As the shots are bathing in sunlight with deep shadows under a tree, I need a camera with a high dynamic range (on the level of the BMPCC). Oh, and I don't have a Hollywood budget ;-)

1) What cameras can do both, fast fps and high DR?

2) Is there someone with such a camera in the Weilheim/Munich (Germany) area willing to help me out with his camera, lenses and technical knowledge (1-2 afternoons, arround sunset)?

I think one possible camera would be the Sony FS-700, but its expensive and even renting it is not cheap (as I have no experience with it, I will need additional time to learn its setups). Any thoughts on that one?

The GH4 can do 96fps, which is just enough (and I could use my m4/3 lenses) - but what about its DR?

Why don't we have a (near) perfect camera yet? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12349/why-dont-we-have-a-near-perfect-camera-yet Mon, 09 Feb 2015 05:12:02 +0000 TwitHerb 12349@/talks/discussions Everyone has an opinion as to what the perfect camera is. I'm curious as to which features we can agree upon that a (near) perfect camera would have. I say this because all the features I want already exist in other cameras.

My top three requirements for the near "perfect" camera.

  1. 10-12 bit. ITS 2015, why are we still buying 8bit cameras? If the GH4 has it, why can't everyone do it?

  2. 4K internal. Why the E-M5 II doesn't do 4K is baffling.

  3. IBIS / stabilization. If Oly can develop the best, why can't Sony, Sammy or Panny do the same?

I'd gladly pay $1K -$1.5K more for any mirrorless camera if they offered all three of these features. An E-M5 II that did 10bit 4K. An A7s that did 10bit 4K internal with IBIS. A GH4 with IBIS and a little more dynamic range.

We're so close to having really awesome cameras with few compromises.

Panasonic LUMIX GH4 Duplicate File Names in Successive SD Cards http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10751/panasonic-lumix-gh4-duplicate-file-names-in-successive-sd-cards Tue, 08 Jul 2014 16:19:47 +0000 RobShaver 10751@/talks/discussions This is my first post here so let me know if I'm not doing it right.

Has anyone else noticed that the GH4 produces duplicate file names on some of the video segments in successive SD cards?

For example I often shoot events where I fill an SD card, stop the recording, swap to a new SD card, format it in the camera and then start recording again. (I'm recording in 4K cinemalike-D mode.)

For example here is a path to the contents of one SD card:
E:\media\2014-06-25 AAG\Day-1\Reel-1\DCIM\102_PANA
and here is the directory listing in that folder:
P1020168.MOV
P1020169.MOV
P1020170.MOV
P1020171.MOV
P1020172.MOV
P1020173.MOV
P1020174.MOV

The path to the contents of the next SD card:
E:\media\2014-06-25 AAG\Day-1\Reel-2\DCIM\102_PANA
and it's contents:
P1020174.MOV
P1020175.MOV
P1020176.MOV
P1020177.MOV
P1020178.MOV
P1020179.MOV
P1020180.MOV
P1020181.MOV

Notice that file P1020174.MOV is the last file in the first SD and the first file in the second SD. I really prefer unique file names without regard to what folder they are in.

Since Adobe Premier Pro CC does not, on import, combine the clip segments in to a single clip like it does for other cameras, I discovered this file duplication problem when building full clips manually and got the files confused.

Advise on a combi stills and video DSLR http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10314/advise-on-a-combi-stills-and-video-dslr Mon, 05 May 2014 10:16:52 +0000 harryharry 10314@/talks/discussions Today I use a D7000 for stills and a hacked GH2 for videos. I have a small range of lenses. (Panasonic 20mm and 14-140mm, Nikon 35mm F1.8, Nikon 50mm F1.8, Samyang 85mm F1.4(nikon), Nikon 18-70mm, Tokina 12-24 (nikon), Nikon 55-200, Nikon 180mm F2.8).

I am quite happy with both the D7000 for stills and the GH2 for video but I would like to have one DSLR that can do both stills and video very good. I mainly use the GH2 for run&gun with monopod. (The Manfrotto 500 series video monopod which I like well.)

