I know there are other Panasonics that shoot 120 but I can't find it in any of the specs for the newer models.

What I want is either a camera that gives manual control in that mode or maybe a mirrorless that I can put a manual lens on.

Any suggestions?

PR

(Newark, New Jersey--October 8, 2013) Panasonic has announced delivery and pricing for the AG-AC8PJ, an AVCCAM shoulder-mount with exceptional ergonomics and functionality. The AG-AC8PJ, with 1080p recording capabilities, is ideal for shooting weddings, business conferences, documentaries, sporting events (including 720p at 8Mbs, optimal for use with leading coaching analysis systems), exhibits and government activities.

The AC8PJ will ship in October with a suggested list price of $1450.00. The camcorder’s advanced functionality includes a wide angle 28mm/F1.8 lens that allows the operator to fit more people and background into the frame, especially useful in narrow spaces. A powerful 21X optical/50x super-high resolution zoom facilitates shooting scenes that are difficult to access. Intelligent auto (iA) resolution technology enables acquisition at high zoom rates while preserving the image resolution. A 1/4.5 type high-sensitivity sensor ensures bright and sharp images even in the most dimly lit scenes.

With dual SD card slots and the capability to record on both cards simultaneously, the AC8PJ’s Relay Auto Switch functionality provides dependable back-up recording or the ability to switch from one card to the other for extended recording times.

The AC8PJ offers a wide range of recording models including:1080/60p [Max. 28Mbps/VBR], (1920x1080/60p); PH [Max. 24Mbps/VBR], (1920x1080/60i); HA [Ave. 17Mbps/VBR], (1920x1080/60i); HG [Ave. 13Mbps/VBR], (1920x1080/60i); HE [Ave. 5Mbps/VBR], (1440x1080/60i); PM [Ave. 8Mbps/VBR], (1280x720/60p); and SA [Ave. 9Mbps/VBR], (720x480/60i).

Sophisticated professional capabilities include Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS), which helps compensate for wide variations in exposure in a contrast heavy scene, from light to dark; and a Focus in Red function that shows the sharp edges of a subject in red, making it stand out more easily, allowing a shooter to find focus even faster in some situations when manual focus is in use.

Input control commands can be made by the AC8PJ’s integrated 3-inch touch panel LCD and Smart Touch. The camcorder is Eye-Fi™ SD card compatible, making the transfer of recordings via a wireless network to devices like a PC or a file-sharing site like YouTube or Vimeo fast, simple and convenient. Interfaces include HDMI Type A, Microphones (stereo mini), Headphone (stereo mini), USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Host/Device, AV, and Video Component.

Other key features include a powerful 5-Access Hybrid Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S) that thoroughly suppresses blurring all the way from wide-angle to powerful zoom shots; and a manual, multi-purpose lens ring that provides fine adjustments and precise control of Focus, Zoom, Iris, White Balance and Shutter speed (a fast, accurate auto focus is also available). An illuminating LED ring allows recording verification and serves as a tally light to make shooting smoother. Other functions encompass the ability to back up hours of footage to an external portable HDD via USB; a Level Function mode that automatically detects and corrects the tilting of captured images; and a large lens hood that blocks light more effectively to reduce lens flare.

The AC8PJ weighs only five pounds, and measures 8.07 inches (W) x 8.54 inches (H) x 18.85 inches (D). The camcorder captures still images of 16:9, 20.4 megapixels [6016 x 3384 resolution], or a 4:3, 15.1 megapixels [4480 x 3360 resolution] still image. In simultaneous record mode, it can take a 16:9, 9.4 megapixels [4096 x 2304] still image or a 4:3, 1.4 megapixels [1440 x 1080] still image. A new high-performance stereo microphone is included, and standard accessories comprise an AC Adaptor, AC Cable, Rechargeable Battery Pack [2900 mAh/Lithium-ion], AV Cable, USB Cable, External Stereo Microphone, Lens Cap and Eye Cup.

Specs:

  • 160 degrees anti fog wide lens
  • 720p30, 720p60, 720p120
  • 1080p60, 1080p30

Designed for professionals and consumers alike, the aerodynamic iON camera line features a number of significant industry firsts, including Wi-Fi connectivity and free cloud storage. The unique iON PODZ™ system—thin, circular discs that attach to the back of the basic camera, adding virtually no weight or volume—extends the capabilities of the iON camera lines. The Wi-Fi capabilities of the iON Wi-Fi PODZ work with the iON app for iOS and Android devices, allowing users to control camera functions and settings, preview the scene before shooting, instantly replay recordings, and immediately upload footage to Facebook, YouTube and other social networks.

