Is it not possible to change the firmware in the GH3 to improve the GH2?

If what you say is the best current hack and why? because I feel that every hack is good for a particular situation.

In fact I have a little trouble to navigate through it all.

I make short comedy sketches for youtube and have experimented with a few hacks. I'm looking for one that doesn't take an absurd amount of data, is flexible, but also increases the quality decently well.

I'll mostly be shooting in my basement with some lighting, but will shoot outside a bit as well.

Any other suggestions much welcomed!

1. I put everything in the same "hack" folder. Including the setd.ini file for "moon t5" hack
2. I opened ptools
3. loaded firmware that i got from Panasonic website
4. click green letter (i think it was "D")
5. save as "GH2__V12" (old firmware was called GH2__V11)
6. Put knew firmware in sd card
7. load in fully charged camera
8. hit play and it updated to the new one.... and that's it.

But the file size still seems small to me even though my time got shorter. I'm using 16gb 95mb/s SD extreme Pro card. Which gave a 13 minutes and 48 seconds recording time when camera is set to 24P CINEMA (24H).

a 10 second clip came out to 52mb in size. Then i imported the MTS file into Premiere CS5 and looked up the properties of the native clip and this is what i got:

I don't know what else to do. I know nothing about this but i'm trying to learn. It's hard when i don't have a PC and i'm always working (wine doesn't work on my mac). I've attached another link to download a 10 second MTS file. I hope I gave you guys enough info to help me out.

Not sure if there is an advantage filming MJPEG rather than AVCHD...both look really good.

Would a bit rate hack help solve this problem? Is this an encoding problem? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

QUESTION 1: How do I get a lower bitrate with the hack and patches?

QUESTION 2: Can I re-set the camera to standard firmware and can I set it so I can switch back and forth between the hack and standard?

What is the best way of knowing which mode corresponds to each in-camera setting? ie. When I select Manual Movie Mode, HBR, Cinema, or variable, what am I actually getting? Is there a list of where and how I can get each of the settings? Or should I shoot a sample in each, and use media-info to figure that out?

OK, so I've shot a bunch of footage now and need to put it all together. I'm doing the "behind the scenes" video for my partner's forthcoming album. I'll need to send a master to the record company for them to include on the DVD.

I've shot everything in Sanity 5.1 HBR (PAL), which has been super dependable. (Didn't use 24p because of the motion judder.) My worst beginner mistake is that some of my footage is pretty underexposed and will need to be lifted quite a bit. Color profile was smooth -2 all the way.

I can edit the MTS files natively in Vegas Pro 12 and it's plenty fast. But I'd like to do the color correction, titles, etc in AE so I can use ColorGhears (which I am loving!). That's where the confusion starts.

No matter if I open an MTS file directly in AE or export an AAF from Vegas to open in AE, the MTS files are unbearably slow to work with in AE. So my first question is if I should transcode my footage in Vegas before I send it to AE. And if so, what would be the optimal settings? I have the DNxHD codecs installed, and have downloaded 5DtoRGB as well, but am not sure about settings.

System: Windows 7 PC with 32GB 1600mhz RAM, GTX570 graphics card, Intel Core i7 processor, media files on external Raid 10 setup. My Adobe suite is from the Creative Cloud, so I have access to Premiere but don't really have time to learn a new NLE.

What I'd like to do is make my edit in Vegas, and then use AE for my grading/titles/effects etc. I'm super confused about the simplest way to set up my workflow, and about how to set up my project files in Vegas and AE for optimal results.

If anyone out there has any advice, I'd be really grateful! Anyone who helps out will have my undying gratitude (and a thanks in the CD booklet if desired!). And if my questions are too newbish, feel free to get in touch backchannel.

SPANNING is absolutely needed, as I often shoot longer then 1hr.

I would really like the hack to have matching bit rates so- 24H/L 72mbps/50mbps, 30H/L 72mbps/50mbps, and whatever works for 1080i and 720p.

I've heard of GH3onaGH2, but I can't seem to find that hack setting anywhere. Is it called something different now?

Any advice would be great!

