Canon plans to lauch another Japan factory http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17643/canon-plans-to-lauch-another-japan-factory Thu, 31 Aug 2017 08:28:34 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 17643@/talks/discussions

TOKYO — Canon plans to have a new camera plant in Japan up and running by 2019 as it moves more production back home, relying on factory automation to lower the cost of domestic operations.

The Japanese electronics maker will acquire 300,000 sq. meters of land for a digital camera factory in southern Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture as early as September. The plant will be Canon’s first new camera factory in this country since 2010, and will feature labor-saving assembly lines of the sort Canon is installing across its Japanese facilities to make domestic production cost-competitive. Total costs are projected to be around 20 billion yen ($181 million).

The facility will take over production of single-lens reflex cameras formerly manufactured at another Miyazaki plant. Canon will eventually consider bringing production of some compact digital cameras now made overseas back to Japan as well. The company produced 56% of its cameras and other offerings in this country in the year 2016, and plans to raise that figure to 60%.

More robots and less compact sales, so old factories closing become natural.

And who knows if we will see Canon under same owners and brand in 2019, who knows.

Shocker: B&H are also capitalists http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13928/shocker-bh-are-also-capitalists Tue, 13 Oct 2015 17:58:25 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 13928@/talks/discussions

The workers described shocking conditions at B&H Photo warehouses. Employees are told to unload or carry extremely heavy loads, without sufficient help or safety training. Pallets are often stacked more than 15 feet high, and workers operating the heavy machinery to unload the pallets are rarely trained. Other workers are forced to carry heavy loads alone and suffer back injuries. Dust is constantly in the air, and the rooms are extremely hot and dirty. “My nose bleeds two or three times a day sometimes,” said B&H worker Silverio Cano. “I went to the doctor, and she told me that the nosebleeds were caused by the dust in the warehouse.”

Workers say they are not permitted to use emergency exits. During a recent fire at the warehouse, “there was a ton of smoke, but we continued working, even when the room filled with smoke,” recalled B&H Photo worker Baltizar Martinez. “When we were finally allowed to leave, we had to go through the metal detectors. This process lasted for a half hour. When we got outside, there were 50 firefighters and a helicopter, and imagine! We had been inside, working, this whole time.” After the fire, nothing changed. “The alarm goes off from time to time, but no one pays it any attention,” said Martinez.

Qualcomm Spectra depth sensing system http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17530/qualcomm-spectra-depth-sensing-system Tue, 15 Aug 2017 09:00:28 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 17530@/talks/discussions image

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM), through its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies Inc., announced an expansion to the Qualcomm® Spectra™ Module Program, capable of improved biometric authentication and high-resolution depth sensing, designed to meet growing demands of photo and video for a broad range of mobile devices and head mounted displays (HMD). This module program is built on the cutting-edge technology behind the Qualcomm® SpectraTM embedded image signal processors (ISP) family. Engineered by Qualcomm Technologies from the ground up, Qualcomm Spectra paves the way for future image quality and computer vision innovations in upcoming Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM Mobile Platforms.

"Whether used for computational photography, video recording, or for computer vision applications that require accurate motion tracking, it's clear that power efficient camera image signal processing has become more important for the next generation of mobile user experiences," said Tim Leland, vice president of product management, Qualcomm TechnologiesInc. "Our breakthrough advancements in visual quality and computer vision, combined with our family of integrated Spectra ISPs for Snapdragon, are designed to support an ecosystem of cutting edge mobile applications for our customers."

Together, the new ISPs and camera modules are engineered to support superior image quality and new computer vision use cases that utilize deep learning techniques and bokeh quality image experiences with a faster time to market for smartphone and HMD devices. The next-generation ISPs feature a new camera architecture designed for advancements in computer vision, image quality and power efficiency for the next Snapdragon mobile and VR platforms. The camera module program additions consist of a trio of camera modules, including an iris authentication module, a passive depth sensing module and an active depth sensing module.

Qualcomm Spectra Module Program

Launched last year, the Qualcomm Spectra Module Program was designed to help customers accelerate time to market for devices with stunning image quality and advanced camera technology. Last year's offerings provided customers with optimized, dual-camera module solutions that make it easy for manufacturers to produce smartphone cameras with improved low light photography and video recording with smooth zoom. Now, the camera module program is being expanded to include new camera modules capable of utilizing active sensing for superior biometric authentication, and structured light for a variety of computer vision applications that require real-time, dense depth map generation and segmentation.

Second-generation Qualcomm Spectra ISP

The second-generation Qualcomm Spectra ISP is the next family of integrated ISPs that utilizes new hardware and software architecture designed specifically for advancements in computer vision, image quality, and power efficiency in future Snapdragon platforms. It features multiframe noise reduction for superior photographic quality, along with hardware-accelerated motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF), and inline electronic image stabilization (EIS) for superior camcorder-like video quality.

The low-power, high-performance motion tracking capabilities of the Qualcomm Spectra ISP, in addition to optimized simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms, are designed to support new extended reality (XR) use cases for virtual and augmented reality applications that require SLAM.

The Qualcomm Spectra family of ISPs and new Qualcomm Spectra camera modules are expected to be part of the next flagship Snapdragon Mobile Platform.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said a memory chip boom that propelled it to record profit in the second quarter is likely to continue in the third, just as revenue is widely expected to benefit from sales of OLED screens to Apple Inc.

The world's biggest maker of memory chips, smartphones and TVs is set to smash its annual profit record after better-than-forecast performance in its mobile business lifted April-June profit slightly above its early-July guidance, analysts said.

Samsung in a filing said operating profit rose 72.7 percent to 14.1 trillion won in the second quarter, versus 14 trillion won estimated in July. Revenue rose 19.8 percent to 61 trillion won, also in line with its earlier estimate.