The new Air Pro 3 Wi-Fi records HD video up to 60 frames per second at 1080p, with dual streaming to enable users to simultaneously “shoot and share” their recordings. A new, 12-megapixel image sensor offers up to 4000x3000-pixel still-image resolution with superior light sensitivity and wider dynamic range, even in challenging low-light situations. The camera’s “anti-shake” feature minimizes the effects of vibration for crisper images, and its built-in microphone is equipped with noise reduction to minimize the effects of wind and other distracting sounds on the audio track.

Additional new features of the Air Pro 3 Wi-Fi include extra-long, 2.5+-hour battery life and a custom-made, fog-free lens with improved light transmission for top-quality videos and stills, and a 160-degree angle of view that can be customized for tighter 140- or 150-degree angles using the iON iOS or Android app. While retaining the sleek, cylindrical shape of the previous Air Pro models, the camera casing is redesigned and boasts improved underwater capabilities up to 49 feet, with no outer housing required. The addition of a pro-grade metal ¼” tripod screw mount assures stability when used with conventional mounting systems.

Press release

LUMIX DMC-FZ70 is packed full of the best multimedia technologies Panasonic makes. Optically the FZ70 delivers from its amazing 20mm wide-angle to 1,200mm (60X) long zoom, making it a category class leader*. With F2.8-5.9 lens brightness, both video and photos will appear bright under low light conditions. Optical image stabilization assures that both long zoom photos and videos are sharp and free from blur. The FZ70 offers amazing Full HD 1080/60i video recording, thanks to Panasonic's experience as a world leader in professional broadcast video. It boasts crystal clear audio due to a unique microphone that eliminates ambient noise and wind sound with the stunning clarity of Dolby® Digital. This unique microphone even zooms with the optical zoom to more precisely zero in on the audio coming from your subject.

  1. Category Class Leading Super Long Zoom Lens
With a 60X optical zoom (20 to 1,200mm), the lens in the FZ70 is the widest and longest zoom in its class*. Its stunningly versatile ultra-wide 20mm to 1,200mm range makes it possible to capture dynamic landscapes, wildlife and almost any scene when traveling. At 20mm the lens captures a nearly 140% wider angle of view compared with a 24mm lens. Comprised of 14 elements in 12 groups, including 6 aspherical lenses with 9 aspherical surfaces and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses, this advanced lens unit delivers exceptional optical performance by suppressing distortion at the wide end and color bleeding at the tele end.

  2. A Little Extra Zoom Kick
Thanks to its Intelligent Resolution technology, the FZ70 can extend the zoom ratio up to 120X equivalent while maintaining the picture quality. An optional optical lens adapter can further extend the FZ70s range.

  3. Amazingly Clear Zoom Microphone with Dolby(R) Digital Audio Quality
Recording video with the FZ70 is easy, but what's really amazing is its ability to capture audio clearly. The recorded videos come with the highly realistic Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator and its sound quality is further improved in the DMC-FZ70 thanks to a newly developed Wind Shield Zoom Microphone that minimizes wind noise by approx. 70% compared to prior models. Externally, the sealed structure prevents wind from hitting the microphone directly and the draft structure suppresses retention of air internally. As a result, the sound is clear and comfortable to listen to even it if was recorded on a windy day.

  4. Full HD Video Recording
The FZ70 records full-HD 1920 x 1080 videos in both AVCHD and MP4 formats. A special, separate button on the top lets you instantly start recording videos while shooting photos without having to make any extra changes. The Creative Video Mode lets you adjust the shutter speed and aperture any way you like when shooting videos. The powerful 60x optical zoom with POWER O.I.S. is available in video recording as well.

  5. New 16.1-Megapixel High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine Deliver High Speed Response and High Picture Quality A newly integrated 16.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor and the advanced image processor Venus Engine feature high speed response and high quality image even in high sensitivity recording. This contributes to enabling high speed burst shooting at 9 fps in full resolution* and the Light Speed AF to catch the most fleeting shooting opportunities together with the quick start-up time of less than a second.

  6. Power Optical Image Stabilization with Active Mode
The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) effectively suppresses hand-shake vibration. The angular width that the FZ70 can compensate for is more than 200% wider than previous models at the tele-end, which allows for superior handheld 1,200mm super telephoto shooting. The Active Mode equipped allows for active video recording at wide angle such as shooting while walking without causing deterioration of image quality.

