Buy GH1 or GH2.

Buy 20mm pancake. Buy a compact bag. Compact is beautiful.

Buy FD lens, then Ai-s, then 43 lenses, then... go full blown spending on more lenses. Buy a sling bag.

Sell some lenses. Buy more lenses.

Apply a hack. Buy more lenses.

Try different patches. Oh... 24p so sweet. But... get a real video tripod.

High bitrate. Great. Time to upgrade laptop or desktop?

Tripod... ok. But get a super cheap shoulder rig. Super. Love Made-in-China!!

Hmmmm. Stablizer is pretty cool. Get it too.

Hey. Don't forget about audio. AUDIO!!! YOU HEAR ME????

Read anamorphic patch. Awesome. Buy anamorphic adapter. 2x, 1.5x, then 1.3x.

Buy more lenses. Screw compactness. Get a bigger bag. Be a man!!!

Ah... film look. FILM LOOK!!!! Get 52mm filters. Mistake. Get 62mm filters. Dumbass mistake. Get 72mm. No. 77mm. No. 82mm!!!! Don't forget step-up rings.

I don't really need FF. But OMG... it's so freaking cheap!!! Get it!!!!

Arrrrggg. Ugly Flares!!! Hey my shoulder rig has FF rods. Matte Box would make it look ummmm... pro? Get a really big bag. OMG... get new filters.

Ok... Vitaliy is making Special Strike Team for HDMI patch. Uncompressed recorder is...

Ok. Cool. State of the Art. External HDMI recorder. Oh it has HDMI pass-through. Get HDMI 10" monitor!!! Go go go!!!

Lighting is art. No good lighting. No good shot. Period. More Made-in-China LED lights. Load'em up, sir!!! Move it move it move it!!!

Ya liked version 1? Surprise!!! Here comes MarkII.

Wake up in middle of night... when an army of Aliexpress sellers call from China. They are so pissed off, "US Dollar.. suck... you suck!!!!"

This is my suggestion, the Pelican 1510, which is the largest gear case that can still be 'carried on'- (making sure that all sharp objects- hex wrench etc are out)

Can be picked up for about $200USD, the velcro separators are extra, but really cool for camera equipment.
http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1510

I have 'no' association with Pelican in the slightest- so please post your own ideas about what is the best Gear Case to store all the F#*(ken Catchit deals!

Cheap remote control for cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15364/cheap-remote-control-for-cameras Thu, 14 Jul 2016 15:43:39 +0000 MikeLinn 15364@/talks/discussions

For several years now, Camranger has been the only choice if you want to tether your Nikon, Sony or Canon DSLR wirelessly to your phone or tablet. While the Camranger is a worthy device that allows you access to all your camera settings remotely as well as instant viewing of your images, even in live view, the $299 pricetag, to me, seemed excessive. By the time you add extras such as the USB cable, mount, etc, you’re approaching $400 not including your tablet.

We discovered a $40 alternative. All you need is a TP-Link MR3040 Battery Powered 3G Wireless Router and a $9 app called DSLR Dashboard (Android) or QDSLR Dashboard (IOS). If you go to DSLRDASHBOARD.INFO/, you can download new firmware for the router that will turn your $30 device into a $300 Camranger, with virtually the same functionality. When I got the TP-Link router, I was surprised that it is the exact same device used for the Camranger, just rebranded.

GH2 - Wise choise for the future? Speedbooster and Canon EF lenses http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14845/gh2-wise-choise-for-the-future-speedbooster-and-canon-ef-lenses Mon, 21 Mar 2016 11:01:50 +0000 testering 14845@/talks/discussions Hi, I hope I got the correct category for this thread. A friend and I share a GH2 with a lot of equipment like crane, tripod, follow focus, shoulder rig, slider etc. We need an advice for lenses we also could use in the future on a newer camera. GH2 is getting old, has to much noise, is not weather resistent and so on.

GH4, a Canon or a Blackmagic camera could be the choice in the future. As far as I figured out if we choose the path with Canon EF lenses we can use them on MFT cameras with Metabones Speedbooster EF to MFT Ultra 0.71x.

  1. Would you advise to use Canon EF mount lenses with Speedbooster instead of native MFT mount lenses? Brands like Rokinon offer mounts in different variations so my plan would be to buy Rokinon lenses as EF mounts and put them on the Speedbooster on MFT devices.
  2. What about powering the speedbooster? Do I need external power source on GH2 if I want to use electronic lenses?
  3. Could you also recommend some wide angle lenses for our GH2?
  4. What do we shoot? Nothing special just basic stuff like nature, streets, indoor, ...

Thanks in advance

Searching for gear for GH4 for shooting in Taiwan http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14009/searching-for-gear-for-gh4-for-shooting-in-taiwan Sat, 31 Oct 2015 10:06:07 +0000 kolinko 14009@/talks/discussions Hello!

