When I was watching The Substance, sometimes through my fingers when something gross was happening; the whole time, I kept thinking, "How did they do this?" Well, I have been waiting since before the Oscar run to get a VFX breakdown on what I consider to be one of the best and most inventive movies from last year. Now, it's finally here. The French company la Compagnie Générale des Effets Visuels put a breakdown on YouTube that I think is really special and shows how they did those killer effects. Let's dive in. The Substance -- VFX Breakdown What is cool about the movies is that it doesn't matter what country something was made in, great stories have no borders. Now, let's go over a little bit of what we see in the video. The Eye: It kicks off with a striking close-up of an eye dramatically splitting in two, quickly followed by a look at the underlying 3D model. We can see how this effect was digitally built and then rendered in the movie. Wounds: Part of the main plot is climbing out of a massive body wound, to build it, we see the digital compositing and cleanup done to make it feel seamless.Building Environments: In order to change POVs in the movie and get a mirror shot, a classic blue screen setup is shown, Then, they add in a fully realized bathroom environment.
