Atomos Ninja Star http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10128/atomos-ninja-star Wed, 09 Apr 2014 14:27:29 +0000 arum 10128@/talks/discussions Hopefully I am not the only one interested in this.

http://www.atomos.com/ninja-star/

From the press release.

The dimensions of the Ninja Star are slender at only 3.5″ wide, 2.3″ tall and 0.8″ deep and it weighs a fraction of a normal recorder at just 100grams (3.5 oz). The Ninja Star can record in both HD and Apple ProRes to capture pristine, 422 10-bit images straight from any camera sensor directly to inexpensive first generation CFast media with up to 3hrs Apple ProRes for $250. It also features Timecode and Start/Stop Trigger along with Audio Line-in.

I am less interested in 4k 8bit 420 in H264 than in 10bit 422 in a codec that keeps more shadow information. I made my mind when I saw this video a while ago.

There's a thread regarding the type of card it uses: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10110/cfast-storage/p1

New grading monitor is going to be.... http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5424/new-grading-monitor-is-going-to-be....- Sun, 09 Dec 2012 15:08:03 +0000 qwerty123 5424@/talks/discussions Seriously, this thing is 99% close to the proper color gamut of rec709. (It's seems the white balance is a little cool, but nothing major.)

"...As Apple released the third generation iPad we saw two different reports suggesting that this new device had very accurate color – even describing it as being close to a professional broadcast monitor. That claim seemed like something we should check out so we loaded up an iPad 3 with normal test images and borrowed a Photo Research PR-650 SpectraScan Colorimeter to test it. Testing a $500 consumer device that has only a brightness control with a $12,000 Colorimeter – Hey why not?" Rest of article is here: http://www.fxphd.com/blog/just-how-good-is-the-ipads-color/

Also I've attached some color gamut comparisons from this article: http://www.negativespaces.com/blog/2012/3/27/new-ipads-color-gamut.html

Other useful articles: - http://michaelcioni.tumblr.com/post/19561057034/ipad-going-invisible - http://www.displaymate.com/iPad_ShootOut_1.htm

I know there is an ipad 3 thread, Vitaliy, so feel free to close this if you think it fits there. But I think it's maybe worth talking about and having people share their experiences of using the ipad 3 as a color reference device both on set and during color correction. So what do you think people?

It's true that we can't really use it as a "grading monitor" in the sense of connecting it to Davinci, BUT it provides a way to check any color grading you do on something that is basically as reliable as a broadcast monitor: you'll just have to take the extra steps of exporting a file (like h.264) for viewing on the iPad. Sure it's not perfect, but otherwise you'll have to spend over $2.5K to get a "professional" monitor.

The "measured" is the iPad 3.

Switching from Mac To PC Questions http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13904/switching-from-mac-to-pc-questions Thu, 08 Oct 2015 04:46:26 +0000 Azo 13904@/talks/discussions Hey everybody I have some questions and need some advice. I have 2=Mac Pro's and and 2=15" MacBook Pro's one of which is a Retina. I am actually all in on the Mac side of things iPads, iPhones "bunch of apps", 2 Apple TV's, 3 Apple routers etc so this is a big deal for me to switch. Sadly the writing is on the wall for the Mac Pro. I waited patiently for them to come out with a new Mac Pro and when they did they came out with the Mac Pro that was not upgradeable. From a business point of view makes sense but for me its a bummer.

That being said my plan is to build a X99 system with an 8 core processor, 64 gigs of ram and probably the Nvidia Titan with 12gb of ram for DaVinci Resolve. My most current system is a 6 core 3.33ghz Mac Pro with 32gigs of ram, and a GTX980 unfortunately the Mac Pro chokes on 4K files with DaVinci Resolve. First question... How would I go about exporting a ProRes file from Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve I vaguely remember somebody saying that you can't. Is there some type of application or plugin that I can buy? Also in terms of playing the video files what video player would you guys recommend. Do you guys have any recommendations for virus scanners? I also need a program to backup all of my hard drives and SSD's so I would appreciate any suggestions.

This system will be used for Photography and Videography no video games. So any suggestions on motherboards, processors, sound cards, memory etc would be greatly appreciated.

OSEE Direct monitor http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12853/osee-direct-monitor- Wed, 22 Apr 2015 15:25:05 +0000 VideoVillage 12853@/talks/discussions In looking for a monitor for Video Village use for directs to watch, and for myself to use on color correction work I stumbled across www.oseedirect.com and their LCM156 monitor. I saw their video on YouTube
and was very impressed by the features this monitor offers. 178 x 178 degree viewing angle, waveform, vectorscope, 16 channels of audio metering, loop through HDSDI, HDMI in, and factory calibrated are just a few of the features this monitor offers. Most monitors that are 15.6" and offers these features run at the very least - $2,000, but no these guys are selling it for $649.00

Needless to say I put in the order and I got the monitor within a week. I was absolutely happy with the purchase. It's so much more than I expected, and my friend who has a Flanders is asking where to buy this monitor.

