"The dual camera module size is 21.0 mm x 10.6 mm x 6.3 mm thick. Based on our initial X-rays it appears the wide-angle camera uses optical image stabilization (OIS), while the telephoto camera does not (the same configuration as iPhone 7 Plus).

The wide-angle Sony CIS has a die size of 6.29 mm x 5.21 mm (32.8 mm2). This compares to a 32.3 mm2 die size for iPhone 7’s wide-angle CIS.

We do note a new Phase Pixel pattern, but the big news is the absence of surface artifacts corresponding to the through silicon via (TSV) arrays we’ve seen for a few years. A superficial review of the die photo would suggest it’s a regular back-illuminated (BSI) chip. However, we’ve confirmed it’s a stacked (Exmor RS) chip which means hybrid bonding is in use for the first time in an Apple camera!"

Confidently capture professional standard footage with Canon's new LEGRIA HF G26

Canon announced the launch of the LEGRIA HF G26, a Full HD camcorder to satisfy video enthusiasts' creative needs and instill confidence when capturing content. Taking filmmaking to the next level, the compact and easily portable LEGRIA HF G26 offers a 28.8mm wide-angle lens with 20x optical zoom, superb optics, low-light capability and 8-blade circular aperture, which can create beautiful circular bokeh effects. Video enthusiasts and filmmakers alike can capture exceptional Full HD 50p footage for all creative pursuits with the simple, yet powerful, LEGRIA HF G26.

Cutting-edge features for precise, high-quality footage

With a range of cutting-edge features, the LEGRIA HF G26 assures precise and high-quality shooting in the most challenging of conditions. The Intelligent Image Stabiliser (IS) compensates for 5 axes of camera movement, which is crucial for steady filming whilst on the move and capturing shake-free smooth footage even at extreme zoom, thanks to Powered IS. To support Full HD clarity, the LEGRIA HF G26 features Instant Autofocus for the rapid and precise identification of the subject position and distance. Capturing pin sharp Full HD video has never been easier.

Using the three-position switch, users can easily alternate between Manual, Auto and Cinema modes without changing individual settings. With up to 20x optical zoom, the LEGRIA HF G26 enables the creative capture of video from wide shots to extreme close ups, capturing even distant subjects in brilliant Full-HD quality. Using a Wide Dynamic Range of 600 per cent and Highlight Priority looks, the LEGRIA HF G26 records Full HD 50p at 35Mbps delivering high-quality footage, while evenly distributing tones and managing areas of brightness. This produces beautiful video footage straight from the camcorder.

The combination of a 2.91MP 1/2.84-Type HD CMOS Pro sensor and DIGIC DV4 processor delivers incredible light sensitivity, contrast and wide dynamic range without compromising Full 1080p HD. This allows filmmakers to capture content in conditions with light as low as 0.1 lux, ideal for video enthusiasts capturing nighttime documentaries. Similarly, the LEGRIA HF G26 offsets overexposure in bright conditions with its built-in ND Filter reducing the amount of light that reaches the sensor.

Easy operation and compact design

The customisable settings empower video enthusiasts to mould the LEGRIA HF G26 to their own shooting preferences; perfect for those committed to shooting in a specific style. With highly responsive and state-of-the-art controls, the LEGRIA HF G26 is a compact, simple-to-use, hand-held device that is perfect for capturing on the go.  Fitted with a professional grade zoom rocker, lens ring with fingertip light sensitivity and custom dial and buttons, the LEGRIA HF G26 provides content creators with maximum artistic control when shooting.

A highly responsive 3.0-inch capacitive touch screen ensures the image can be framed perfectly, with the ability to adjust tracking, focus and exposure for a high-quality outcome. For full visibility when capturing footage, especially in bright conditions, aspiring film makers can adjust the 1.56 million dot electronic tilting viewfinder up to 45° for low-angle shooting and to reduce glare. This is particularly useful for video enthusiasts capturing content in variable lighting conditions, such as whilst travelling or on outdoor shooting locations. This simple operation, and compact design, make the LEGRIA HF G26 suited for moments when mobility and speed are essential.

