I knocked up a quick, rough and ready Proof of Concept demo video of my project "MagicWand" wireless remote for the BMPCC and it is now available on Vimeo:

The plan is to build an Android App with other platforms to follow if there is sufficient interest.

So far AutoFocus, FocusNear, FocusFar, AutoIris, IrisOpen, IrisClose and Record Start/Stop are function over the wireless link.

Zoom is also planned, I just need a lens to test with. Anyone got a spare of the new Panasonic 14-42mm power zoom?

I can't see why it wont work with the other BMD cameras as well, I just don't have the means to test these yet.

Regards,

Andy.

AMD FX 9370 CPU 5GHZ 8 core CPU http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8673/amd-fx-9370-cpu-5ghz-8-core-cpu Tue, 05 Nov 2013 11:10:01 +0000 mee 8673@/talks/discussions This cpu dropped to $250 here in Japan a couple weeks ago, so I went for it, and also said F it and bought a swiftech 360mm liquid cooling system since it was only $200 here vs $300 in the states. The results are a very easy very stable 4.9GHZ overclock, and easy but not (YET) stable 5.3GHZ overclock. I am sure I can get somewhere close with some patience. Even at it's stock 4.4GHZ this CPU is noteworthy. It renders very quickly for me, and has made editing for me extremely fast and smooth. The CPU is notably power hungry with 220W at the higher clocks being drawn. However it does have a power mode that runs it at much lower Voltage and much slower speeds when you don't need it which actually responds extremely quick to changes in load needs. With the liquid cooling during rendering the CPU rarely goes over 44C. The new version of this CPU comes with liquid cooling for about $300 which is a good deal considering anyone buying an AMD CPU usually replaces the stock heat sink anyway. I am not an intel man so I cannot really compare with the top intel CPU's but the reviews show this CPU being only edged out by the top intel chip (singular) and even then this cpu can run ahead in multi thread operations like rendering.

Notes. I am running this on a sabertooth 990FX revision 1 with 16GB of Memory usually clocked at 1600MHZ, but I can clock it as high as 2400MHZ and still run the CPU at 4.7GHZ with no notable issues. I am using an older 465GTX GPU, and my case is an INWIN GRONE (great case with more room than most full towers. making it a pleasure to manage hard drives and keep cables hidden).

GH2 to Macbook for live monitoring - wired options? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7209/gh2-to-macbook-for-live-monitoring-wired-options Mon, 10 Jun 2013 11:11:04 +0000 Social 7209@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I've been looking around for info on how to use my new 2013 macbook pro to show live video primarily, and images if possible, that are being recorded/photographed live from my GH2... essentially using my Macbook as a monitor.

There is a thread on PV that is a couple of years old which I have posted to, but through I'd open this up as a new topic as well, as I'm sure there are people out there in GH2 land who could do with this info as well. Here's a link to the original topic: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1207/gh2-live-streaming-solutions/p1

I'm hoping that in the 2 years since the original thread, the tech options have moved on. My macbook has thunderbolt, which, from experience connecting macbook to tv, works well with hdmi, and as thunderbolt connectivity can be used to transfer data from a hard drive back and forth, it must be a 2 way connection, so theoretically should allow for possible hdmi data being inputed to my mac.

I am relatively new to this and am trying to gather information, as this forum has been so informative in the past, I wanted to ask you guys what you would do in my situation? I would appreciate cheaper options if possible, primarily wired options as from scouring the web, there are issues with data signal interruptions and signal distance on wireless options.... plus wired is, I expect, considerably cheaper!

Can you help?

Thanks, Rob

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7348/nvidia-geforce-gtx-760- Tue, 25 Jun 2013 11:45:11 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7348@/talks/discussions image

You end up with 1152 total CUDA cores and 96 texture units. GK104’s back-end remains intact though, consisting of four ROP clusters that output eight 32-bit integer pixels per clock each, maxing out at 32. Similarly, four 64-bit memory controllers create a 256-bit aggregate interface.

At least at first, GeForce GTX 760s will sport 2 GB of GDDR5 memory operating at 1502 MHz, just like the GeForce GTX 670 and 680, pushing up to 192.2 GB/s. This is probably the 760's biggest advantage against GeForce GTX 660 Ti. A 192-bit memory bus limits that card's bandwidth to 144.2 GB/s, which hurts at higher resolutions with anti-aliasing cranked up.

GeForce GTX 760 also compensates for a less-complex GPU configuration through higher core clock rates. Its GK104 runs at 980 MHz (base), but is rated for a GPU Boost clock rate of 1033 MHz. That’s more aggressive than GeForce GTX 660 Ti and 670, both armed with 1344-shader incarnations of GK104 set at a 915 MHz base frequency. What you're going to see in the benchmarks is that some workloads tend to favor shader count, others react to the GPU's clock rate, and a third group enjoys memory bandwidth.

Disk Warrior http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8200/disk-warrior Sun, 22 Sep 2013 13:47:58 +0000 andyharris 8200@/talks/discussions Yesterday morning I noticed that my Mac had mounted by 12TB Raid drive twice. At the time I merely thought 'That's odd' Yesterday evening my Mac didn't mount mount the 12TB Raid (its some 8GB) full.

