid the island's mountains. Despite an exceptionally dark shooting environment4 of less than 0.01 lux, a level in which the naked eye would have difficulty discerning surrounding objects, the CMOS sensor was able to capture not only the color of the light emitted by the fireflies, each of which measures only a few millimeters in length, and their movements, but also the surrounding vegetation in which the species lives. Plans call for the footage to be used to benefit future research into the Yaeyama-hime firefly.

In addition to astronomical and natural observation, Canon is looking into applying this CMOS sensor to medical research purposes as well as surveillance and crime-prevention equipment. Through the further development of innovative CMOS sensors, Canon aims to expand the realm of photographic possibilities while cultivating the world of visual expression.

Another visually loseless video compression http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8074/another-visually-loseless-video-compression Wed, 11 Sep 2013 23:00:24 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 8074@/talks/discussions

TICO compression is visually lossless light compression specifically designed for the industry. It is is extremely tiny in hardware (FPGA, ASIC) , fast and powerful in software (CPU), robust for real-time operation with no latency.

Up to now, image and video are sent or stored uncompressed into many displays and systems such as cameras videos servers or recorders. TICO is a smart upgrade path to manage higher resolutions (4K, 8K…) and frame rates while assuring visual quality, keeping power and bandwidth at a reasonable budget and reducing significantly the complexity and cost of the system.

TICO compression key features

  • Visually Lossless quality between 2:1 and 4:1.
  • Persistent and Robust: Indistinguishable image loss over multiple generations
  • Latency: Few Microseconds – very few line of pixels ( selectable from 1 to x)
  • Small complexity and ultra-compact codec: easy to implement in low-cost FPGA or ASIC. It uses little internal memory and no external memory.
  • Powerful , Real-time or faster than real-time in CPU
  • Compatible with different resolutions, from mobile to 4K/8K UHDTV, via multiple usual transport schemes.
  • Designed to be a standard for the industry-wide support: TICO compression technology is available on multiple software and hardware technologies.
  • Code, hardware IP-cores and software libraries are licensable from intoPIX.

IniLabs, a spinoff from the Neuroinformatics Institute at the University of Zurich, has developed a new sensor, known as the VS128 DVS, which eliminates many of the limitations of conventional cameras.

Rasterized images require a comparatively large amount of time and energy for processing because of all the redundant information they collect. The VS128 eliminates the need for expensive post-processing and compression by never acquiring redundant information in the first place. The key to achieving this is to do away with conventional frames and instead convert the information in a visual scene to a more supple currency — spikes.

Imec and Panasonic present 4K2K CMOS sensor http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7334/imec-and-panasonic-present-4k2k-cmos-sensor Sun, 23 Jun 2013 21:57:13 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 7334@/talks/discussions The co-developed imager sensor chip targets high speed, high resolution imaging applications such as next generation HDTV

Leuven, Belgium – June 18, 2013 – Imec presents a CMOS image sensor capable of capturing 12-bit 4,000x2,000pixel progressive images at 60 frames per second (fps). Based on a stagger-laced dual exposure, the image sensor developed with Panasonic, was processed using imec’s 130nm CMOS process on 200mm silicon wafers to deliver high-speed and high-quality imaging, at reduced output bit rate.

The number of pixels on image sensors in video and still cameras keeps increasing, along with the frame rate and bit resolution requirements of the images. 4K2K will be the next-generation broadcasting format, offering an increase by a factor of two in both horizontal and vertical resolution compared to current state-of-the-art High Definition TV.

The image sensor chip is a floating diffusion shared 4T pixel imager, with a pitch of 2.5 micron and a conversion gain of 70 μV/e-, which allows for both a classical rolling shutter or stagger-laced scanning mode. The 4K2K 60-fps imaging performance is realized by 12-bit column-based delta-sigma A/D converters. The stagger-laced scanning method improves imaging sensitivity and realizes a 50 percent reduction in output data rate by alternating the readout of two sets of horizontal pixel pairs arranged in two complementary checkerboard patterns. Additionally, the overall power consumption of the imager is less than two Watts.

“This is an important milestone for imec to demonstrate our capability to co-design, prototype and manufacture high performance CMOS image sensors in our 200 mm CMOS fab,” commented Rudi Cartuyvels, Senior Vice President Smart Systems & Energy Technologies at imec.