Simple workflow, advanced recording

Whether simply distributing the stunning 1080p/50 footage straight from the video camera or editing later, the LEGRIA HF G26 unlocks choice and workflow flexibility. Simultaneous AVCHD and MP4 recording gives you the freedom to capture Full HD resolution up to 35Mbps MP4/28Mbps AVCHD and as low as 3Mbps MP4/5Mbps AVCHD. With several advanced recording options, such as slow and fast capture with a maximum speed of 1200x, the LEGRIA HF G26 provides reassurance that you will never miss a moment.

A dependable companion for any filming, the LEGRIA HF G26 delivers peace of mind with dual SD card slots for continuous shooting and thorough back up. The LEGRIA HF G26 boasts a HDMI terminal for a range of advanced interfaces, including connectivity to a 3.5mm headphone and 3.5mm mic jack, plus Mini Advanced Shoe input. The built-in headphone output with 16 volume settings for accuracy and the microphone input, both enhance audio functionality to support video enthusiasts recording interviews and vlogs. With this extensive range of features, content creators can confidentially fulfill their creative needs.

Pricing and availability

The LEGRIA HF G26 will be available from April 2018 with an RSP of £899.99/€1089.99.

Sony FDR-X1000V: Better than GoPro? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13387/sony-fdr-x1000v-better-than-gopro Wed, 15 Jul 2015 09:21:45 +0000 markr041 13387@/talks/discussions Testing sites agree that the 4K video from the Sony FDR X1000V has noticeably higher resolution than that from the GoPro Hero 4 Black, and that this is in part due to the higher bitrate (100Mbps versus 50 or 60 Mbps).

The Sony also has other advantages over the GoPro:

  1. You can use it without the waterproof case, and it still has water resistance. The body has a standard tripod hole. The GoPro outside the waterproof case cannot be mounted on anything without an extra cost frame, and it is not weather resistant at all.

  2. The Sony built-in mic is stereo, and the audio recording in XAVC S mode is uncompressed and higher (in specs) than CD quality. The fact that you can use the camera without the waterproof housing, even in the rain, also means that the audio will not be muffled.

  3. Digital stabilization in HD mode.

  4. Buit-in GPS (accurate time automatically).

  5. Time code.

The attributes that are worse:

  1. Lower dynamic range, although this has not been as systematically tested, with most reviewers using the default Sony ‘Vivid’ color setting, which ups saturation and contrast (crushed blacks). It may be that in “Natural’ mode the dynamic range is better.

  2. Bluish tint (as opposed to the GoPro yellow tint).

I have also found that the Sony, like all darn Sony cameras, overexposes. That can contribute to blown highlights and video that looks like it has low dynamic range.

Indeed, the out-of-camera 4K video does not look very good, precisely because of overexposure and the blue. But both can be corrected, either in post or by using AE shift in the camera along with manual WB.

I shot a test video in 4K at 100Mbps using the Sony in its default modes. I was horrified by the video. But, by merely reducing luminance and correcting WB in post (using a white reference) I thought the resulting video looked very good. The video was shot while it was raining and used without the waterproof case (you can hear the drops and see in one clip a droplet on the lens). The audio quality can be assessed as well, with passing cars (l to r) and bird calls and songs.

Here is the test video I shot and edited (as described above - no grading, just correcting):

To give an idea of the difference between the ooc video and the end result, here are two frame grabs: one from the ooc video and the other corrected in post (from the uploaded video):

Canon G1X Mark II, a 1.5" sensor RX10 competitor http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9594/canon-g1x-mark-ii-a-1.5-sensor-rx10-competitor Tue, 11 Feb 2014 21:49:23 +0000 imdjay 9594@/talks/discussions image

Specs:

  • Large 1.5-type Canon CMOS sensor
  • 12.8 Megapixel images (3:2) and multi-aspect shooting
  • Fast f/2 aperture and a max ISO 12,800
  • Ultra-wide 24mm, 5x zoom lens
  • DIGIC 6 processing and Intelligent IS