Disk Utility would see the drive and the partition (greyed out). It couldn't verify or repair the partition. fsck was having none of it either. It took all night for the Raid device to verify itself, and it claimed all the bytes were in the correct place and there were no disk errors.

My strategy of having a Raid6 device with 6 drives (double stripe and parity) for security was looking rather weak.

After a bit of googling, foruming and $112 dollars I downloaded Disk Warrior. 10 minutes later and all is good.

Atomos Ninja 2 external recording box http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8175/atomos-ninja-2-external-recording-box Fri, 20 Sep 2013 23:48:51 +0000 glenpinn 8175@/talks/discussions hi there, if this is in the wrong place, please can someone move it to the right section of the forum.

ok, i am in the process of upgrading camera's, either to a Sony VG900 or Panny AG-AC90 but still debating which one, based on built in features, additional features available, recording formats, and of coarse, price :)

i currently shoot video on my 2 cams in 1080/50p avchd mode, and i never use a tripod, all my video is shot freestyle using one of my own custom made hand held rigs (see my new thread in the Rig section) and my essential requirements for a video camera are (1) very good Image Stabilization and (2) very good Auto Focus system, they are an absolute must for me and my shooting style.

so with that said, these 2 cams are poles apart in those 2 requirements, because the VG900 has no onboard IS or AF it relies entirely on the selected lens for these options, where the AC90 has both on board.

the VG900 is 35mm full frame interchangeable lens where the AC90 has a much smaller sensor and a fixed lens (albeit a pretty good one i believe)

both shoot avchd @ 28Mbps and basically very similar to each other in every other detail, except cost, where the VG900 body alone is $3200 and i can buy a complete AC90 for $1800 and not buy any lenses, making it a very tempting avchd camera.

here is the interesting bit, i also had a desire to find a traditional type video camera that was also able to shoot/record in ProRes HQ or 422 mode at a very high bitrate (180 to 220Mbps) but there appears to be none out there, that was until i just found the following youtube video from a guy who shows a comparison between video shot on a Canon 5Dmk3 and a sony VG900 camera, however he shot/recorded the video on both camera's in ProRes 422 @ 220Mbps, and here i was wondering how he could record ProRes video on the VG900 when it only shoots AVCHD @ 28Mbps.

i just love the video from the VG900 in this clip, i know its youtube, but i personally think it puts the 5D to shame given all the hype some people put on that camera, and i would love to see the video clips straight from these 2 camera's.

i would also love to see video shot with an AC90 camera in this ProRes format, and compare it to the same video from the VG900.....

i then found out how, he used an Atomos Ninja 2 external hdmi recording device that takes the image from the camera's sensor, bypassing the built in avchd compression system, and records it in ProRes HQ or 422, and apparently it can also record in Avid DNxHD as well (not sure what bitrate)

http://www.videoguys.com.au/Shop/p/28401/atomos-ninja-2-portable-10-bit-field-recorder-educational-version-atomnja003edu.html?gclid=CLmAsJj-2bkCFYYwpAodqGQAJQ

so here i am again, seeking some more information, this time about this rather intriguing Ninja 2 recording device, which if it turns out to be as good as some seem to suggest, just may help me overcome my dilema in having to pick my next camera, where i have the choice of a traditional style AVCHD video cam that i prefer to use, and for around $650 i also get to have a portable ProRes recording system that i can use on any other video camera that has built in hdmi.

it also acts as an extended battery power supply for the camera (ships with 2 long life batteries) and it can be used as a preview screen as well, given it is about 4.5" in size (not sure of its quality tho)

can i please ask if there is anyone out there who may have one of these, know of anyone who has one, or can offer any thoughts on these Ninja 2 devices, or offer suggestions for other such recording devices.

the downside to this device for me is that it only records 1080p @ up to 30fps or 720p @ 50/60fps where i shoot always in 1080/50p mode on my current avchd cams, but this is not a problem, i just may decide to start shooting in 24p mode instead while shooting ProRes video.

any help/advice is much appreciated.

From Q8400 2.66ghz quad core to 3570k 3.4ghz quad core with 3.6-3.8ghz turbo and more sata ports in motherboard.

My old machine was working flawless but the new PC is freezing video playback constantly.

I just changed the motherboard and the processor, nothing else. And I sold the old motherboard and old processor to make some money, so can't undo the upgrade.

I started to do tests. I removed the pci-e GPU but the onboard GPU have same issue. I changed the motherboard from Asrock Z77 to Asus B75 and same issue. I change all possible bios settings and also bios upgrade, no solution. Everything in the PC works good, but video playback freezes in every software, a media player or a editing software. Just playback freezes, I can save the project, so I am working this way. Save the project restart computer and keep going on. Very annoying!

Anyone experiences issues with Ivy Bridge platform also? Or any suggestion to solve this? thanks!

