It came last week and this weekend i've managed to spend an hour or two fiddling with it and making up a super cheap and nasty looking setup that sort of looks functional for stops that you judge by eye rather than hard stops that stop you. There's a super quick video of its operation here

There are more details of the construction in the description of the video on vimeo.

Very much version 1 that looks super cheap, but i think will do for now. I'm looking for improvements on the marker attached to or under the jar opener, as well as the markers themselves, along with the possibility of hard stops.

Fotga DP500 2S follow focus issue http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8879/fotga-dp500-2s-follow-focus-issue Mon, 25 Nov 2013 16:02:36 +0000 tylerknight 8879@/talks/discussions Just bought a Fotga DP500 2S follow focus and 15mm rod system with baseplate. I have heard nothing but great reviews on the product and thought I'd cave and get one for myself.

It arrived today and when I set it all up first of all the resistance isn't constant through the whole turn. It will be sticky and then smooth and then sticky again even when adjusting the dampening screw.

The biggest problem I have with it, which my be down to user error (I'm new to follow focuses), is that when starting and finishing or pulling forward and then pulling back the lens moves majorly and I have tried it with both my fd lenses, panasonic lenses, and nikon lenses. They all move very clearly at the start and end of a pull. Not sure if this is due to loose lens mount or if it is the follow focus but it isn't useable in any professional setting that's for sure.

Any suggestions from you guys would be great as I really don't want to have to send this back for a refund or replacement.

Just writing to say I bought the Lanparte FF02 through the deal offered here and it is great. Arrived in a week and everything was just as advertised. It took a bit of time to get things set up with my rails and some small Nikon primes, but it was easy to flip the gear around so that it fit with my setup. Focusing is smooth and there is very little give in the setup. I highly recommend this product and give thanks to Vitaliy for saving me a big bucks from the price in other places.

It's on a rig with rails (Beginner Rig from deals as well). Problem is, if I want to switch lenses, I can't get the part that attaches to the rails to loosen up enough to slide the follow focus down the rail. The part that attaches to the rails seems to be locked on there. Any suggestions?

Tech question: Possible with follow focus using internal motors? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7444/tech-question-possible-with-follow-focus-using-internal-motors Sat, 06 Jul 2013 18:39:47 +0000 AndersM 7444@/talks/discussions Hey,

If someone was given full access to the protocols of the lens control, would it be possible to make a usable follow focus using the internal motors of the lenses? We know these motors can move fast when autofocusing. I know about the Okii and other controllers for Canon that use the usb, but that moves in quite coarse steps, and is not really usable for precise pulls. I realize that it is a longshot to see this functionality in dslrs, but for the dedicated videocameras like c300/af100 a nice always calibrated internal follow focus would be really nice!

Are there any technical reasons why this wouldn't be possible?

I just got lucky and received this new Wireless FollowFocus Monitor system from Wondlan a few days ago. So far so good and the system is reliable enough for what it should be doing. I have not tried it with our BlackMagic Cinema Camera setup yet since the SDI-HDMI converter is still on its way.

More details as per video here:

Do let me know if you want me to discuss anything about its features as I might have missed some of it through the video.

Follow Focus and drift-- advice? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6626/follow-focus-and-drift-advice Sun, 07 Apr 2013 11:35:44 +0000 Brian_Siano 6626@/talks/discussions Last night I shot a theater performance with my GH2. But the event was lit for theater, not video, so it was very dim. So I borrowed a fast Lumix 20mm prime lens. This also meant a shallow DOF, so this was a chance to try using the Fotga follow-focus rig.

I ran into a problem. I marked the furthest and nearest focus points on the Fotga's white wheel. That way, I could focus based on the distance on the wheel marks. However, I tried racking the focus back and forth a bit, to get a feel for the thing... and the settings drifted. I'd rack the focus to the mark for the back of the stage... and it wasn't in focus. Same thing for the nearest point. I'd recalibrate, but the points would drift again.

Now, there's a bit of play with the Fotga follow-focus-- and I was using a small 12mm lever that added a little more play-- but I'm wondering if there's some issue with the lens or camera settings that may have contributed.

(One thing I did learn: as you rack focus during shooting, the GH2 displays a line on the screen, i.e., mountains versus flowers. I wound up making an estimate of focus based on the indicator on that point. Seems to me that I could apply cellophane tape to the screen, mark the points on that, and use the screen's focus indicator as my follow-focus marker.)