  • Dual Control Rings and touch-screen operation
  • Wi-Fi with remote shooting and Image Sync
  • Optional electronic viewfinder
  • 14-bit RAW
  • $799 price

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II raises performance and quality to new heights in a compact, brilliant design. Featuring a huge, 1.5-inch 12.8 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, a powerful DIGIC 6 Image Processor and an all-new 5x wide-angle optical zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilizer and a circular, 9-blade aperture for stunning blurred backgrounds, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II delivers the outstanding image quality you would expect with a digital SLR camera but in a portable, Wi-Fi and NFC enabled package.

Canon 1.5-inch, 12.8 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
Almost as large as the APS-C CMOS sensor found in many EOS digital SLRs, and bigger than those found in 4/3 system cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II's sensor sets the standard for sensitivity and resolving power in compact cameras. Each cell area is 4.5x the size of those found in 1/1.7 type sensors and is thus able to capture more light at the pixel level. This means better detail, even at higher ISOs, with minimal noise and distortion and, thanks to the sensor's wide cell pitch, breathtaking dynamic range. The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera natively captures images in the 3:2 aspect ratio, which is the same as Canon EOS SLR cameras. The PowerShot G1 X Mark II also features a new Aspect Ratio function, enabling RAW image capturein both 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratios while maintaining the same angle of view.

What GoPro optics are the same? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16485/what-gopro-optics-are-the-same Tue, 21 Feb 2017 01:33:14 +0000 Brumbazz 16485@/talks/discussions Does anyone know, what GoPro optics are the same: focal length, sensor, and distortion?

My guess is that most GoPro cameras have similar optics and maybe even similar sensors (at least in size), and that the differences mainly lie in processing and/or a sensor update with identical resolution. Without actually knowing, I expect GoPros 3-5 and Session 4-5 to be identical, maybe even including the budget GoPro Hero.

Can anyone confirm, or refute any of this?

I only have the Hero4 Black myself, but I have had most of the GoPro cameras at one point.

It comes with a water proof housing, 2 batteries and lots of mounts.

Here's some 1080p60 sample videos that I took today. Before you watch the videos, you'll need to keep in mind that the camera is $63. If you want an action camera with very high quality, something like the Yi 4K+ is recommended.

Best camera with fixed (e.g. non-interchangeable) lens? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17115/best-camera-with-fixed-e.g.-non-interchangeable-lens Thu, 08 Jun 2017 14:55:15 +0000 StudioDCCreative 17115@/talks/discussions So, I've found out that one of my favourite events to shoot at has unified their camera policy for non-media accredited photographers (like me). While this eliminates a lot of historic confusion about what kind of camera was allowed (for some years it was the amount of zoom, for others it was total focal length, for some it was size of camera, etc...) the new policy is absolutely inane: "no removable lens".

I've not even begun to look at cameras without a removable lens to figure out which ones are any good. The ones I'm currently aware of that might quality for "still moderately decent" are the LX10/100, the RX10MkXX (unsure which models are any good), RX100mkXX (same), and a whole bunch of 1/3" cameras like the G9X and such, which I'm not really interested in since their still photo quality is IMO pretty crap.

So, for those of you who have actually USED these cameras for anything, which stand out as worthy of consideration as a great value for an excellent image? I'm not as concerned with having a superzoom as I am with the following:

  1. Great photo and video image quality (e.g. RAW, 422 8-bit 4k or even better for 1080p only cameras, good codecs, good colour science).
  2. A very fast aperture, f/2.8 for an APS-C sensor or f/2 for anything smaller.
  3. An intuitive UI including button location, body feel in hand, etc.
  4. VERY fast power-on-to-shoot time.
  5. Good manual focusing, or failing that, stunning in-body AF with touchscreen tracking.
  6. The ability to take filters.

I'm not as concerned with:

A. Battery life. B. Weight or size, although something enjoyable to shoot is important. C. An EVF (so long as it has a tilt-screen at the very least). D. An ultra-ultra wide end (wider than 24mm full-frame) or a super-telephoto (greater than 100mm full-frame equivalent) is not necessary for me, although it would be a plus. E. Total megapixels, so long as it's equal to or greater than 12.

