I'd like to direct your attention to a very interesting manifesto written in Cuba in 1969: For an imperfect cinema by Julio García Espinosa.

I feel it is incredibly relevant for the filmmakers of today because it discusses issues such as the possibility for everyone to be filmmakers with cheaper technology (and the problems with that), as well as dangers of adapting to either Hollywood or the snobbery of the European intelligentsia.

I wrote some more detailed account of my own thoughts on it here: “Art will not disappear into nothingness; it will disappear into everything”.

Rejouer was touted as being the first full-length feature film shot entirely on a GH1. I think the production took place in 2009 and the movie was supposed to be released in 2011.

The promo trailer and some behind the scenes footage looked promising.

Anyone know what happened to it?

Showreel 2: Skin tones

The next showreel is all about 'Skin tones'. One of the hardest things to get right is the tone colour of skin within the use of available lighting. Often it can have an unnatural look, harsh, over-saturated, orange and just well, wrong. So we are looking at techniques pre-post to get the most accurate looking skin tones matching to the original ethnicity of the skin - to reproduce what we see with our eyes. So this brings into question lighting and camera settings to achieve a look that is both convincing and easiest to grade in post.

Any personal-view members who would like to participate please say 'Aye' below. We require just 5 seconds (FIVE SECONDS) shot on the GH2 using ANY patch (including stock firmware if you like) to show off the merits of the GH2 and it's film modes using 1080p24, 720p, 1080i, MJPEG HD/VGA - it would be interesting to see a variety of different lenses being utilised. Shoot anytime of day / night.

What you will supply:
You need only upload an original mts file (short recordings only folks detailing the 5 seconds IN/OUT points) nothing else.
A summary of the hack/no hack, patch, film mode, lens, lens setting (aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc...) and a info note about the sort of lighting employed, and anything interesting you find about lens or camera settings.

People willing to participate should have dropbox or a similar upload site where we can pull down the original mts file from and of course communicate through this thread.
Updated Closing date: 5th January 2012.

Kaydara, film and making of, interesting tips for the no budget films

Kaydara is a fanfilm inside the matrix universe, made mostly by two french directors, what was supposed to be a two month shortfilm end up in six years of work for a film of an entire hour, good special fx, with no budget at all but tons of hard work, interesting tips in the two hour making of for those shooting guerrila DIY style.

Low / No Budget Set Design : High Production Values for Low $

To me, the biggest thing that really calls attention to a low / no budget short is bad sets, backgrounds, lighting, etc... You can fix lighting up to a point with little money, but set design is one of the biggest things that's never talked about that can have a huge impact on your look of your film or short.

And it can be one of the most costly. Part of the reason a lot of these shorts have bad sets is because they have no money to try and make things look better and/or no crew to try and make it look good. So they shoot where they can shoot free and in locations they can't change or don't have time to change.

So I'd like to start this topic to brainstorm ideas and find links online of set designing and trying to get more "production value" in your films with little to no money. I found this link: http://smashortrashindiefilmmaking.com/?page_id=1104

This is both a good example of low budget set design AND special effects since this is a forced perspective shot. Anybody else have links or tips on this topic?

He also has the highest spec sale ever in Hollywood: Deja Vu sold for 5 million dollars. You don't need books written by hacks, or seminars, F Syd Field, it's all here on this site. They have a great forum too, but it's closed on weekends.
