GoPro Hero 7 topic Tue, 19 Jun 2018 12:46:32 -0600 EspenB 19918@/talks/discussions After the discovery that the Hero(2018) is hardware identical to the Hero5 it might not come as a suprise to learn that the Hero7 seems to feature the same hardware as the Hero6. Only packaging and firmware might differ this year!

The model number SPCH1 is exactly the same as the GoPro Hero6.

The new GoPro action camera does not get a new name. The recent inspections of the device show that GoPro sticks to the usual designation and chooses Hero7 Black. For example, the action camera was approved last month by the Canadian ISED under this name with the model number SPCH1. Presumably this was not desirable as this inspection was quickly removed from the database. The screenshot below, however, shows that the Hero7 Black is indeed inspected including the product name and the model number.

  • Sony IMX377 sensor (Hero7 Black has IMX277 with HDOL-HDR)
  • Ambarella H2 SOC
  • Lens 145 degree FOV
  • 4K/60

The only thing this adds compared to the Hero7 Black seems to be the front facing selfie screen.

While the Ambarella H2 SOC has 3D based image stabilization it's unlikely to compete fully with GoPro HyperSmooth.

GoPro Hero8 topic Thu, 09 May 2019 17:58:17 -0600 EspenB 22038@/talks/discussions GoPro has confirmed the lauch of four new cameras for Q4, 2019. Fusion2 and three iterations of the Hero8.

Usually there is a launch in september and availability in october.

Despite the fact that the Black is the best seller and the unit which generates most profit it seems that GoPro will continue with the WHITE, SILVER and BLACK editions.

There is currently no leaks on possible new or enhanced features. However, as the current Hero 5/6/7 form factor is three generations old, we will probably see a new form factor in the new Hero8 series of action cameras. It remains to see how this might affect the Karma Grip gimbal. Will it be redesigned for Hero8 or go out of production?

It also remains to be seen if GoPro will be stepping up to a new GP2 processor in the Hero8 Black edition.

Canon XA55, XA50 and XA40 4K UHD Camcorders Tue, 02 Apr 2019 10:05:05 -0600 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21833@/talks/discussions image

Canon expands popular XA-series with three new compact 4K UHD professional camcorders

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 02 April 2019 -- Canon Europe has today announced the latest additions to its professional XA-series with three new 4K UHD camcorders -- the XA55, XA50 and XA40 - which respond to the growing market requirement for 4K UHD production. The XA55 / XA50 is a 4K UHD camcorder with a 1.0-type sensor, Dual Pixel CMOS AF and 15x Optical zoom, with the XA55 model featuring 3G-SDI. The XA40 is an ultra-compact 4K UHD camcorder with 1/2.3-type sensor and 20x Optical zoom.

The XA55, XA50 and XA40 are equally suited to 4K UHD and HD production, with Over Sampling HD processing allowing users to benefit from advanced Full HD capture, while the camcorders also offer a host of versatile professional features. Competitively priced and light in weight, these new camcorders broaden the reach of the XA product family and will resonate with professional users for applications such as news gathering, corporate video and documentary production.

Feature-packed 4K UHD filming for camcorder users

Portable and highly compact, the XA55 / XA50 enhances the appeal of the XA range to camcorder users. It is the first model in the XA-series to include a 1.0-type CMOS sensor with fast and reliable Dual Pixel Autofocus technology. The camcorder also features genuine Canon 4K 15x Optical zoom lens, which in conjunction with Super UD elements (Ultra-Low Dispersion), delivers rich image expression with beautiful bokeh and wide focal length of 25.5mm to 382.5mm. Advanced Full HD Imaging is possible thanks to the inclusion of DIGIC DV6 image processor and Over Sampling HD processing, whilst powerful 5-axis image stabilisation helps prevent image distortion even in handheld shooting.

Fast and accurate autofocusing in approximately 80 percent (vertical and horizontal) of the image is possible with Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Face detection AF, Face priority AF, Face only AF and touch tracking operation enable seamless focus control for intuitive operation, whilst a Dual Pixel Focus Guide provides a graphical user interface to aid manual focusing. This innovative guide applies Dual Pixel CMOS AF phase-difference technology to assist in achieving the same highly accurate focus.

The XA55 / XA50 user can also benefit from multi-format recording - with support for XF-AVC and MP4 recording up to 4K UHD 25P to SD cards, Slow & Fast Motion recording with a maximum speed of 1200x in both 4K and Full HD, and Dual SD card slots that enable relay and back-up recording. The XA55 / XA50 offers low power consumption with its battery supporting more than two hours of continuous operation.

Professional-quality audio is possible with linear PCM 4-channel audio recording and two XLR terminals, while 3G-SDI terminals (XA55 only) provide output in Full HD of 4:2:2 10-bit signal.

Versatile and ultra-compact professional 4K UHD camcorder

Weighing approximately 730g (body only), the XA40 is one of the most portable and compact 4K UHD professional camcorders currently available. Users can work the way they want to, but always in the highest quality, with the combination of a 4K UHD 1/2.3-inch type CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV6 image processor delivering pristine 4K UHD images, and superior Full HD images assured with Over Sampling HD processing. There is support for recording in MP4 UHD 150Mbps at 25P and Full HD 35Mbps/17Mbps at 50P/25P, while continuous Slow and Fast motion recording is available in both UHD and Full HD with maximum speed of 1200x.