I didn't have much time to check out the gh4 so far, a lot of work hinders me, going too far into research for each little thing myself, that's why I hoped I could get a little support from you hear. Mostly I'll record video and sound on myself at the same time, not sure if I'll have an assistant from time to time. My idea until now is to record in 4k, maybe in 24fps should be alright I guess. The shooting will be for a 5 video monitor/large flat screen panels installation.

My equipment so far: GH4 with kit lens 12-35mm

  • Voigtlander Nocton 17.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • Voigtlander Nocton 42.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • One SD card SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB 280 MB/s (I'll have another one like that)
  • only one battery so far
  • trolley case

I'll definitely need a second battery or the battery grip, is it a good thing to have?

  • Sound Recording device
  • Microphone (one or two? maybe too much to handle!)
  • Wind jammer (boom?)

  • Any experiences with 'Rycote Zoom H5 Audio Kit' or 'Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder with Rode NTG2 Condenser Shotgun Mic Kit'?

  • Tripod mainly to use as proper stand in any condition, not sure if I'll need a very heavy one for doing pans?

  • Rig / steady cam? I actually would prefer shooting with a rig/steady cam to make pans with a heavy tripod. Follow focus! Which one?

  • A super-portable extra light like dedo light!

  • SSD discs for backups?

  • A Mattebox?

And everything should be of proper quality, lightweight one-person-solutions, possible to get through the airports O.K..

Thanks, I appreciate your hints, ideas, experiences and comments ! kolinko

GH2 Battery Grip purchase http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7840/gh2-battery-grip-purchase Tue, 20 Aug 2013 19:45:42 +0000 glenpinn 7840@/talks/discussions hi, 8 days ago i bought my son a grip for his GH2, and after payment i never heard from them again, so yesterday i rang paypal to get them to follow up the postage details, but now i get an email from paypal saying i was refunded my money because when they were given an option to provide paypal the tracking number for the item or issue a refund of the $119usd to my account, they chose the latter, so obviously they are not a very reliable place to buy stuff from.

http://www.ownuser.com.tw/main/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_new.tpl&product_id=78&category_id=79&option=com_virtuemart&lang=en

the reason why i bought it from this place was because i first bought one from an ebay store because i was buying other items for my own panasonic camera, but when the grip arrived it did not fit the GH2, it was meant for the G2 so i returned it for a refund.

this is so annoying, so can someone please give me a link to a reliable seller, as my son is getting annoyed at all this messing about.

cheers

3D Printed Panoramic Back for 4x5 cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14159/3d-printed-panoramic-back-for-4x5-cameras Sun, 06 Dec 2015 18:46:25 +0000 eatstoomuchjam 14159@/talks/discussions I've had an idea kicking around in my mind for a while now to 3D print a sliding back for medium/large format cameras, but my old 3D printer had major problems with multi-hour prints and would never quite get them right. Finally, I acquired a newer printer which seems to be doing a better job (so far) so I built this up in blender during my evenings in the last week.

There will probably be a few iterations of this (including trying to print the slider on HIPS to bypass ABS warping problems which are keeping it from being flat), but overall I'm pretty happy with it. I brought it out for some tests this afternoon and because of a dumb mistake I made, I only had time to shoot one series, but I'm excited to shoot some more now!

CNC and 3D printing for DSLR/photography http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13841/cnc-and-3d-printing-for-dslrphotography- Sat, 26 Sep 2015 05:47:35 +0000 Arco 13841@/talks/discussions Dear guys, my name is Arek and I am GH2 owner. Since I bought my camera over 2 years ago I thought of tell You what am I doing. I am an owner of company specialized in High Resolution 3D Printing (Stereolithography) based in Poland, but a lot of time I spend helping my Dad in his company as 2nd CNC Operators Trainer/Teacher.

What does it mean to You?

It means that we have got 2 CNC machines - newest, few years used lathe and older, but launched few days ago milling machine which we can offer You! We are not typical producing company, because main area of activity is training, but why not to use our capacity. In managing area that kind of production is called MTO - Make To Order. If You have any ideas which we could work with, please let me know. From myself I can say, that we can produce for You cages, clams, rig parts etc but first of all, we need drawings. If anyone would be interested in I can also offer 3D printing but first I need to get 3D model in .stl format.

If You have any questions or quotes let me know in the post or PM!

Would be great to work with You all, because I love to work with hobbyists. I am ex modeler and Poznań University Of Technology graduate - I love to produce stuff ;)

Kind Regards, Arek

After a time, the foam falls apart. Has anyone attempted to repair the foam? If so, I would be interested in what type of glue you used and what the long term results were. Camera cases are usually not recyclable, so I would like to repair the cases I have rather than replace them. I imagine that my waterproof cases would probably last for a thousand years in a landfill.

Cheap 4k H264 HDMI recorder http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13096/cheap-4k-h264-hdmi-recorder Tue, 02 Jun 2015 11:46:15 +0000 DrDave 13096@/talks/discussions It seems like what a lot of us need to solve the various junk-firmware issues from camera makers is a small, inexpensive device that will record HDMI externally up to 4K and compress it on the fly in H264, H265, cineform, prowhatever, to regular, cheap SDXC cards. Possibly, it could have open source firmware for the compression so users could mod it.