  7. In-Camera Creative Controls and Retouch
The Creative Control and Creative Retouch feature a total of 15 filter effects: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter and One Point Color. The Creative Control lets users shoot with a filter effect while evaluating how it makes a difference in the picture: this can be used for video recording, as well*. The Creative Retouch enables applying a filter effect on the picture even after shooting in camera.

  8. Creative Panoramic Effects
With the Creative Panorama function, it is possible to shoot a horizontal or vertical panoramic image with consequent shots taken by overlaying the previous picture and to put on a filter effect of Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Old Days, Cross Process and One Point Color.

  9. Amazing Low Light Sensor Response.
While the FZ70 offers a bright F2.8-5.9 lens, it's the new 16.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor that cuts noise by 10-15% and dramatically improves images in high-sensitivity shooting. Together with the Venus Engine, it elevates the response, sensitivity and image quality of the LUMIX DMC-FZ70 to even higher levels.

  10. iA Plus Mode
In the iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode, the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments in both photo and video recording. In addition, the iA Plus Mode enables you to adjust defocusing area, exposure compensation and white balance by just moving the slider.

Panasonic LX7 Photo topic http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8244/panasonic-lx7-photo-topic Thu, 26 Sep 2013 09:41:25 +0000 Dusty42 8244@/talks/discussions Panasonic LX7 uses wrong ISO in photo mode.

In the last few days, I was testing some pano photos with the camera and found that the camera used wrong ISO to take photos. I set the camera to all manual settings (f2.8, 1/500s, ISO 80, WB to Daylight, focus mode to manual) and shot a series of 8 photos. 5 photos were taken at specified ISO 80 and 3 photos were taken at ISO 125. The focal length was set to 50mm and the focus was set at hyperfocal distance according to the screen. All the photos were taken outdoor. The following day, I tested more pano shots indoor. I took a series of 7 photos and 3 out of the photos were taken at ISO 125. The settings were f2.8, 1/10s, ISO 80, Daylight, 50mm. I attached the first series of photos for you to take a look. All the photos were resized to fit PV. All photos were taken in portrait orientation at 3mpixel and the camera was on a tripod.

By the way, it's not possible to set ISO 125 in photo mode that I know of. There is no "auto" ISO setting either. This is a MAJOR bug on their flagship compact. Panasonic needs to fix the problem quickly.

Panasonic XS3 small compact http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7551/panasonic-xs3-small-compact Thu, 18 Jul 2013 04:09:47 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7551@/talks/discussions image

Brief specs:

  • 14.1Mp 1/2.3" sensor
  • 24-120mm lens, 6 elements in 5 groups with 3 aspherical lenses

PR:

Panasonic’s new DMC-XS3 offers users the ultimate in compact style and substance, combining superb camera performance with stunning design. Carefully designed from every angle, the XS3 is a small enough to slip inside a pocket, yet packed with technology to ensure those spontaneous moments are captured beautifully. With 14.1 megapixels and at just 14mm thick, the XS3 is the perfect accessory for anyone taking regular pictures on the go.

Akin to a traditional analog camera design yet with an added futuristic appeal, the XS3 looks stylish and edgy. Yet the appeal of the XS3 goes more than skin deep with a technical specification to be proud of.

Superb Performance
The XS3 incorporates a 14.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor for clear, crisp images even in low- light situations. Perfect for using at parties, at nighttime or for pre-dawn walks in the park for example, the XS3 ensures low-light situations are catered for. The advanced image processor Venus Engine further enhances images with advanced noise reduction. Together, these technologies realize high speed consecutive shooting and full-HD video recording. The XS3 also enjoys a quick start-up and Light Speed AF to catch the most fleeting shooting opportunities.

Comprising of 6 elements in 5 groups with 3 aspherical lenses with 5 aspherical surfaces in its unit, the F2.8 fast 24mm wide-angle LUMIX DC VARIO lens in the DMC-XS3 features a 5x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 24-120mm) despite its stunningly slim, compact body profile. The 24mm ultra wide angle lens gives photographers a wider range of composition possibilities with approx. 213% larger viewing space compared to that of 35mm camera. It captures more subjects in a limited focusing distance and is good for shooting group portraits, indoor objects or dynamic landscapes. For distant subjects, the Intelligent Zoom can be used for the extended magnification to 10x by combining the digital zoom with minimum deterioration of image quality.

Creativity Catered For
Aspiring photographers can take advantage of a wide array of creative and artistic features. With the Creative Panorama function, it is possible to shoot a horizontal / vertical panoramic image with consequent shots taken by overlaying the previous picture and to put on a filter effect of Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Old Days, Cross Process and One Point Colour.