Freedom of expression is assured with access to a 20x Optical zoom with wide angle starting from 29.3mm. Maintaining consistent image quality is no problem with powerful 5-axis image stabilisation, whilst a 3D real-time lens group structure supports fast, quiet zoom operation in the same time to achieve responsive operation.

An Infrared Mode -- making production possible in conditions with little to no ambient light -- and a 3.0-inch LCD touchscreen for intuitive control are among the other headline attractions of this highly-specified camcorder. Other features include Dual SD card slots for backup and relay recording and support for linear PCM 4-channel audio, with built-in stereo mic and two XLR terminals included as standard.

As an entry-point to the world of 4K, the LEGRIA HF G50 is designed to capture and future-proof special moments in higher resolution -- boasting a 1/2.3-type sensor with manual control, coupled with premium optics and processing for superior image quality. The LEGRIA HF G60, with its 1.0-type sensor, provides advanced users with the ability to shoot vivid and stunning movies in 4K UHD. The latter -- supporting Canon-developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF -- is perfect for those looking to capture extra detail and dynamism. Both camcorders are integral to Canon's growing range of 4K products, paramount for the market as consumption and demand becomes increasingly mainstream.

Ricoh WG-6 Compact for Tough Life Thu, 21 Feb 2019 21:17:24 -0700 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21594@/talks/discussions image

Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting down to 20 meters, continuously for up to two hours

The WG-6's solid, airtight body is waterproof to a depth of 20 meters --- the deepest in the history of the WG series --- and for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX8 or JIS Class 8).  It is also shockproof against a fall from heights of up to 2.1 meters, dustproof (equivalent to IPX6 or JIS Class 6), cold-resistant to temperatures as low as 10°C, and crushproof against weights of up to 100kgf (kilogram force).** Its heavy-duty construction means that the WG-6 performs superbly in demanding outdoor conditions.

High-quality, high-resolution images

Combining a state-of-the-art back-illuminated CMOS image sensor (which excels in high sensitivity and low-noise characteristics to deliver high-speed readout of image data signals) with a high-performance imaging engine, the WG-6 delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with approximately 20.0 effective megapixels. It also provides advanced image processing functions, made possible by the latest superresolution technology, for sharp, clear, high-resolution images. It even provides such innovative features as Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically captures several images of the same nighttime scene and produces a single blur-free composite image from them.

4K-resolution movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies

The WG-6 provides 4K-resolution movie recording in the H.264 format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (3840 x 2160 pixels, 30 frame rate). In addition to the conventional Movie SR (Shake Reduction) mode,* it also features a new Movie SR+ mode, which generates a shake-reduction effect similar to the one created by a gimbal unit for high-quality movie shooting with more active, fast-action outdoor activities.

Five-times optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage

Thanks to its five-times optical zoom lens with an angle-of-view coverage from 5mm to 25mm (equivalent to approximately 28mm to 140mm in the 35mm format) and a minimum focusing distance of a mere one centimetre, the WG-6 covers a wide range of applications, from eye-catching close-ups to sweeping landscapes.

Its Intelligent Zoom function extends the zoom range by approximately 40.5 times without compromising image quality, while its Interval Shooting mode makes fixed-point photography simple and effortless.

Six multi-application Marco Lights to assist close-up shooting

Positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel, the WG-6's six LED Macro Lights let the user select a faster shutter speed to minimize camera shake and subject shake in macro and close-up photography. The discharge level can be increased to as much as ten times that of conventional units. It also allows selective lighting, allowing the user to activate only the horizontally or vertically aligned lights to illuminate the subject more three-dimensionally and emphasize the subject's delicate contours.

3.0-inch, wide-frame LCD monitor for wide-angle viewing

The WG-6 comes equipped with a large, high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD monitor with 3:2 proportions and approximately 1,040,000 dots. Its AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimizes annoying glare and reflections to deliver a sharp, clear on-screen image even in the bright sunshine often encountered in outdoor shooting. It also features an Outdoor View Setting, which allows for easy adjustment of monitor brightness according to changes in ambient lighting conditions, optimizing the visibility of the on-screen image.

Enhanced GPS functions for easier data recording

The WG-6 has a built-in GPS module, which automatically records position and travel log data onto captured images and adjusts the built-in clock to local time. This module can be activated with a single action, and can receive signals from Japan's quasi-zenith satellite system Michibiki and Russia's GLONASS (global navigation satellite system), in addition to U.S. GPS satellites. By linking it with the SBAS (satellite-based augmentation system), the user can even record more accurate position data at various locations and times. When shooting indoors, the GPS Lock function allows the user to record GPS data onto captured images by using previously acquired position data.

Other features

  • Two remote control receivers (one in front and another on the back) to widen signal coverage
  • Electronic Level to check the camera's horizontal/vertical inclination
  • 18 Scene modes to select the finishing touch best suited to the subject, including a new Depth-of-field Composite mode
  • 12 digital filters
  • User position on the mode dial to program and recall user-selected camera settings
  • DW-5 (optional) to broaden the angle-of-view coverage to approximately 22mm (in the 35mm format) at wide-angle end
  • Compatibility with FlashAir™ SD memory cards for wireless LAN communications
  • Three strap lug receptacles for versatile strap arrangements, such as vertical and two-point suspensions\

Optional Accessories

  • RICOH O-CC173 Protector Jacket This silicon protector jacket not only protects the camera from dirt and scratches, but also improves grip on the camera when it is being held.
  • RICOH SC-900 Camera Case This holder-type camera case comes with a belt loop on the back, and allows for quick removal of the camera during snapshot photography.