Yes, and they closed NX division to get few engineers and save tiny money.

Canon's consolidated operating profit for the year ending in December is expected to jump 40% to 330 billion yen ($2.94 billion).

Sales are also expected to top the company's 4.02 trillion yen forecast, climbing 20% to nearly 4.1 trillion yen.

Laser printer sales have grown in China and emerging countries in Southeast Asia. New high speed models have been popular. Sales of toner and other highly profitable consumables have also risen with the increase in printer sales.

Earnings at a medical device subsidiary purchased from Toshiba last year are healthy.

Canon is also cutting costs through automation. The introduction of robots to the company's single-lens reflex camera factory in Oita Prefecture has helped reduce the number of necessary workers for certain tasks from some 40 to just three or four. Automation at printer and other factories has also contributed to earnings growth by improving productivity.

The digital camera business is bouncing back. Sales of expensive interchangeable-lens cameras are recovering in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Group operating profit for the January-June half likely jumped 60% to around 170 billion yen. Profitability improved thanks to greater sales of printer consumables. Sales appear to have grown 20% to about 2 trillion yen.

With these changes, the transformation process begun in 2016 shall be consistently continued: under the umbrella of "Imaging Unlimited", Photokina last year inspired both exhibitors and visitors and accessed new target groups for the industry.

The digital transformation of the imaging industry is advancing, and thus opening up new perspectives and value creation potential. The new date and the annual cycle should in future make Photokina even more attractive to all providers of the imaging ecosystem. In this way, we show the specialised trade, the media and our users an even broader bandwidth of state-of-the-art products, applications and services in Cologne which especially suits the young imaging culture," Rainer Führes, chairman of the board of the photography industry association (PIV) is pleased to state.

The imaging ecosystem today also includes, in addition to the core areas from the imaging workflow, trend areas like virtual and augmented reality, cloud computing, as well as image recognition and holography. The growing flood of images and videos must be processed and administered, so that archiving and content management, social media and communities are coming increasingly into focus. Apps and software solutions have become indispensable both for professional use and for the end consumer. Smart home applications and computer-generated imaging are once again increasing in importance. Photokina should in future serve as an important international innovation platform.

Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, has a positive perspective on the future of the trade fair: “Photokina 2016 has shown us that this traditional brand in our portfolio has lost nothing of its attraction worldwide and in the region. The new concept has been a complete success. photokina has continued to develop further over time, as have the products, services and the market environment presented there. Now we are taking the next logical step by offering a digitally powered product environment an attractive annual platform for presenting the latest innovations and for entering into discussion with traders, specialist users and end customers."

For the 2018 event, only the series of days is changing: it will take place from Wednesday, 26.09. to Saturday, 29.09, and thus enables a more compact, more intensive trade fair experience.

Sony IMX294CJK - 4K 120fps m43 HDR sensor http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17230/sony-imx294cjk-4k-120fps-m43-hdr-sensor Sat, 24 Jun 2017 04:06:51 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 17230@/talks/discussions

Exceptional low-illumination performance

Exceptional low-illumination performance of SNR1s: 0.14 lx is realized by use of a large-size optical system and by expanding the area per pixel to 4.63 µm. This makes the IMX294CJK ideal for security camera market applications that require low-illumination performance.

High-speed movie imaging

This product realizes high-speed movie imaging with a 4K angle of view at the high frame rate of 120 frame/s, and also enables high-speed imaging at 60 frame/s in HDR drive mode.

In addition, use of our proprietary high-speed serial interface SLVS-EC together with high-speed imaging enables image transfer with few signal lines. This product is also equipped with a general-purpose MIPI (CSI-2) interface, and supports connection with a general-purpose ISP (Image Signal Processor).

Quad Bayer Coding HDR

image

The IMX294CJK uses a Quad Bayer structure, and outputs data binned in 2 × 2 pixel units in normal mode. In HDR mode, integration can be divided into long-time integration and short-time integration for each 2 pixels in the Quad array (Figure 1). In this case there is no time difference between long-time integration and short-time integration, which realizes HDR with little blending offset when imaging moving subjects.

Media Production Show http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17181/media-production-show Sun, 18 Jun 2017 23:45:55 +0000 andyharris 17181@/talks/discussions This is a show that I get invites to every year but so far have not had the time to go. This year I had a customer meeting in London and used the opportunity to visit the show afterwards:

http://www.mediaproductionshow.com/

Initially I'd got the impression that I'd find many stands for props, locations and specialist studios. In the event there was one stand for prop rental, one for derelict locations and 5 or so stands for very big (out of my league!) studios. So all in all I didn't find what I was expecting. From a PV perspective I guess many of us are in the independent boat where affordable locations and props can make a real contribution to our work.

However this show is smaller and more quiet than the BVE show which is held at Excel. The MPS show was held at the West Hall Olympia. All the main players were there, Holdan, BlackMagic, Cooke, Canon etc. I found it much easier to get onto the stands to look and try kit.

Around the periphery of the show there were many seminars, I stopped by to listen to a colour grading session about the new Resolve. It was presented by a jobbing colourist and in my view was both well presented and really useful - I now know a bit more about the face tracking features of Resolve.

At the moment I'm in the market for some thunderbolt 3 storage, because the big players were there I stopped by to check out their offerings. In both cases the systems on show had dreadful read speeds (sub 500MB/s). What was slightly more worrying is that the people on the stand didn't understand the performance and were of the view that it was a 'prototype firmware issue'.

I was quite taken by one stand that had built a sound isolated studio in an ISO container (the type seen on ships and lorries).

Would I go again? Well, if I happened to be in London perhaps, one of the main impressions I got from the show is that the vendors already knew who they expected to be there, and knew their key visitors by name.