The Creative Control and Creative Retouch features a total of 13 filter effects – Retro, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Old Days and One Point Colour. The Creative Control lets users shoot with a filter effect while checking how it affects the picture. The Creative Retouch allows users to apply a filter effect on the picture even after shooting in camera – perfect for transforming a shot post-shooting.

Full HD Please
Fully versatile, the DMC-XS3 provides 1920 x 1080 full HD video recording in MP4 format for effortless playback on a computer or other portable electronic devices without having to convert the files. Inherently user friendly, a dedicated button enables users to instantly start recording videos while shooting photos without having to make any extra settings, making it extremely convenient to switch between photo and video shooting instantly.

The popular iA (Intelligent Auto) can also be used in video recording and users can enjoy max. 4x zooming in video recording .

Beautiful Images Thanks to iA and MEGA O.I.S
The Intelligent Auto (iA) mode can be set with one-touch for the reduction of misshots. With iA it is easy to take great photos anywhere, at any time.

The MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) is integrated in the iA mode for to suppress hand-shake. Apart from the digital image correction, MEGA O.I.S. corrects a jolt of light axis by shifting the O.I.S. lens unit to offset it, resulting in clear, sharp images, without any digital affect or deterioration on the image.

In addition, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure and Face Detection automatically work for users to get the best result.

With a host of cutting-edge technologies, and a beautifully designed form, the XS3 offers the perfect combination of style and performance. The DMC-XS3 will be available from September in a choice of two colours.

the AC90 seems like a great cam, but some people reckon the sensor is way small, and not as good as in other cams, yet the VG900 is a full fram interchangeable lens camera that seems to be pretty good on paper, unfortunately its Image Stabilization is lens dependent, and i believe AF is only usable on E mount lenses when they are wide open.

can anyone offer me any advice, or offer other camera suggestions to me, as i can go up to about $3000usd for a new cam.

cheers

oh, BTW why is there still this need to have Pal & NTSC recording systems these days, why cant they just have one system and be done with it, and i ask because with HD video these days (AVCHD especially) i rarely ever output to bluray even with wedding videos, most clients just want their video edited nicely with some nice touches (efects) here and there, and the output m2ts file put onto an external hdd for playback on a HD tv, as most newer HD tv's these days have built in media players via usb.

it wont bother me to buy a ntsc camera, the more fps i can shoot in the better.

Are the days of consumer camcorders coming to an end? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4801/are-the-days-of-consumer-camcorders-coming-to-an-end Wed, 03 Oct 2012 10:55:48 +0000 mpgxsvcd 4801@/talks/discussions I hadn't looked at what options there were for camcorders in a long time because even 2 years ago m4/3s had surpassed them at a lower price. So I decided to see if the camcorders had progressed at all since then.

I looked up the latest consumer camcorders from Canon and Panasonic. It looks like the HF G10 is the latest from Canon and the HC-X900M is the latest from Panasonic. Both cameras are well over $1100. The HC-X900M has 1080p @ 60 FPS but lacks true 24p and the G10 has 24p but lacks 1080p @ 60 FPS as far as I could tell.

Canon claims that they have significantly increased the pixel size at the cost of high resolution photos. However, their 2.75um pixel size is well short of the 3.75um pixel size that m4/3s can offer. Even their lenses are not really that special when you consider how small their sensors are. They are fairly bright wide open F1.5-F1.8 but neither of them goes wider than about 30mm.

So why would anyone still buy a camcorder? I just don't get it. My friend just bought an FZ200 for stills and absolutely refuses to even try the video because she is convinced that it could never be as good as a camcorder. I guess that is why these camcorders are still around. The perception of the general public is still that a camcorder is best for video.

So am I missing something. Are there things that a camcorder does that a GH3 can't?

Garmin VIRB action cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7848/garmin-virb-action-cameras Wed, 21 Aug 2013 20:46:15 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7848@/talks/discussions image

Garmin International Inc., the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced VIRB, its first true HD 1080p action camera series. From action sports to family vacations, VIRB combines a unique feature set that makes it easier than ever to capture life’s memories. VIRB features a rugged and waterproof (IPX-7) housing, so there is no extra case necessary to withstand the elements. The unique 1.4-inch Chroma™ color display makes setup and playback a breeze and uses minimal power so VIRB can record up to three hours of true HD (1080p) video on one charge. On-board video enhancement features such as digital image stabilization and lens distortion correction ensure that footage recorded with VIRB will look great, even before editing. VIRB can capture high quality still photos while the video camera is recording. VIRB Elite incorporates all these features, plus has built-in WiFi, data sensors and a high-sensitivity GPS. Both VIRB and VIRB Elite feature ANT+™ connectivity for remote control functionality with other Garmin products, and for data transfer with other fitness sensors.