I have read a lot about the GH4. My understanding is that it is very good for video and ok for stills. Since stills are just as important as video for me I do not know if I am going to be pleased with the stills quality.

Another option is to go for a Sony A7 series camera. The A7s looks very interesting but is going to be expensive. I would then also need a new standard zoom for fast autofocus.

The other option is to wait. I can live with the setup I have. I believe there are many companies that in near future will release a camera that does both stills and videos very well. (Etc rumors says there will be released a Nikon D9300 and maybe a Nikon D7300 end of this year. I do not know if we can expect better video recording.)

Any advise?

Sigma DP1x, DP2 and DP3 topic http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6449/sigma-dp1x-dp2-and-dp3-topic Wed, 20 Mar 2013 11:53:08 +0000 stoney 6449@/talks/discussions Last year Amazon was selling it at $250, and I gladly got one.

Latest firmware has Capture Priority Mode feature that processes images when the buffer is full. At max resolution, 3 photos fills up the buffer which kicks in processing that would take about 10~20 seconds. Yeap be patient like slow cooking.

Dynamic range kinda sucks. SOOC JPEG quality sucks. High ISO performance really sucks. Some claim that its native ISO is only 100, and all other ISO settings are artificially simulated from in-camera post-processing. That explains why ISO 100 looks better than ISO 50. Yes there is noise at ISO 200. Haha gotta love this crazy Foveon!!! Of course there is no face detection. CDAF but manually select only one of 9 point focusing points. What a PITA piece of crap. But I've grown to like it. Foveon sensor is known to give very accurate color information, and it's just amazing how well it captures accurate color in shadow, on water reflection, in bright sun, or whatever crazy condition. Yes I use only ISO 100.

LR4 supports RAW, but Sigma's SPP app is much better at processing RAW. SPP can raise the brightness and boost color very well and simulate standard/vivid/scenary/monochrome/original/etc picture mode. But that's where its usefulness ends. Export to Tiff format then let LR4 import it.

SPP 5.5 has a pretty cool feature. Monochrome option from white balance selection strips out color information and uses only luminance values to produce "pure" B&W photo. FYI CMOS sensor has bayer filter on top of it, applies demosaicing algorithms to interpolate a set of complete red, green, and blue values for each point, then B&W photo can be generated from the guesstimated color information. That is a guesstimate from a guesstimate. Since Foveon sensor has three vertically stacked photodiodes for red/blue/green that collect 3 different luma information for each point, this new feature gives excellent B&W by controlling three different luma value separately without getting color noise. Some call it a poorman's Leica M-Monochrom :)

Example http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/post/51037744

But it supports only SD1 and DP1/2/3 Merrill series. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for expanding SPP's Monochrome support for all other DP series.

About video performance, it sucks.

Why we will not get the perfect low budget DSLR or Mirrorless camera: http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6469/why-we-will-not-get-the-perfect-low-budget-dslr-or-mirrorless-camera Fri, 22 Mar 2013 05:32:31 +0000 apefos 6469@/talks/discussions Main and obvious reason is: manufacturers needs to protect the pro cameras sales.

Everybody knows Canon are full of moire and aliasing and they do not improve the sensor in cheap DLSR for many years. Also there is not earphone output. Do you want a good sensor ? It exists, you just need more money to get it: 5D Mark III. A little more dynamic range and resolution? OK, C100, C300, C500. The price range of these cameras just says the obvious: do you want pro quality? So pay more, much more!

Sony do not give us mic input in cheap NEX cameras, also they are full of aliasing and low light is noisy with a maximum iso 3200. Do you want pro quality? OK, it exists: FS100, just pay more, much more and get the great low light performance and aliasing free.

Panasonic is giving us more, but dynamic range is poor even in GH3, sensor decreased in size, full of noise in low light. Why don't they just decrease the pixel count in the sensor to reduce noise? Because it is a photo camera which needs more megapixels and to keep a division in the market between consumer, prosumer and pro.

Nikon is getting into the game with the D5200, but there is the horizontal noise pattern...