The only downside is that I need to get a custom box to mount it to my C-Stand, however I emailed OSEEDirect and they said they're going to be offering one soon - that they're developing - that will mount to C-Stands, come with a Hoodman, and a pelican style case. Needless to say I'm one happy customer and was also very excited to hear they're offering the same monitor in 10" and 23" later in the year. I can see myself buying the 10" (They estimated the price to be under $500!!!)

I wanted to share my experience and hopefully help this small company gain some traction. They have gained a lifetime customer with me.

Graphics card for video editing http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3823/graphics-card-for-video-editing Sun, 08 Jul 2012 04:55:09 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 3823@/talks/discussions My current understanding of the subject:

  1. It must be NVidia card, due to CUDA requirement by Adobe and DaVinci (and some plugins).
  2. Something relatively cheap, and not big and noisy.
  3. Maximum connections.
  4. Good memory size, important for DaVinci.

My idea is GT640 based cards.
Not very pricey. Do not consume big power. Usable in games, and some firms make versions with 10cm fans. Worst thing is that normal output config is 2xDVI, HDMI and VGA, I prefer to have DP instead of VGA.

But if you are using famous cheap 27" monitors it must be ok.

GT 640, 384 CUDA cores

Other suggestion is powerful GTX 670, 1344 CUDA cores cards, they also have more memory options, can be good for future.

GTX 680, 1536 CUDA cores

Slightly cheaper option, has almost the same performance as GTX 670 cards (I mean only video editing related tasks)

EVGA GeForce GTX570 HD 2560MB, about $320

CPU and System upgrade for Premiere Pro CC question http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12876/cpu-and-system-upgrade-for-premiere-pro-cc-question Sun, 26 Apr 2015 17:30:01 +0000 Brian_Siano 12876@/talks/discussions In a month or two, I'm in a good position to upgrade my computer system. Right now, I'm using Premiere Pro CS5, and running on an AMD Phenom II CPU. I can edit video, but hi-def stuff makes it chug.

I was planning on upgrading my CPU and Mobo around the Interl 4790k chip. That'd cost me about $500, and it'd set me up well with hi-def video. (Especially with multicamera editing.) And Tom's Hardware reports the 4790k as the best for PP in the Cloud. But my gut feeling is that, as we start to work with 4K, the 4790k may not be enough.

I've looked at the stats on Xeon chips, and the speed increase just doesn't seem to justify the added costs (esp. when adding in the costs of the mobo and new memory).

So I'd like to know if there's a configuration that'd really future-proof me, i.e., being able to to edit multicamera 4K streams, preview After Effects shots, etc.

Broadwell CPUs won't bring performance improvements http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10476/broadwell-cpus-wont-bring-performance-improvements Wed, 28 May 2014 07:09:11 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10476@/talks/discussions

Broadwell chip that Intel CEO Brian Krzanich promised to ship before the holiday season might not be the real McCoy. As you can imagine chip development takes a lot of time and effort and shrinking the Haswell architecture from 22nm and turning it into Broadwell at 14nm is not as easy as it sounds.

The original Broadwell design that got pushed back had to be slimmed down in order to get better yields. The chip can end up better than all Haswell chips that you can buy today in the mobile space, but Intel had more ambitious plans that could not realise in time.

After Broadwell the next ‘tock’ is called Skylake. Skylake was originally supposed to come in 2015 and should be based on a new architecture, but with the Broadwell delay Intel might postpone the follow-on chip

I don't mind losing a bit of CPU grunt in exchange for reduced size and improved battery life. The biggest hurdle I've found is finding a competitive screen. I had previously narrowed it down to the new Dell XPS 13 and Acer R13, but the Dell has issues with firmware locked adaptive brightness, and the Acer had horrible viewing angles. Beyond those, it seems like the ASUS UX303 line, specifically the LN (now LB in the US) version with the Nvidia GPU, is the best match for me. The ones listed in the title are roughly the same, just different naming for different regions and a different LCD. Here's a good review with specs:

I really can't find any faults as far as specs, performance, or battery life. Only thing left is to see the screen in person. Is there anything else with similar or better specs at a similar price ($1299 USD w/1800p display + 512GB SSD) that can compare? I'd rather not go back to Apple, as the only reason I bought the rMBP 15 was for the hardware, and I haven't warmed up to OS X or the gimped flavor of Windows run in Parallels and Boot Camp.
