Shorts Shot on Film! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10330/shorts-shot-on-film Wed, 07 May 2014 08:37:39 +0000 jpbturbo 10330@/talks/discussions ITT, Shorts that are shot on film.

This thread is to remind people what film actually looks like. Funky homebrewed filters that apply arbitrary color curves to your digital footage is not a real film look. Applying too much grain, scratches, and light leaks is not a film look. I have never shot moving images on film but I've shot my share of stills on a Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic that my mom bought back in the late 1960's and the instagram style colour filters that are touted as a film look for stills and video drive me insane.

Feel free to share your own shorts or music videos that are shot on film. 35, 16, 8mm, and even Imax is welcome here. To keep it easy to navigate and discuss lets keep it to one video per post.

Here's the first, Shot on Kodak 35mm with ARRI cameras.

UPTODATE Best Independent film festivals across the UK / Europe / World - Please Add Here http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8489/uptodate-best-independent-film-festivals-across-the-uk-europe-world-please-add-here Sun, 20 Oct 2013 06:06:15 +0000 driftwood 8489@/talks/discussions I am compiling a list of the best annual independent film festivals around UK predominantly, Europe / worldwide would also be good to have. I think it could be a useful worldwide maintained guide to festivals here too for p-v members. I am not particularly interested in the obvious 'biggies' like Sundance etc because they are well covered.

For example, we have 'Cine City' here in Brighton, UK, which starts this November, showcasing up and coming film talent, artists moving image, exhibitions, etc.

So I would like to try and keep a maintained guide here on personal-view for us all to use. Many festival list sites are out of date, so ensure your festival details are correct. Please help by adding your town's festival below.

Please submit below the festival name, website link, submissions info, dates, etc. as my example;-

Philomena' the movie, DP'd by Robbie Ryan= Beautifully shot! http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10004/philomena-the-movie-dpd-by-robbie-ryan-beautifully-shot Sun, 30 Mar 2014 11:11:42 +0000 maranfilms 10004@/talks/discussions Went yesterday to watch this film, I loved the cinematography. I only wish more movies were shot this way. There was no CGI, or ridiculous un-motivated shots to stimulate the dumbed down unappreciative masses. Nope, just good old cinema at it's best, where shot composition, natural lighting, and film stock are used as a tool to tell the story and create a feel unmatched by silly computer generated effects, even though the majority of the film was shot on the Arri Alexa. However, when the s16 made it's appearance, it worked wonderfully well to convey time change and a feeling of saddened loneliness. The acting was also fantastically convincing, there's no silicone injected duck lip plastic people with bleached white Chiclet teeth and a side of Botox, really, It didn't need the Hollywood glamour and all the façade that goes with. The acting, cinematography and script was more than adequate to tell this story. My only critique was the scoring, don't get me wrong, it's not that it was bad, I just feel it didn't convey as much emotion as it could have, of course it's subjective and being that I'm life long musician, I tend to be somewhat critical. Others may disagree. In closing, If you want to kill a couple hrs. and gorge yourself with some cinematic eye candy, it's well worth the price of admission and a box of popcorn.

Budget/equipment vs knack/eye http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9566/budgetequipment-vs-knackeye Fri, 07 Feb 2014 17:28:57 +0000 Riker 9566@/talks/discussions I don't know how many of you saw the movie Pusher. I just did, even though it's an old one, from 1996. It was directed and written by color-blind director 26 year old Nicolas Winding Refn. I can't say how blown away I was yesterday after watching it. There are 2 more movies in the Pusher trilogy, second one being ok and third one being very good. First one is excellent tho.

Apparently the movie reached cult status, so much so that it received a typical modern aspiring filmmaker treatment - remake.

The remake basically copies the original movie scene by scene. For someone like me who just saw the original, watching the remake was a painful experience, since I just watched the original and remember every scene. The original has tremendous pace, rhythm, and it's gripping, can't think of more appropriate word than that. On the other hand, the same exact scenes and basically identical lines of dialogue in 2012 remake are just mind-numbing. The 2012 version is obviously budgeted. Cameras are better. Colors nice and vivid. The original was shot in chronological order entirely using hand-held cameras. The remake had jib shots and slides.

The original had significant amount of grain, noise, blown high-lights, heavily underexposed shots, over-saturated shots, they even broke the 180 rule at one point. The remake was done "by the books".