What about the BMCC? Well, the camera itself is not cheap. SSD storage to shoot raw video is expensive. ProRes does not have the same DR. The camera needs rig to handle. Low light performance is poor. Not so portable solution.

So it is smart idea to stop dreaming about perfect low budget cameras. Want or need more? Simple: pay more!

Or use the solutions to improve the low budget cameras: VK hack, magic lantern firmware, neatvideo noise reduction, vaf antialiasing/moire filter, external sound recorder or juicelink preamp in camera, custom picture profiles/styles to increase DR, better lighting, careful grading in post, film grain simulation, sharpening, stabilizing, and of course good script and direction together with tripods, sliders, stabilizers, steadicams, and so on...

Using low budget cameras is "extract milk from the rocks". But remember it was worse in the era of VHS, SVHS, Hi8, miniDV and also HDV with 35mm adapter.

There is a new feature to come, the HDR/WDR/EDR video, already available in Red cameras. But will it be implemented in low budget cameras? And if it get implemented, will it be completely useful or with limitations like the magic lantern firmware approach? So keep dreaming about perfect low budget cameras is not good idea. Deal with the limitations or pay more.

I'm in the process of moving to Nikon full frame but I believe their 50p is worse. I need a wide lens, (so I'm stuck with f4 on the gh2, 12mm isn't wide enough) things will be more interesting when the speed booster comes out. Is their anything else out there that shoots nice 50p? Recommend Me a Camera http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5609/recommend-me-a-camera Sat, 29 Dec 2012 13:38:08 +0000 Alex2Fischer 5609@/talks/discussions I'm obviously considering the GH2, because of the amazing detail. Is it worth waiting for new cameras at CES and CP+? Or maybe there are some other recent cameras which might be the GH2 Killer... OM-D E-M5 anyone?

Suggestions for Best Camera + Lens for ~$1K http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5521/suggestions-for-best-camera-lens-for-1k Tue, 18 Dec 2012 16:42:44 +0000 jsteg094 5521@/talks/discussions Hello,

I've spent weeks researching, and I've decided to turn to some aficionados.

First up, Camera: I've found that the GH2 is the best price/performance camera. Is this still true today, or are there better ones, such as the Olympus E-M5? Or, would it be best to wait -- do you think there will be anything extraordinary worth waiting for in the first few months of 2013?

Lastly, Lens: I've seen some people use old TV SD 2/3" Lenses, like B4 and C-Mount, etc. Are these worth it? I've heard that (for the most part), the IQ isn't very good, and there's a large amount of work (modifications) to get them to work.

Should I instead be looking at native lenses, like the Leica 25mm? Lots of people talk about anamorphic lenses, and the Voigtlander f/0.95. It seems like almost everyone raves about the Voigtlander, and while it seems expensive, is it truly worth it (price/performance) over say the Panny 20mm or even the Leica 25mm?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope this topic helps others as well! -Josh

This guy took the popular Raspberry Pi (tiny computer), and put it inside a battery grip, connecting it to his DSLR. Because it's a computer and connected via usb, he gets access to the memory storage and if the camera has it then also the shutter and control/interval shots.

My primary occupation is a director/editor at a news tv station in Malta,Europe but I started venturing in documentaries and productions as a side job for more than a year, at first I was eying the GH2. The footage I saw amazed me, but than moved to canon , for more practical options basically, I can't rely solely on hacked hardware. At first I was going to get a 600d but ended up getting a 60d, now I need another camera the third camera and was very interested in getting the 5D Mark II , but then the Mark III emerged!

The many blogs I've been following, practically I browse trough all! Are saying something about the sharpness on the latest 5D, I wish to ask what does this mean is the footage to soft? , lacking detail or it's just a question of lack of detail in a pixel contest, by that I Mean it's at magnification that one can notice this lack of sharpness or it's all over the image!

Also any idea about what starter lenses should I consider, what about primes does old glass resolve in better quality, or stick to modern primes, also what's a good starter light kit for a starter budget.

Maybe if you get chance, I get some feedback