Such a device would for example convert a Nikon cam with no internal 4K to a mean, lean, video machine. I'm posting this to see if there is interest in such a device, and maybe we can find someone to fab it or maybe some of us can make a Kickstarter project to produce it. I realize that HDMI has its problems.

Also, if there is a cheap option out there that does on the fly compression it would be interesting to see if the manufacturer would make a special edition, if there is enough interest.

It seems like everything on the market now is crazy expensive, I guess because they're handmade or specialty wood or something. They look like great products but it seems like there would be a mass produced heavy duty plastic one out there by now.

I saw someone make one out of Instamorph, but it requires a lot of little parts off amazon for just an experiment.

I don't know if it'd be cheaper, but even a 3D model on Shapeways could possibly work.

Powered lens adapter just for OIS http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12355/powered-lens-adapter-just-for-ois Tue, 10 Feb 2015 07:31:29 +0000 MarcioK 12355@/talks/discussions Just a question in my head: electronic OIS that exists in lenses are completely autonomous? i.e. if the lens have power on their power contacts in the mount, the OIS will work?

There are a lot of "smart" adapters for different mounts, but they are expensive, since it have electronics to operate aperture and (sometimes) autofocus. All good, but at least for me, if I have a OIS lens with manual aperture control, all that I would want for filming is the OIS being active.

Is it possible to build and adaptor just with the contacts to bring the power lines from the camera mount to the lens mount? There are differences between voltage values supplied to the lens between different mounts? I think that an adapter like this would be reasonably cheap and very useful.

Capture Uncompressed 1080p 60fps video for $180?!?! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9003/capture-uncompressed-1080p-60fps-video-for-180 Sun, 08 Dec 2013 01:41:00 +0000 CRFilms 9003@/talks/discussions The catch? You'll need a desktop or laptop with USB 3 and Windows, no Mac or Linux, and I'm sure SSDs but I don't know all the specifics yet. I just found this online: http://gamerzone.avermedia.com/game_capture/extremecap_u3

This is a first, a capture box that allows full 1080p 60fps capture. The supplied software only goes up to 30mbs in MP4, but you can record the live view using other software in full uncompressed video. Sucks that you need to tether it, but it looks like it's USB powered so you could take it out on the road and record with a fast laptop.

The gameplay capture scene has been advancing fast. As little as 3 years ago there was really only one player in the market(Hauppauge). Now there are 2 more major players, Elgato and Avermedia, the latter just upped the ante, and for only $180.
http://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-ExtremeCap-U3-Capture-Uncompressed/dp/B00G9QTUVE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1386491687&sr=1-1&keywords=extremecap+u3

EDIT: After doing some more searching I found this, XCAPTURE-1: http://www.solarisjapan.com/xcapture-1-usb-3-0-hd-capture-unit/?setCurrencyId=1 That can also do full HD at 60fps capture, but it's twice the price of the U3. It's main benefit is it can also capture various SD resolutions with various SD connectors, the Avermedia only has HDMI. This guy did an in depth test of the XCapture in various resolutions from SD to 1080p 60fps. http://www.sixfortyfive.com/streaming/xcapture1.html

Directors veiwfinder for 2.66.1 aspect http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10120/directors-veiwfinder-for-2.66.1-aspect Wed, 09 Apr 2014 01:35:23 +0000 thecolony123 10120@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

I been lurking, but not participating for some time due to work commitments, so hello again, my question is regarding directors viewfinders, I have a old isco model, which will do all the usual video/film formats up to 2:35:1 anamorphic, and when the finder is set to 2:35, it looks pretty long and slim as you would expect, but I have a project on the boil at the moment which will be shot with a Bolex Moller 1.5x anamorphic lens mounted on a 50mm pancake Nikkor, which when un-squeezed gives me a 2:66:1 aspect, and on the timeline looks pretty good in as much as the subject matter looks the right proportions, so my question is can you get a directors viewfinder in 2:66:1 format? I can see that Kish produced what they called a standard model that would allow for 2:35:1 and 2:55:1 which seems odd as 2:55:1 by all accounts was discontinued very quickly, I could just view locations and just guestimate the extra field of view, but it would be nice to get fairly close to what the lens would be seeing, I have always thought the Directors viewfinder a bit of a posers item, but so far not having to carry my FS100 around in some fairly rough agricultural areas has been very handy for scopeing out locations, and the isco does a good job, but if it went to to 2:55:1 it would be better, although I can find any images showing the actual difference between 2:35:1 and 2:55:1. all help greatly appreciated

ps, if you think I might get a better reply rate by putting this posting in another section, let me know

It can really be used in every single project since particles really takes your image further to a cinematic look, at least in my and Zack Snyder's opinion.