Yet the remake sucks all balls possible while the original is one of the best movies I saw in a long time, despite being "old". I didn't see it before so it's new to me :)

So with that in mind, and with all GH4 drama going around the internet, I find myself thinking......how big of a budget does it take to compensate for dullness or general boring style of storytelling?

How to :Shoot, Print, And Frame A Massive Peter Lik Style Photograph On A Budget http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2442/how-to-shoot-print-and-frame-a-massive-peter-lik-style-photograph-on-a-budget Wed, 29 Feb 2012 14:01:59 +0000 simple 2442@/talks/discussions Aye thought i would share this i just found, looks awesome and like a for project for a gift, of home-style art for friends.

Text taken from Fstoppers great site to follow, got a lot of good info : http://fstoppers.com

.

If you have seen Peter Lik’s work in person then you understand that it’s impossible to put into words the look and quality of his prints. Peter’s photography (and his post production) is fantastic, but what really makes his work stand out is his printing and presentation. If his images were printed on standard photo paper at a standard size, his work would not have the same “wow” factor. Right before a trip to Italy I went back into Peter’s studio for a little inspiration. After studying his work and speaking with a sales rep about his printing process I decided to shoot, print, and frame a shot in Italy for the absolute cheapest price without losing the “wow” factor that Peter’s work has. This is how I did it.

Today it is so easy to stitch images together that you could shoot a picture like this with practically any camera with manual control and the more images you take, the more megapixels the final prodcut will be. Don’t think that you have to have some ultra expensive camera to get quality images. I went to Italy with only 1 camera (D7000) and 1 lens (Sigma 17-50mm). If I had brought a longer lens I could have zoomed in more and taken even more pictures for a higher megapixel image but I was so far away (and I could only zoom to 50mm) so only 3 images fit. 3, 16mp images combined into one made for one ultra sharp image though.

The metallic print from BayPhoto.com really did look like it was printed on metal and it definitely has that “backlit” look that people say Lik’s work has. The print in the video can not come close to the way that it actually looks in person. As I said at the end of the video, this paper looks fantastic but it is so reflective it has to be perfectly flat to look it’s best. I would highly suggest bringing your print to a professional, getting them to mount it on gatorboard and then using the mirror for something else (it actually is a really nice mirror). I hope you guys enjoyed this video. It is very different than our other stuff but we thought we would give it a try. We are really ramping up our video production and in the near future we hope to bring you an original video each week. .

Paper to look for at your local photo developer is to get the look is :

.

Kodak Metallic paper or Fuji Pearl

.

Post comments on what you think, and if you have done this, your experiences good or bad : ^^

What do you film? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5507/what-do-you-film Mon, 17 Dec 2012 12:04:12 +0000 JustinBiber 5507@/talks/discussions I couldn't find a general filmmaking category , so I suppose I am right here in the Category art. While stumpling through the forum, with the aim to require knowledge for DSLR-Filmung/GH2-usage and Costum Firmware Patches, I have seen some good, detailed, lovely and professionel footage, while there was also lots of crap. People filming flowers in the garden with shaky hands, empty roads/bridges ships. I was feeling scared, like when I see amazon reviews of people shooting insects in their garden with expensive cameras. I don't want to imply anything or make it bad. But it's in my opinion sad. I have shooten one musicvideo(unedited^^), a short film(unedited^^), another film (finished but needs recut, now that I know more) a few concerts and I made one trailer. A lot more movies I would have shooten, if I had the right team. I almost had it once, but then it broke up because of two important members moved to another city (job). The other ones left weren't all motivated enough or reliable so I stopped the project. It would have been a waste of energy going on. Ideas and equipment is there. What's lacking is not money. It's finding the right people. To rely completely on my self I shot videos on my own, Concerts etc., things one person can handle. I wish I could make movies with other dedicated people. Meanwhile my Cam is rotting in the cupboard. How do/did you find your team or how do you handle this huge problem? Have a nice day, Cheers Justin

And back to my main question:

What do you film?

Zachary Copfer self-coined the above photo as bacteriography. By growing genetically altered bacteria in a petri dish as his photographic film and then exposing parts to UV radiation as his light. Through this method he can literally grow the photograph. Copfer then refrigerates the bacteriograph, uses another blast of radiation treatment to kill any microbes, and then seals it with a layer of acrylic to fix and preserve the image.