VIRB has a sleek, aerodynamic design that makes it fun and simple to record HD video- just move the slider forward to record. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery can record up to three hours of HD (1080p) video with one charge, and can be easily changed on the go. The WideVü lens captures all the action, and the high-resolution Chroma display makes it easy to change menu settings, set-up and playback shots, but has reflective technology so it doesn’t drain the battery. The 1.4-inch screen uses ambient light (instead of a battery-draining backlight) to illuminate the screen and make it easy to see in bright sunlight.

VIRB is durable enough to capture even the most extreme activities right out of the box. With the rugged external housing, VIRB has an IPX-7 waterproof rating (can withstand accidental immersion in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes).

VIRB can even take stills while recording video. VIRB also has a micro HDMI output for convenient video playback and a microSD slot that can hold up to 64GB card (64GB microSD card can hold over seven hours of 1080p video).

VIRB Elite incorporates all these features, as well as high-sensitivity GPS, accelerometer, altimeter and WiFi. WiFi capabilities allow users to connect to the free mobile applications for iPhone and Android. VIRB Elite comes equipped with specific activity profiles so users can track location, speed, elevation, heart rate (monitor sold separately) and more while recording. This data can be reviewed right on the device, or can be embedded into their video during the editing process.

Additionally, in Ski Mode, the VIRB Elite is able to recognize the difference between going down the mountain and going up the ski lift. In this setting, VIRB Elite automatically turns on and starts recording when going down the mountain, and then goes into standby mode once on the ski lift. This mode saves battery and memory space, and keeps the user from forgetting to record when going down the mountain. This allows VIRB Elite to record all the action while users focus on their activity.

VIRB allows many current Garmin customers to take advantage of the Garmin ecosystem. In addition to the optional accessory remote (available Q1 2014), the Edge® 810, fēnix™, quatix™, Oregon® 600 series, and many more can control VIRB allowing users to start and stop recording and take stills right on the device through ANT+ wireless communication (for the full list of device compatibility, visit garmin.com/virb). Also through ANT+, users are able to control several connected VIRB devices. Just move the slider forward to record on the master device, and all the other connected VIRB devices will record as well. VIRB Elite is compatible with other sensors with ANT+ connectivity such as the heart rate monitor, cadence sensor and tempe™ temperature sensor. This data can then be embedded into the video during the editing process, or viewed on the display of VIRB Elite.

To complement VIRB Elite, Garmin is launching a mobile application for preview, playback and remote functionality, along with a free desktop software application to edit and upload VIRB and VIRB Elite videos. With this software, users can easily edit their footage and embed sensor data in the video, then share with family and friends or upload to social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

VIRB and VIRB Elite will be widely available for purchase in September 2013. VIRB MRP is $299.99, and VIRB Elite MRP is $399.99. VIRB is the latest solution from Garmin’s outdoor segment, which focuses on developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ outdoor experiences. Whether it’s golfing, hiking, hunting or geocaching, Garmin outdoor devices are becoming essential tools for outdoor enthusiasts of all levels. Panasonic HS700/TM700 codec http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/979/panasonic-hs700tm700-codec Sun, 18 Sep 2011 23:52:57 +0000 samuelcabral 979@/talks/discussions
I've searched a lot but i didn't found any clue about it.
As the Gh's... i think the Panasonic would put a lot of more attention on the codec of the HS700. Any chance to use the knowledge with the gh's on hs700?

Sorry if my comment is too much off-topic....its just curiosity. (and sorry for my poor english vocabulary too)]]>

Best/affordable camcorder for documentary work? best video point and shoot? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7581/bestaffordable-camcorder-for-documentary-work-best-video-point-and-shoot Tue, 23 Jul 2013 02:15:57 +0000 inhousegoods 7581@/talks/discussions I'm going to be filming a documentary in Vietnam for a month, however I want to be discreet as possible. No rigs, no monopods, no tripods. Simply going to try to do everything handheld, so image stabilization is a must. I only have knowledge on true cinema cameras (red, bmcc, hdslrs) and really no knowledge on other camcorders (sony, panasonic, jvc). So I wanted to ask what my options are, would love to have audio as well, however I can always bring a separate sound recorder

In addition, I'll most likely have a point and shoot for "unsafe" areas, wanted to see what my options were for that as well. Again, image stabilization is a must. Was leaning towards the sony systems, rx1, rx100. Or even the bmcc pocket if there was a lens that had IS

Any input is appreciated! - Thank you!