Can any of you geniuses point me in the right direction?

You’re good for any shooting situation, with the ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* lens offering a huge 50x optical zoom range – corresponding to 24mm wide angle to 1200mmsuper telephoto (equivalent in 35mm format).Clear Image Zoom doubles maximum magnification to a breathtaking 100xi, bringing distant buildings, people and animals jaw-droppingly close.

Camera shake is the enemy of high-zoom shooting, as any pro knows. Optical SteadyShot cuts handheld wobbles for crisper stills, rapidly shifting a group of lens elements to correct for the slightest hand tremors. Intelligent Active Mode keeps Full HD videos equally sharp and blur-free with Sony’s proprietary frame analysis technology.

Enthusiasts will be impressed by the high-resolution back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor with 20.4 effective megapixels and speedy BIONZ X image processing engine. Even if you’re shooting handheld indoors or in low light, you’ll value crisp, low noise images and pristine Full HD video footage.

The easy to use Cyber-shot HX350 is loaded with serious shooting options. There’s a manual ring for smooth adjustment of zoom/focus, plus an easily-accessible mode dial and custom button for quick adjustment of favourite settings. And with full P/A/S/M controls, you’ve got all the exposure options you need to craft stunning pictures and Full HD videos. Movie-makers will also welcome the extra detail of a 24p shooting mode that gives footage that authentically cinematic look.

The choice is yours when it comes to framing shots with confidence. Look through the camera’s high-contrast electronic viewfinder – just like you’d expect on a DSLR – or switch to the manually tiltable 7.5cm (3.0-type) LCD with 921k dot resolution.

Extra shooting refinements include Motion Shot Video that traces your tennis serve or golf swing as a split-second series of superimposed images. After shooting, connect the camera to your 4K television for a big, beautiful view of your photos. Support for TRILUMINOS™ Colour on compatible BRAVIA™ TVs ensures still shots bursting with vivid, vibrant colours.

Many modern camcorders are better :-)
Including Panasonic ones.
But I suggest you to try this one.
It is bigger, quality of manufacturing is better comparing to any modern camcorder.
3xCCD camcorder, so some advantages are also present.
Has good mikes, mic input, manual settings (shutter, etc).
Bitrate is low, really.

EKEN H8 PRO/PLUS/H8s - True 4K Actioncam for 120$ http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16535/eken-h8-proplush8s-true-4k-actioncam-for-120 Fri, 03 Mar 2017 04:29:06 +0000 fatpig 16535@/talks/discussions This cam is pretty cool. IMX 117 Sony sensor (used on GoPro 3) and true 4k30p , as well as a load of other good framerates. It supposedly has the same shape as the gopro and is therefore compatible with all accessories. But it comes with every accessory you could imagine already included ( 20 pieces or so) Here is a comparison of the different models: http://elproducente.com/eken-h9-h8-h8-pro-h8-plus/

And here is a test vs The Xiaomi Yi 2:

I ordered my H8 Plus (with 720p240 and 1080p60 stabilized) for 119$ on banggood. There is a "ProTune" mod in the works here: https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/eken-h8-pro-finally-real-4k.21605/page-2

Adding a 36$ 90°FOV lens, and some higher bitrates, this thing is a brilliant bang for the buck! Anyone have any experience with it?

Lytro Illum, 1" sensor, 30mm-250mm F2.0 zoom http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10221/lytro-illum-1-sensor-30mm-250mm-f2.0-zoom Tue, 22 Apr 2014 06:58:03 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10221@/talks/discussions image

Mountain View, Calif. – (April 22, 2014) – Lytro, Inc. revealed today its powerful vision for the future of photography with the unveiling of LYTRO ILLUM, a light field camera and software platform designed to redefine the way we portray the world around us. Built to harness the full power of the light field, the professional-grade LYTRO ILLUM will give photographers a new medium capable of capturing visual experiences in their purest form — not as a static cross-section of reality but an authentic, interactive window into their world.

