What could stand on its own as an interesting narrative employing its anachronistic sci-fi premise and scathing corporate satire alone, Severance takes many steps further and explores topics of grief, love, and self-worth deeper than just about anything on TV. On top of that? it's very funny and beautiful to look at. In its season 2 finale, "Cold Harbor," Severance flexes all these muscles in a dense 76 minutes that never let up. Standing as Executive Producer and Director of 10 of Severance's 19 episodes, Ben Stiller entered Season 2 with creative ambitions to give each episode a distinct personality and sought to approach "Cold Harbor" as a standalone episode of sorts. Stiller elaborates in his finale retrospective with Indiewire: “That was fun to go off on location and do those things, but it’s also interesting when you watch the whole season because every episode kind of has its own personality,” Stiller said. “You’re kind of going, ‘OK, we’re going to try something else here that hopefully will live in the world of the show.’ But you’re definitely taking chances to be able to expand the lexicon of the show.”Season 2 did this in several instances with bottle episodes like the weekend retreat to snowy "Woe's Hollow" and the Gemma-focused, revelatory "Chikhai Bardo."