Why I decided to relax and love AMD 7970 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7301/why-i-decided-to-relax-and-love-amd-7970 Thu, 20 Jun 2013 08:07:10 +0000 alcomposer 7301@/talks/discussions As many of you know on PV I am a bit of a Apple Fanboy. Its ok. I know. Anyway. I have just installed a 7970 for FCPX editing. Frankly I have never experienced this sort of acceleration before in my life (I do have a 5770- and FCP7 - so that was 'fast', kind of).

Frankly in FCPX I now find that you have to switch off the scrubber almost all the time, as it will scrub everything you touch. Before in my old system it would kind of play stuff back if it could- but now- ehh! Talk about annoying. Move mouse to change some value- ZzzzzzzZzzzip.

Oh well.

Maybe this is what After Effects was talking about? I don't know. But I do know I just watched my timeline background render itself while I made myself a coffee. (The project is 1 Hour long with 1000's of transitions - effects - animations - ken burns etc.

I think that I may get 2.

A bit like what that Edius guy said the other day on the forum: 'render? what is that?'

Live Streaming Solutions http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1207/live-streaming-solutions Tue, 18 Oct 2011 09:00:29 +0000 driftwood 1207@/talks/discussions The GH2 needs to be roaming so no fixed cable can be used. So wireless transmitter to receiver would be required, then something to get it into the laptop and then using ustream, telestream or whatever to live encode.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be well received. Many thanks.

Nvidia Geforce 780 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7013/nvidia-geforce-780 Mon, 20 May 2013 02:55:02 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7013@/talks/discussions image

The GTX 780 would be the flagship product of the 700 series and would be based on a cut down version of the GK110 core codenamed “GK110-300-A2″. This core would have 2304 cores and a 3 GB GDDR5 memory which would operate along a 384-bit memory interface. The core is maintained at 863 MHz with Turbo boost of 900 MHz while the memory operates at the reference 1502 MHz or 6 GHz effective clock speed. The GPU would be powered by an 8+6 Pin connectors which represent a 250W TDP while display connectors include Dual Link DVI, HDMI and a single display port.

From the benchmarks GeForce GTX 780 is almost 20% faster than the GeForce GTX 680

Expected price - $599

Progress now comes at a cost and is really slow.

Kavadni's Studio http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5460/kavadnis-studio Wed, 12 Dec 2012 02:37:53 +0000 kavadni 5460@/talks/discussions Studio / Garage / Shed .. What will I do with this space?

Bit the bullet financially and decided to build the biggest studio next to the house, that building regulations will allow.
Personal-View has been a wealth of information and ideas, In my web browser, I have 4 tabs permanently open, 'The TV Guide', 'Facebook', 'Vimeo', and 'Personal-View'

I hope you will all be forthcoming with your ideas, thoughts and advice as I attempt to turn it into a functional studio space.

I'll just start it with a couple of photos.

The slab, it was laid about 2 weeks ago.

We have contracted a local Dutch father and son team as the builders. The son's in charge, the father is nearing or past eligible retirement. They seem honest and proud, and unlike the larger organisations I looked at took the time to listen to specific requirements. There was no architect involved, the son designed it.

The basic design brief:

  1. The biggest legal building we can stick between the house and the fence.
Where I live, there is a regulation governing | land area | building area |
  2. Roof as high as allowable
  3. Roller door at the front
  4. Floor as flat as possible
  5. Light control considerations

I will update with the actual dimensions of the building when I find where I put the plans. The figures below are to best of memory.

I think it's 77sq/m, roughly 16m x 5m The internal roof height (a ceiling not) is 16 foot on the high side nearest the house and 12 foot nearest the boundary.

The second photo is after 2 and half days of work by the bricklayers

The photos are with my new stills camera of convenience, my iPhone

Basic PC Laptop for viewing .MTS on the go? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4194/basic-pc-laptop-for-viewing-.mts-on-the-go Thu, 09 Aug 2012 23:25:28 +0000 CFreak 4194@/talks/discussions I need some help from the P-V PC users. I have an idea, I can't find the answer to.

I am a mac user (editing setup w/bootcamp partition & WinXP) having a crazy idea: Since AVCHD is supposed to play so easily on a PC, old used PC laptops are so cheap on craigslist, Macs are so expensive, and I am almost broke...

What would a minimum PC requirement be (processor, speed, RAM, graphics chip, SD card slot, USB port for possible external drive) to only view hacked GH2 .mts files in the field? The GH2 manual and the posts here don't mention a minimum system to just view .mts files.

I am thinking of these uses only: Off load SD cards in an emergency. Check focus on a critical shot. Best shot selection at the end of the day (pre-injest, pre-editing).

Keeping it simple: No editing would need to be done on this laptop. It should be small and portable (12-13" screen) and therefore 1080x1920 is not needed. Screen resolution of at least 720x1280 should be fine. It is meant to take some abuse, from travelling, handeling, etc. If it breaks/gets stolen, no big deal, it was cheap off Craigslist (USA). Budget max. $200 USD (buying something older and used, but, not abused (yet :-))

Am I crazy or is this possible?

What could you recommend? Thanks!