The camera paves the way for an immersive brand of storytelling in which images can be brought to life in multiple dimensions through Light Field Photography — a transformative new category that empowers artistic creation and expression beyond what is possible in the 2D world of digital and film. In capturing the color, intensity and direction of every light ray flowing into the camera, LYTRO ILLUM provides a massive amount of visual information that allows photographers to recreate sights and scenes on a truly experiential canvas.

"With LYTRO ILLUM, creative pioneers — ranging from artistic amateurs to experienced professionals — will tap into a new wave of graphical storytelling. Now artist and audience alike can share an equally intimate connection with the imagery, and, in a sense, jointly participate in the magic of its creation," said Lytro CEO Jason Rosenthal. "By combining a novel hardware array with tremendous computational horsepower, this camera opens up unprecedented possibilities to push the boundaries of creativity beyond the limits inherent in digital or film photography."

To enable such rich, layered compositions, LYTRO ILLUM delivers unparalleled optical versatility by merging custom-built hardware with a powerful software platform. The camera offers a 40-megaray light field sensor, 8x optical zoom range, constant f/2.0 aperture and a high-speed shutter capable of freezing motion under a wide variety of conditions. After image capture, the innovative software platform empowers photographers to adjust aspects of images that were previously fixed, such as focus, tilt, perspective shift and depth of field, which allows the photographer to create images that will resonate for the viewer not just in one dimension, but in every dimension.

"My photography style pushes me to look for ways to tell a more compelling story with every image. LYTRO ILLUM gave me that ability by incorporating an interactive element that captures different visual touch points at every depth," said Kyle Thompson, a Chicago-based photographer known for his surreal conceptual style and one of the early users of the camera. "With LYTRO ILLUM, I've been able to make a multi-dimensional image with more perspectives to explore."

LYTRO ILLUM's totally unique photographic experience reflects the technological revolution around virtual reality and 3D graphics as powerful new storytelling formats in the Digital Age. In the hands of creative pioneers, the camera is a catalyst for a transformational shift in which the world will increasingly look for opportunities to craft a more immersive artistic experience.

"Light Field Photography is following the classic pattern for a transformational concept," said Lytro founder Dr. Ren Ng. "The original Lytro camera, which launched in 2012, introduced an entirely new era in photography. LYTRO ILLUM will advance this movement to a new level. We are very excited by the potential of this camera to ignite a photography revolution on the magnitude of the transformation from film to digital."

In addition to enabling post-capture image adjustments, LYTRO ILLUM's proprietary software platform enables users to view images in 3D, build custom animations, export images into common formats like JPEG and share to the Web or mobile devices. LYTRO ILLUM's workflow is also compatible with existing photo-editing suites like Adobe's Photoshop and Lightroom software and Apple's Aperture software, allowing creative pioneers to use the tools they already know and love.

LYTRO ILLUM Availability

The LYTRO ILLUM camera will ship starting July 2014 for a retail price of $1,599.

As part of the launch, Lytro is offering a variety of exclusive opportunities to those who pre-order the camera before July 15. In addition to receiving a specially- engraved LYTRO ILLUM for a special introductory price of $1,499 and an extended two-year warranty, they'll be eligible to join an inner circle of Lytro users with insider access to product development insight and support. Even after the product ships, this nucleus of early adopters will continue to receive ground-floor insight and training from the Lytro team, with opportunities to contribute to exclusive developmental projects.

As part of their status as early adopters, individuals who pre-order will have the opportunity to submit their own photo series to earn a spot in the Ultimate Lytro Photo Experience — a once-in-a-lifetime trip to shoot alongside a prominent photographer on an all-expense paid photo shoot. The Lytro team and this pro photographer partner will be on hand to provide high-caliber, hands-on training and practice for getting the most out of LYTRO ILLUM. As the larger photography community gets acquainted with this new style of digital art, these early adopters will have an inside edge on techniques for producing cutting-edge Light Field Photography.