New to the GH2 Hacking world. Recently purchased a GH2 with the 14-140mm kit & 20mm pancake lens. I did my research on the subject and I am not looking to get spoon fed. Just want some insight, as the hacking hobby can get quite overwhelming for beginners such as myself. I will try to explain my needs to the best of my knowledge.

I am looking for a hack that will bring my GH2 some glory for outdoor filming of mainly car meets and events. As I understand certain hacks shine best in specific scenarios, and I will attempt to describe my need. I will be flying the camera using a Glidecam stabilizer. Most of the footage will be done with the 14-140mm kit lens. Exposure will be good, cars will be static objects with several scenes capturing cars driving in/out of the event area. (you get the idea). I would also love to capture some footage of cars on the track (this adds a fast-motion requirement as well - but I am okay with two separate hacks to best suit the composition). I am not looking for spanning footage, a maximum of 25 seconds per take.

I would certainly love to try some Driftwood patches out, but since there are so many I am kindly asking for some advice in the right direction. Would the all Intra low GOP settings be suitable? I am looking to shoot in 24p 1080. Please share your thoughts,

or do I need to check a box in ptools to enable it? (the same way I check a box for the iso 12800?)

I did some research but I just do not find and do not know how to enable spanning when recording with GH2 hacked firmware, advices welcome!

I would like to know a few things : - Which is the smoothest hack on the GH2 ? (All the detail, no macro-blocking) - What does "Intra" or "AVC-Intraa" mean ? - What is Auto Quantitizer ? I'm not sure if a higher number means a better image (lower compression) or it's the inverse. What is better, AQ0 (all to motion), or AQ4 (all to details) ? - What does GOP stand for, and there is "Low-GOP", but then does that mean there's "high GOP" ? What are 12/15 GOP, 3 GOP and 6 GOP ? - What are P-frames, B-frames... ? - What is "Matrix" and "444 Matrix" ? - On some settings there's written "14-16 QP", or "QP16". What does QP mean ?

I've not seen much smooth looking GH2 videos on Youtube (unlike the canon videos), lots of them have a lot of macroblocking or whatever and causes the video not to be smooth, and sometimes there are some sort artifacts (I think it's because of the compression or something...). I'm a bit of a pixel-peeper :P Could someone explain me the causes of the un-smoothness, and why are some videos really clean compared to others ?

I own the GH2 with the 14-140mm Lumix lens, and I just started making films. I really like the 14-140mm, it has a very fast autofocus (for filming skateboard or whatever...), and when zoomed in it has a very nice DOF. But the problem is, it is way too sharp (even with sharpness at -2 and the Apocalypse Now DrewNet 'Soft' hack 444 matrix). I bought the GH2 thinking that it would have the same "Smooth" effect as the Canon T2i, 7D, 5D but with more resolution... because the GH2 IS a DLSR (or should I say DSLM). I know I could have this effect if I use non-panasonic or vintage lenses, but right know I own only the Lumix 14-140, and I'm not buying new lenses right now (or anamorphic adapters). The videos with those kit lens looks too much like a cheep Hi-rez camcorder and not like a DSLR or Cinematic or RED video... I know, I know, I should use a short DOF, reduce everything to -2... bla bla bla... But the 14-140 is still too sharp. It maybe even look a tad better on the GH1...

Now is there any type of HACK made especially for that type of lens, or any HACK that really softens the image down (canon-like) without a big loss of quality ?

I've already tried "soft" hacks (apocalypse now...etc), but it doesn't change anything, the edges are still too rough and sharp.

I've just hacked my GH2 with the Apocalypse Now patch (the smooth one if I recall correctly) and it's absolutely fantastic. I'm an amateur and I'm still learning everything, but the colours and details are great. I've found that the High Bit Rate setting is better than the 24P but with both I have some major issues with what I think is moiring. It's objects mainly with straight edges such as books, or repetitive patterns such as pillows that seem to kind of pulse and flicker.

I've read a fair bit around the site to try and adjust the settings to smooth and reduce things by -2 etc, but I'm finding that it just can't handle these kinds of images without pulsing.

Is there any work arounds or things that I'm missing as an amateur, and if not, are there alternative patches that have tackled these kinds of problems whilst retaining the brilliant quality?
